Monnow bridge is the only remaining gated medieval bridge in the Uk, and is worthy of a visit. The approach to each side of the bridge is pedestrianised making it safe to wander and take pictures. The car park adjacent charges £1.50 for two hours. There are a good selection of cafes and bars, up the Main Street leading to the bridge, making it a lovely spot to spend some time

This fantastic looking bridge which spans the river Monnow in Monmouth is the only remaining fortified river bridge in the UK with it's beautiful gate tower. It's wonderful to walk over it and there are great views of the river below. It will only take a couple of minutes to walk back and forth along it but hopefully you'll be able to feel the history of the bridge and it's importance to the town of Monmouth.

Went to school in Monmouth in late 1950's and my bus crossed the bridge every day .
This bridge is the only remaining gated medieval bridge in the UK, and is considering its age in very good condition. Nice surrounding area with shops and cafes. Good unique photo opportunity.

The bridge and gate house at the bottom of the High Street crossing the slightly high River Monnow.
Some evidence of recent flooding in the area. Lovely looking gate house.
Ideal photo opportunities.
Or just watch the river flow auickly beneath the bridge.
Large pay car park next to it.
Plenty of places to eat and drink nearby.
Well worth a walk over.

This was cool but dangerous due to flooding. The tankers were by the side of the bridge pumping water out to lower the level. There was flooding all over the town and we had to be careful where we went due to roads being closed etc. Still a lovely historic building and well worth a look.

A beautiful bridge crossing the River Monmow...situated at the end of the busy high street and close to the park where a better photo will be taken.
The highlight of our brief visit to this sweet little town.

Built in the 12th century, this bridge is now the only remaining fortified gated bridge in Great Britain!
Now pedestrian foot traffic only,it guarded the town in medieval times from unwanted visitors as it was the only way over the River Monnow on this side of the town,it's tower is still complete.
A beautiful well preserved structure,it now hosts a weekly market around this end of Monnow Street(the main street)
A few hundred yards away is a much newer traffic bridge!

A very impressive 16th century gate and wall, still standing in Monmouth. Lots of interesting historical information to view! Apparently the oldest in the country, but which country, England or Wales is the question!

Hi swift-simba and anyone else who can help. Haven't visited the Monnow Bridge for years, Guess I'm going to need to use a carpark now as I can't drive over it any more. Any suggestions please? A post code would be most helpful!

The car park at the bottom of the town is right beside the bridge - look for Waitrose 👍
