Great castle with lots to see
Jun 2021
Large castle that runs high above the river. Lots to see and great views. The old gate is really impressive and the whole place is well managed. Steeped in history

Review of Castle only
Oct 2020 • Couples
This review is of the Castle only as at time of visiting the Military museum was closed due to good old Covid!
The picture shown IS the Castle, that’s it nothing more. This probably explains why it is free to visit. A couple of information boards prolong the visit to 10 minutes. I know it is no one’s fault but please don’t expect to see a proper Castle.

Great to stumble upon while in the town
Aug 2020 • Family
Great that it's so central to the town. However there wasn't much left of the castle left to look at. And unfortunately due to covid19 the museum was closed.

The castle and museum is just off the High Street in the centre of the town.
The military museum doesn't open until April so slightly disappointed to find it locked.
Even after April its only open afternoons.
A few military vehicles outside to look at.
The castle is next to the museum and is only a few walls left standing and some stones in the ground.
Small war memorial garden at the end.
Without the museum its a 15 minute visit.
Still possible to try and think of it years ago.
Nice quiet place to rest up.

Interesting and free to visit.
Dec 2019
Located on Castle Hill, close to the centre of Monmouth, both Monmouth Castle and the Monmouth Regimental Museum are free to visit. Little remains of the castle birth place of Henry V, but enough to be of interest (the curtain wall, gatehouse and great round keep) and, on the day we visited, was quite atmospheric with mist eerily rolling down the hills in the background. The military museum itself is a listed building on the Monmouth Heritage Trail. Open 2-5pm most days, this small volunteer-run museum has plenty of exhibits pertaining to the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, a regiment which has given continuous service to the crown since 1539.

Not much left of the castle
Oct 2019
There is very little left of the castle to see. However, the tiny little museum has an enormous amount of material for such a small place. If you have an hour or so then wander on in.
