We stumbled across Ancre Hills holiday cottage on Cottages 4 You. Comfortable, quality decoration and furnishings, great space for kids and a fair price. They even left us a delightful bottle of their own wine in the fridge - delicious. We had a fabulous few days over half term and intend to return to try more of the wine next time.

Richard and Joy made us feel so welcome at their organic and biodynamic vineyard. Richard personally gave us a tour of the vineyard and winery and his passion about what started out as a hobby was apparent. He patiently answered all of our questions and made the tour informative and fun. We then tasted five of Ancre Hill’s wines, which were delicious (especially the Blanc de Noirs and the Sparkling Rosé). The Welsh cheese platter was also excellent. I really enjoyed my visit to Ancre Hill and would highly recommend it for anyone who finds themselves in the Monmouth area.

So looking forward to tasting their 'orange wine' made from the albarino grape. We had their sparkling wine for our daughter's wedding in 2016 and it was beautiful.
Firstly, your website says the vineyard is open at the moment - it is closed until March next year so sourcing their products is difficult. Fortunately there is a really helpful outlet in Monmouth [Marches] who managed to procure a couple of bottles of the orange wine for me. Even they said it was difficult to get hold of the owners at this time of year. Husband and myself have just tasted the wine - in our opinion it is truly horrible. We drink a lot of wine and this was not palatable - we threw half of the bottle away [it is not cheap!]

We visited June 2016 on impulse on a sunny day. Arriving before lunchtime we went through the wine tasting which was informal and informative. I have a limited knowledge of wine, outside of how wine is produced in France. I know what I like and have usually veered toward New World wines.

We had the tour after lunch which was great, a family business with a sound ethical plan, long may they continue. We sat in the sunshine and ate lunch with wine after the tasting session with locally sourced and made produce. We now regularly buy a local cheese, Black Bomber cheddar (sold in Waitrose) I am not local so I am pleased it is stocked nationwide having found it by chance.

We bought wine direct from the vineyard, Cellar Door and I have struggled since with stockists to get all that I want from one supplier and with postage it seems easier to wait until they are open again in early summer.

We will definitely return as the vineyard is such a lovely environment where we can buy great wine and stop for lunch.

Probably best to go on a sunny day to get the best of the tour of the vines and to enjoy the views in this section of the Monnow Valley. The new winery is very impressive and is possibly the largest straw bale building in the world, although they may have a bigger one in Dubai. The owner, Richard, is very knowledgable and enthusiastic and the wines are delicious. The cheese selection is pretty good as well.

We had astounded some Italian friends by taking them a bottle of an Ancre Hill fizzy which had come top in an international competition in Italy and, when the opportunity presented itself, we made a trip to this lovely part of Monmouthshire to take a tour round the vineyard and a wine tasting session.
What an interesting visit this was! Richard and his wife are so knowledgeable about wine in general and their wines in particular. Their care and attention to detail shows in the meticulously tidy vineyard and production area. It is worth a visit just to see the eco-friendly production area alone as it is constructed from straw bales covered with a lime plaster and the insulating properties of the walls give the very stable temperature needed for the production of fine wine. There are also some wonders of modern hi-tech machinery there as well which will not fail to impress people of that bent.
Best of all was the wine-tasting where the freshness and joie de vivre is in every glass!

My parents bought me the adopt a vine package for christmas which me and my wife used today. We had a fascinating time learning a small fraction i guess of how the wonderful wines here are produced. Fantastic experience and we enjoyed a lovely cheese platter to finish. Great time and thanks to our lovely welcoming down to earth hosts Richard and Joy. Brilliant to think such wonderful wine is made on our doorstep in Wales!

The vineyard tour is very informative and interesting, whilst the cheeses with wine platter is a lovely way to while away some time taking in the gorgeous view of the vineyard and surrounding area. Joy and Richard are very knowledgeable and engaging and it has to be said that the wines definitely deserve the awards they have won.
