We made a special trip to see the Nelson Garden on 18 September only being in the area for a few days and were pleased it was open over the weekend. We arrived and the gate was locked, there was a notice on the door saying that if we waited someone would come. Nobody came and after 15 minutes we left. We do appreciate that volunteers run the garden but it would save disappointment if they shortened the hours of visiting if the garden cannot be open so that the likes of us would not be disappointed.

We found this garden quite by chance, directed from a hand-drawn map on a notice board by a bus stop. Its opening hours are quite restricted: Thurs to Sat, 10am-4pm, April to November only, and entrance is from a narrow footpath that leads from the north end of Blestium Street, through a gate way in a high stone wall and up a flight of steps (apparently there is disabled access by arrangement via a different entrance). Once inside, we found a lovely oasis of sunlight and tranquility: a grassy lawn with trees and flowerbeds around, a raised walkway overlooking the playing fields outside the garden, and of course the little pavilion commemorating Lord Nelson's visit in 1802, which gave the garden its name. The garden is beautifully kept, a perfect place for tired travellers or shoppers to sit and rest, and relax from the troubles of the day!
