The Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the only Museum of its kind in the United Sates. The Museum grounds consist of 3 and a half acres of land directly over looking the Mississippi River just south of downtown Memphis. On the grounds you will find a sculpture garden, a fully functioning blacksmith shop and foundry, a library holding our permanent collection, and our main Museum which houses rotating exhibitions of emerging and established metalsmiths worldwide. The Metal Museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metal work. This is achieved through exhibitions, collections, conservation, restoration and consulting services, classes, internship and apprenticeship opportunities, and artist residencies. The value of the Metal Museum extends well beyond its exhibitions and facilities recognizing and promoting the careers of metalsmiths.

So glad we stopped here! The grounds are beautiful and serene, and there is a great overlook of the Mississippi River. The museum buildings contained some truly beautiful and artistic pieces, as well as a gift shop that had lovely and unusual items for sale. There is a smithy and a foundry on the premises where you can see demonstrations... More

Appropriately, you navigate through an industrial area dotted with piles of scrap metal to arrive at this lovely museum. Take note of the gates as you enter, they display the work of many different craftsmen. The museum itself is in a historic brick building with tall ceilings and an air of understated elegance. It looks out toward the Mississippi River,... More

Interesting metal works, sculpture, and jewelry in a lovely park-like setting on the Mississippi. Incredible views from the gazebo and a working foundry on site. Very interesting and informative.

This is a must see when you visit Memphis! Go on a day when they are doing exhibitions and you can watch a blacksmith exhibition and a metal pouring exhibition. Very cool! All around the museum and the grounds are works of the local artists. There is also a great view of the Mississippi River!

Stumbled upon this after showing homes. My husband and I decided to stop and and don't regret it. Something cheap to do

The Metal Museum was pretty interesting! We enjoyed it. It filled some time we had after eating lunch. The building next to it has some awesome history so I recommend you look into it.

Beautiful grounds chocked full of history. It's located at a former Civil War fort and there are Indian mounds adjacent to the grounds. Beautiful views of the Mississippi. The front gate alone is a spectacular work of art. Pieces of artwork inside the buildings and scattered around the grounds. We were able to see demonstrations while we were there. The... More

Great place to stop! Beautiful sculptures, jewelry, outdoor metal pieces. My hubby does metal sculpture so we may have more interest than others. The teens enjoyed walking around and taking it in. They had visiting artists at work in the foundry and black smith area.

This place is fantastic! There are some awesome sculptures in the courtyard, a gazebo, a beautiful view of the river. You can see blacksmiths in action, the girl we spoke to said some of them live on the grounds doing residencies. The 2 story museum is chock full of interesting pieces, from drawings to sculptures to jewelry. This is the... More
