We came here from Glasgow City Centre by train which took about 45 minutes and cost a very reasonable £14 return for two people in total (off peak) The train stops at the terminus, Balloch, and the station is a five minute walk from the lakeside from where you can take a boat ride on the loch. The boat rides are either of one hour duration or two hours and there are refreshments on board. There are places to eat and drink in Balloch as well as places to stay and some small shops. You can access a path to take you around Balloch Castle gardens by walking across the bridge, which you will see on the main road by the train station. We felt that the boat trip was the best way to see as much of the loch as we would be able to given the fact that we were on foot and had limited time. In addition, the boat includes an audio narrative of the loch and the surrounding area which you can sit and listen to in comfort as the boat glides across the loch. After departing the boat, we crossed the bridge and took the footpath up to Balloch castle and its gardens which in the autumn sunshine was at its best. It also provides some great vistas of the loch. Super!

I have reviewed many places and hotels from various parts of the world, but this time I am reviewing an attraction just two miles from my home. Loch Lomond shores is a mixed retail and leisure centre near the village of Balloch at the southern end of Loch Lomond. The retail part is a crescent of various shops and cafes. For many years the most prominent retailer was Jennings, an upmarket company whose flagship store was in Princes Street, Edinburgh. However, like many others, it stopped trading a few years ago, and their place was taken over by Mike Ashley, and houses two of his businesses, Sport Direct and Frasers. The other stores are a mix of clothing, Scottish souvenirs, a whisky shop, and one selling a great range of spices etc. However, be warned, make sure you have plenty of credit on your card, for prices are high. Most people who visit don't come for the shopping, but to participate in activities on offer, or just to walk around the shoreline and admire the stunning views of the loch. There are boat trips, you can hire rowing boats, canoes, kayaks, paddle bords, pedalos and bikes. A major attraction is the paddle steamer, Maid of the Loch, which operated for about 30 years until around 1980. Since then it has spent most of the time idle alongside a pier. In more recent years a group of volunteers set up a charity to restore the ship, it has been a very slow process with lack of funds making it difficult, but now she is out of the water and undergoing restoration to hopefully see her back sailing again. Theer is also a Sea Life Centre, housed in a round tower building, at the top there is a cafe from which you get amazing views. You can access it without having to pay and visit the acquarium. Other attraction include a bird of prey centre, a treetop experience with walkways suspended between the trees , picnic areas, crazy golf and a large childrens play area. At times there is a land train to take you around the area, and twice monthly there is a farmers market Car parking is free, and there are hundreds of spaces, including a large number of disabled spaces. This is a popular visit for tourists, but being only 40 minutes from Glasgow by train, and similar to drive, weekends are busy during the spring to autumn seasons, but still popular even in winter, when the nearby Ben Lomond is often snow clad. The village of Balloch is just a short walk away, here you will find a few shops, pubs, restaurants and a supermarket. More boat trips operate from here. If you have never been, I would recommend you give it a visit.
Thank you for taking the time to review Loch Lomond Shores. You've covered off lots and provided good information for those thinking about visiting.

Toilets. Or more precisely, the lack of toilets available to visitors. At one end of the ‘mall’ building there is a Thornton’s Caffé coffee shop. The kind of place you would stop by for a coffee and snack, then toilet break, and then continue the visit. Paraphrasing slightly here: “Excuse me, but where are your toilets?” Standing with small child, and a sense of urgency. “We don’t have any in the cafe. There is one just outside the cafe door into the mall, but it’s closed to the public.” In fact, closed to the staff as well. I was initially directed along the mall to inside the Fraser’s unit. Keep going through it until reaching the perfume section. (There has to be a joke somewhere in this!) Yes, there are toilets. All locked. “Out of order”, said the signs - see the photo. So I asked a worker in the Fraser’s cafe - Cafe Zest - where the nearest toilets were…. So I kept walking through the length of the Fraser’s shop, then through Sports Direct and to the main centre entrance. At last! The long and winding road led me to their door. Well, the entrance at least to the public toilets! What a farcical and potentially embarrassing and uncomfortable situation for anyone in urgent need after a pit stop at a coffee shop. We had earlier been in the upstairs Jurassic Grill food place, and the sign facing the entrance at the top of the first set of stairs does have the good old “polite notice” that the toilets are for patron’s use only. Why have that unless people are repeatedly trying to use their toilets? I spoke at length with the manager of the cafe, and she completely understood my frustration with the situation, but she said that the toilets and how they operate are managed by, I believe, the Loch Lomond Shores Management Company - SC191326. If this is the correct management company, I wonder if they would care to comment? (If it is not this company then I imagine they would be quick to correct this.) ps - the automatic doors at the entrance are also out of order. pps - if you are a patron of any of the retail units then it would seem eminently fair that you can nip upstairs to Jurassic Grill toilets seeing as they are managed by the same company. (No sniggering at the back for pps now!)

Spent a couple of hours here on a very wet Boxing Day morning. Nice that everything is in one place and under cover. Not so nice that the only seating available was outside the building in the wet. There was a cafe, however, which served delicious food and drink with an excellent view of the Loch. I do not walk very well so usually sit somewhere quietly and let her wander around. Without seating, this was impossible.

A trip on Loch Lomond was fantastic, with lovely views, lots of information from the skipper and interesting wild life. A wander through the woods was very relaxing. The surprise was the shopping outlet, which was much bigger than expected. Nice shops and cafes.

We read there was a Christmas Fair and went to see. Not sure what it was all about really. Market style set up with everything from fast food to dog food stalls alongside its bitsy things. The centre itself housed Frasers and Sports Direct alongside several local shops. It felt like an ordinary shopping mall. Outside was a Sealife Centre, which we did not visit.

Came upon this place while driving around Loch Lomond. It’s a place for the summer with bike rental, boat cruises, places for food and an aquarium. Good for families. First impression wasnt great though, walk into building and there was a sport direct store, then I see it’s for foreign tourists who arrive in buses.

Beautiful views Shopping centre full of designer gear and Scottish keepsakes. Picked up some bits and bobs, had a lovely scone and cup of coffee. Definitely worth a look and a visit to LUSS.

Visited here last week with my mum and was really disappointed! There's hardly any shops! We didn't buy anything as after we'd paid for lunch, we had no cash left. Everything is so expensive and there were no bargains. House of Fraser is the nicest shop there, but everything cost so much! There are a few token Scottish souvenir type shops selling things for tourists. It was really busy with coach parties of pensioners and foreign teenagers. There are only two places to eat - Cafe Zest or a small Thornton's coffee shop (with no menu outside so you don't know what they have to eat/drink until you go in and sit down). You can sit outside to eat, but seagulls were swooping down on people trying to get their food. There's burger vans too. We went round it in about 15 minutes. The designer label shop is aimed at much older people, maybe in their 80s. We were really disappointed with our trip.

We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your experience. We've now got Jurassic Grill on site, adding to the Cafe Zest and Caffe at The Shores. There's also a cafe within SEA LIFE you can visit. We do recognise that we don't have a vast amount of stores but we do have a good mix - with high street big names, as well as smaller boutique style stores run by local businesses. However, what what we do have is woodland walks, beaches, SEA LIFE, a Bird of Prey Centre, adventure golf, tree top adventure and lots of boat and water sport activities - hopefully something for everyone. We hope you give us another try and get to enjoy more of what we offer during your next visit!

We rented bikes from Loch Lomond Rentals
€20 for 2 hours for a decent mountain bike, we were ready to go.
We went south to Dumbarton Castle, via a nice bike path along the river. At one point, we even road through a cow pasture, grazing at a short distance.
This is where the problem arose. We missed the locked gate and road through a muddy spot. No worries as we’re on mountain bikes. Bouncing through the mud, the rear derailer somehow caught the spokes and locked up the rear wheel, bending the derailer beyond onsite repair. Their operations team coordinated over whatsapp to find a place to meet us with a replacement bike. While it took 90 mins, stuff happens and we were happy to continue our ride.
On our return, we were charged €90 (40 for the derailer and 50 for delivery of the bike), for what was supposed to be a €40 rental for two bikes.

We disputed the charges as we did nothing abnormal for a mountain bike, or any bike that went through some “cow mud”
After a phone call, they credited back the delivery charge but still charged €40 for damages.

My biggest mistake was to leave a deposit in cash. The credit card company would have charged back the fee.

If I had done something to cause damage, I’d have paid and thanked them for their service to get us going. To not accept damage and our lost time because the bike failed was quite disappointing, nor did the owner even ask to speak to us when we disputed.

It’s sad to see a merchant take advantage of a locked in location.

It is very good indeed for its magnificent view looking up the loch with Ben Lomond and The Maid of the Loch old steamship on the right.
Always felt this was a missed opportunity. The location is wonderful but the concourse and buildings design leave much to be desired. Cold unattractive concrete has not aged well with the passing of time. Ok, in the current circumstances it is a deserted ghostly place. Without the buzz of normal life, the place looks simply a bit run down and tired. I remember the opening days with the visitor centre, Cinema and roof top cafe. All gone. In recent decades, change has meant that you always end up with something less than you had before. So now a facelift is badly needed. We were there for barely half an hour. Seats were iced over so we used car mats to sit on whilst enjoying a much needed hot cup of tea, we had brought in a flask. The view was majestic which still makes the experience worthwhile. 😳

We visited yesterday at 2pm. Last entry is 3pm with closing time of 4pm.
2 adults and 2 children it's not cheap.
Great aquarium, the children had their hands in the rockpools, and saw the otters been fed.
At 320pm we went up to the second floor to find the cinema closed.
The upper viewing gallery was also closed.
Poor communication from the staff on the entrance desk ment we were not aware that it was only the ground floor open after 3pm
1hr and 20mins on the ground floor for £30 if poor value for money.
Surely there should be a discounted rate?
Disappointed....

We were in our way to Conic Hill when my daughter got car sick, so ended up here as it was the closest.
Children liked it as it is a standard day out with a lot of paid activities: sea life, birds of prey, lake activities, etc...
We of course ended up spending a lot more money than hiking, but children enjoyed it.

Thank you for your review and we're glad you children had a good time. There are lots of paid activities at Loch Lomond Shores but as part of the National Park, you can also enjoy woodland walks, picnics on the beach and simple stuff like feeding the ducks and our free adventure play park.

We visited recently but first time for around 7 years and were hugely disappointed.
The lovely up market Jenners store is now transformed into a chavvy Sports Direct and Frasers Outlet department. The cafe and other shops are also no longer special and the surrounding areas are not adequately maintained.
It was sad to see the Maid of the Loch out of the water on trestles being laboriously restored by a group of volunteers, i wish them luck but fear that they have no chance of achieving a re-launch or even opening to the public.
Whilst convoys of tourist coaches still turn up regularly I regret that this place is not the inviting attraction that it used to be and no longer provides a good welcome for visitors to the National Park or the Scottish Highlands.
Sadly I doubt we will return.

Dump! Total embarassment.Noisy funfare crap shops inflated prices ripping off the unsuspecting tourist.
Trippy faced manageress in a cafe (Frasers) scowling at her customers.Even worse moron in a burger van.
Enjoy Balloch and the rest of Loch Lomond but avoid this blot on the landscape!

After returning to Loch Lomond shores for a day out and to get lunch, we ended up with 2 coffees from a van on the loch.
We entered disappointingly into Sports Direct. The beautiful Jenners House of Fraser has been reduced to an ‘outlook’ type feel. Gone are the beautiful array of clothes, makeup and perfume counters. The prices did not reflect the shabby look as it was still overpriced. Walking through Frasers we entered into a type of shoe shop and into a tiny mall area, what happened to the lovely shops! Gone are the restaurants apart from a place called the Dinosaur Grill which use to be a beautiful Scottish restaurant upstairs overlooking the Loch. Loch Lomond Shores has been reduced to what I can only describe as unassuming and disappointing. We won’t be back.

One of my favourite things to do on a Sunday is go for a walk round lomond shores and see if the market is on

It's very nice a walk along the water, checking out the shops and the market stalls
The prices in the shops are expensive so is the wee cafe. But sometimes if there's a sale on you can get some good buys.
It's a lovely way to spend a wee afternoon

This place puzzles me. A sea life centre next to the loch seems reasonable being it is a water based attraction, but the shops... I don't understand.

This is a beautiful water based place to get out and see nature. Why stick a bunch on non-related shops here? Surely no one is visiting just for the shopping - it's miles from anywhere - and if you are out to see nature then the shops are an odd distraction.

I walk past them each visit, to get to the water and picnic spots, and feel I must be missing something in the thinking of the planners!
