Mar Lodge Estate occupies nearly 7% of the Cairngorms National Park, covers some of the most remote and scenic wild land in Scotland, including four of the five highest mountains in the UK.

Within its boundaries are fine examples of classic features of a Highland landscape: remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest, heather moorland, juniper scrub and a part of the high Cairngorm plateau. Fifteen of the Trust's 46 Munros can be found in the Cairngorms around Mar Lodge.

The estate is recognised as one of the most important nature conservation landscapes in the British Isles: over 40% of the estate is covered by national and international nature conservation designations.

We were touring the area and came across the estate where we were led to believe that the Queen stays over to play house occasionally. Beautiful environment, lack of humanity which must come as a welcome relief to HRH. We didn't walk far but appreciated the beauty and solitude of the area.

Hi lyndsay0, Thank you for your wonderful review, we are glad that you enjoyed your visit. Mar Lodge Estate is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland but was originally built by the 1st Duke of Fife and his wife who was Queen Victoria's granddaughter. So while the royal family visited Mar Lodge frequently in the late 1800's and... More

The area around Mar Lodge is lovely, with lots of well sign posted walks. There is adequate parking, which is pay and display. The actual Lodge itself is a fair walk from the parking, The was closed when we went, however you can walk around the grounds any time.

Hi AlisonLoughton, Thank you for your lovely review, we are glad that you enjoyed your visit. For information Mar Lodge itself is made up of self catering holiday apartments and therefore is not normally open to view. However it is sometimes possible to have a look around the public rooms of the lodge if a member of staff is available.... More

WOW - not much more to say really. This lodge is situated in a stunningly beautiful valley. While not everyone will agree or appreciate it's original and continual purpose, hunting, it was ideal for our friends wedding venue. Outside catering obviously and a freedom to use the facilities I haven't come across before.

Having previously enjoyed some walks around the Linn o'Dee, we wanted to explore the region further. It was a cloudy day after the first snow had fallen, and the contrast between the bright oranges and yellows of the forest with the white dusted tops of the hills surrounding Braemar got us excited. We had no particular destination, so we drove... More

From Braemar we drove down to Linn of Dee then continued round until the road ended. This really is a spectacular drive with varied views and vistas including beautiful woodland, differing views and moods of the River Dee and wide riverside plains stretching towards the snow covered peaks beyond. There were also several lovely cottages, my favourite being a gorgeous... More

We stayed in the Macdui apartment in Mar Lodge and had a wonderful time. The apartment is beautiful and very spacious, just perfect for a family holiday. The building itself is very impressive and surpassed only by the setting. The mountains are beautiful and the whole place so peaceful. Great walking and cycling on your doorstep and the rangers based... More

One of the most fantastic venues for a wedding reception. Excellent facilities with spacious accommodation. The Banqueting Hall has to be seen to be believed.

Our days of hill walking are long gone, so our visit was limited to the (albeit very spectacular) drive up river from Braemar ... do pause at the viewpoints ... and a stroll at the Linn of Dee. We felt much more could .. indeed should .... be made if Mar Lodge House. No other Highland shooting lodge is open... More

Went to a very memorable wedding there in August, and couldn't praise the staff and arrangements for the whole day enough. Meals, service, ceremony decor etc. were fantastic. Loved the place.

I have been hiking on Pyrenees, Swiss National Park and the Apls and found the trail here is far more easier and nicer to walk and not too difficult even though some parts are washed off by the flood but you can still go around the trail. The scenery was very beautiful.
