Katy took us, a family of five ranging from 4 to 13 yrs old, on a guided walk/hike in the local area.
It was perfectly paced for all three children. Katy was full of fascinating facts and the children barely noticed the walk - not an easy task with a 13 year old in tow! 3 hours flew by and we enjoyed the rest of our stay all the more having had such an enriching introduction to the area.
Thank you so much for bringing the local landscape to life for us.
Family hikes are great but don’t hesitate to book a guided walk with Katy if you stay in Braemar- it will definitely be worth it!

It was a pleasure to take you out and introduce you all to the area. Always lovely to have fascinated clients and share some of our love for this area! I really hope you enjoyed the rest of your time and Braemar and that you'll be back in the area in the future. Best wishes, Katy

This morning Katy took us on a 3 hour guided walk around a mountain. She was interesting, knowledgeable and nice to be around. We learnt some local history , facts about local plants - the wood sorrel & bilberries in particular were delicious. The weather was kind which helped but she pitched it just right. Would definitely highly recommend. Thank you.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed your walk and the bilberries! They're having a bumper year here. It was lovely to show you a little of the area, and I hope we can welcome you back here again soon.

My wife and I recently toured the Scottish Highlands. I was considering renting a car but was a bit nervous about driving on the left side, roundabouts, as well as avoiding the ramifications of visiting distilleries. I did some research and found The Braemar Highland experience. I had a nice back and forth email correspondence with Katy and Julian Fennema. I decided to ditch the rental car and for less money book Braemar for 2 all day bespoke tours. We were able to craft 2 tours that allowed us to see all the things we knew about, and many places and sites that they were able to recommend outside of our radar. What a fantastic experience. We saw everything in the areas that we wanted to see along with expert and intimate knowledge at every stop. We saw a multitude of natural and historic sites, a cooperage, distillery, and everything in between. It was an incredible informative experience and one we could not have accomplished without their guidance. I cannot sing their praises enough, they truly made our trip a memorable and fulfilling experience.

Thank you so much for such a lovely review. So pleased you enjoyed it - we would have happily spent another week with you showing you more of the area - you were lovely guests! With such a scenic area, it's always rather nice to be able to enjoy it rather than dealing with our roads! Hope you have some great photos of your holiday and that we are able to welcome you to the area again in the future. Best wishes, Katy and Julian

Recently got in touch with Braemar Highland Experience to book a private walking tour up Derry Cairngorm and Beinn Mheadhoin in the Cairngorms. The booking experience and payment option was easy and a plan was made as to when and where we were to meet on the day. Julian was a very safe pair of hands to lead me on this epic - 19+ mile, 2 Munro - day in the hills. He provided chat when required but knew when to leave me to slog it out on the tough bits. He followed my lead when I asked to stop to refuel or when I just needed to breath! He set a decent pace and at no point did I feel rushed - which was just as well as the weather gods were smiling on us and gave plenty of opportunities for me to stop for photos of the stunning scenery. I certainly plan to book BHE again for another jaunt into the mountains - if Julian can put up with my chat!

Thank you for the lovely review, and for the lovely day in the hill. We certainly enjoyed ourselves with some great views, I hope that the photos are really good. Chat and company was ideal - Julian is already hatching some plans for other days out with you.

I do not understand how this can only be rated the 6th best thing to do in Braemar, since it was among, if not the best, activity my family did on our week long trip through Scotland. First, Katy's communication leading up to our trip to insure she tailored an itinerary that would meet my families needs was outstanding. We settled on a mix of the off road tour and some local sites as well. She was prompt in meeting us, even when we were late, and got us to a local shop to get sandwiches to eat on the tour as we missed our window for lunch - she was so very accommodating and took amazing care of us. Her insights to local history and about local wildlife were great - she kept even our 15, 13 and 9 year old daughters engaged. We have recommended this to everyone we know visiting Scotland. Beautiful country and a very professional and interesting tour with a lot of personality and personalization. Well worth the time and money to spend the afternoon with BHE! Also, we left one of our cell phones in their vehicle and they were nice enough to deliver it to the hotel the next morning before our departure.

Katy took us to Glen Taitneach for an off-road drive through pastures and two small streams. She was sensitive to our desire to take photos, stopping when we asked and at numerous other times when there was flora, fauna, geographic feature, or man-made structure of interest. Her knowledge of the glen's flora and fauna is extensive. The advertised time for our excursion was 3 hours, but because there was so much to show us, we spent nearly 4 delightful hours with her. We will hire BHE the next time we are in Scotland.

My friend and I joined Katie this morning for a truly wonderful experience. She has such a wide historical knowledge of the area which she relayed in a most interesting way. We saw lots of wildlife including two herds of deer, a lapwing family and a grouse family as well as other birds too numerous to mention.
The journey off road was stunning, wild and remote with the only inhabitants being the wildlife.
We stopped at the half way point for a stretch of our legs and a wee dram accompanied by lush homemade shortbread (a great touch).
We would certainly go again.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed your tour with us! It was a pleasure to show you some of the area and I was particularly pleased that the deer chose to appear in large numbers! We'd be delighted to welcome you on a tour again! Best wishes, Katy

We booked this tour through Callater Lodge B&B, the B&B owners are also part owners of this business. Our guide was Eric, an ex-shepherd, who took us on some pretty inaccessible 4WD roads to the high country behind Braemar. We saw less animals than were listed on their brochure, but did see lots of grouse including chicks, lots of mountain hares plus a number of red deer in the distance. The landscape was very impressive and spectacular. We enjoyed the tour and seeing the countryside, but were expecting more stories and local anecdotes from our guide.

Many thanks for your review. I'm so pleased you were excited by the landscape on our tour - it never fails to wow me! Unfortunately we can never guarantee wildlife - each day is different, but I'm pleased you saw some grouse chicks - at this age they look rather adorable as they make their first attempts at flying!

A wonderful tour of the Scotland Highlands. Julian was so knowledgable and kind. He went way above and beyond to make sure we saw everything we wanted and included some incredibly breath taking views of Loch Ness and some of the off the beaten path treasures. I highly recommend their tours! You will not be disappointed.

I climbed Lochnagar with Julian on the 27th June, what a fantastic day we
had. Julian's organisation was ideal, good communication up front with a
clear discussion of objectives, alternatives and appropriate kit. The walk
itself was wonderful, a route full of great views and brought further to
life with stories about the mountain and its wildlife, and a few tales from
mountain rescue too. I can really recommend people following my footsteps
with this excellent and experienced guide.
