I'm former Royal Navy, but I'd never heard of this terrible, terrible disaster until I was there. It affected the whole island for generations, so I felt compelled to pay my respects. You cannot go to Lewis and Harris and not hear of or feel...More

In it's centenary year since the disaster the memorial is an interesting and poignant place to visit. We were also lucky enough to be in Stornoway while the exhibition about the disaster is on in the Town Hall. What a tremendous amount of work has...More

100 years since this disaster. The story is a really tragic one and reading the monument brings it home. Very clean and tidy tribute to all those who died.

This a very moving memorial to the victims of the Iolaire disaster of 1919, when men coming back to the island from WWI were drowned when their boat sank. There is an area where you can sit and look out at the rock pillar that...More

Really brings home the cost of lives claimed by the sea to these islands. Also see the Lews Castle museum for a book on the payments paid out to families of those who perished in the Iolair disaster. Names their wives and children and makes...More

No expense spared in the quality of work involved in creating this beautiful memorial to those who died in this dreadful disaster. Well worth a visit to pay respects and well done to the island community who created this.
