About
This glorious 260ha estate was once the playground of David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassillis – a man who was keen to impress with his wealth and status. Opulent to the extreme, the park is planted with conifers and beech, sculpted around miles of sandy coastline dotted with caves, and finished off with a Swan Pond, an ice house, flamboyant formal gardens and fruit-filled glasshouses. The castle itself is perched on the Ayrshire cliffs, incorporating everything the earl could wish for in his country home. It was designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century and is filled to the turrets with treasures that tell the stories of the people who lived here.

- Lee SFayetteville, Arkansas259 contributionsGreat Sunday day out. While visiting friends in Glasgow we decided to drive an hour south to see the castle. It was a wonderful day exploring the grounds, walking the beach, and touring one section of the castle. Highly recommend it for couples, families, kids, etc. Really special place.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 14, 2023
- RachroooBelfast, United Kingdom26 contributionsGreat staff, they made the visitWe had a great visit. It's a lovely place. Castle and Park. Stunning Robert Adam designs, including lovely staircase. But our visit was made much better by the staff on site on Saturday Oct 14. They were all friendly and helpful but Colin was particularly helpful and informative. Fiona too. I didn't catch other names but all very professional. I didn't think there was enough information in the rooms or on the site generally so I was glad of the friendly staff. It's right on the coast so there are some nice walks. And shop and gallery.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 15, 2023
- Katie16 contributionsAmazing interiorsAmazing interior and exterior to this Castle and Country Park. It was a beautiful day when I visited which helped but I'm sure the ground are incredible any day of the year. Really enjoyed the interiors of the building and the staff were really friendly and helpful, answering questions and chatting through the history of the building.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten October 31, 2023
- Ali T9 contributionsA must visitI pay NTS membership just for this place. It's amazing, great fora nice walk, the castle is gorgeous when it's open in the summer and the adventure playground is so good I drive an hour to get there. Be sure to stop by the walled garden too!Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 6, 2024
- Bob50MAyrshire, United Kingdom585 contributionsAwesomeHaving joined the National Trust, this place appeals even more with free entry for members. Easily located between Maybole and Heads of Ayr, you are immediately hit with the lovely countryside as soon as you turn into the gates. A long drive down the road to the castle you have a choice to park left or right on route depending on which part of the grounds you want to visit. There is plenty parking but was very busy on a bank holiday. Lots of walks and lovely gardens could fill your afternoon without the castle which is stunning both inside and out. There are plenty areas for picnics, shops, art galleries and eating places. Well worth a visit.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 6, 2024
- Sightseer4774968996743 contributionsBeautiful placeWhat a beautiful place this is. Extensive grounds which you could happily spend all day walking around. A beach, if you don't mind some steep steps, beautiful cultivated gardens, extensive woodland, views out to sea. I was staying on a campsite next door and joined National Trust Scotland just to walk my little dog around here every day in lovely weather. Only negative is my dog was not permitted in the castle (understandable), secondhand bookshop and gift shop (not so understandable), so i couldn't spend my money there.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 28, 2024
- michellecarrierCoventry, United Kingdom174 contributionsWow!Wow! This really does have it all. Beach and countryside walks, historical building to walk around, second hand book shop, cafe. We didn't have our children as it was a romantic weekend away, but they would have loved it! The playground looked fabulous. We were able to use our National Trust card to get in.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 29, 2024
- Shelley C3 contributionsGreat day outWe only discovered the castle last year and have been back several times. A lovely place with plenty to do. Lots of different walks, coastal, woodland and formal gardens. The castle itself is interesting and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Particularly impressed with customer care, i lost my new glasses around the castle at easter. They were found and staff contacted me and kept them safe until i could return today and pick them up. 10/10 thank you, especially the castle staff.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 31, 2024
- SuratrichardSurat Thani, Thailand2,513 contributionsAbsolutely fantastic! The. National Trust of Scotland own some amazing places but Culzean Castle is surely one of the best. It’s more than just a castle…the extensive grounds are superb, there’s an excellent cafe and the views from the castle looking towards the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig are stunning. There plenty of car parking nearby and as you enter the Court yard, you will see the cafe, gift shop and toilets. If you are a member of the English National Trust, then entrance is free. Culzean does attract a large number of tourist groups so it’s probably best to arrive as early as possible. There is a link with General Eisenhower so it’s very popular with visitors from the USA. We chose to make our own way round and it really is a fascinating place. There are many stairs but I think there is a lift so that’s worth enquiring about. Take time! Some of the ceilings are magnificent and the famous staircase is worthy of study. The armoury display is amazing and as you work your way to the top of the castle, you cannot fail to notice the views out to sea. Everywhere in the castle is so interesting from Eisenhower’s study to the Castle’s kitchen…there’s so much to admire! And so to the grounds…they are very extensive and when we visited, the rhododendrons and azaleas were in full bloom. There is a camellia house and thousands of trees and shrubs, all superbly maintained. There are seats around to rest weary feet and reflect on the beautiful surroundings. It’s not difficult to spend the whole day here with several visits to the excellent cafe. Good footwear and fully charged phone/camera batteries are essential ( non flash photography is allowed inside the Castle.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 7, 2024
- Derrick F MRhondda, United Kingdom487 contributionsA very pleasant visit, great park.Very impressive building, only parts open to the public. So many firearms etc on display! Very interesting place to visit and the rest of the park a great place to picnic or simply relax. The entrance fee of £20 is a wee bit high.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 8, 2024

We were at Culzean Castle for the Ruff Dugger canicross event and had already decided we would explore the grounds afterwards (the castle itself is closed for the winter). There are a number of trails to explore around the site, the run gave me a chance to explore some of them the clifftop trail in particular is amazing and then you come out to see the castle itself which is breathtaking! Such a spectacular building. There are follies hidden away, adventure parks for the kids and deer and llamas to say hello to. We were parked at the Swan Pond end and left the car there to walk to Home Farm. There is a cafe there, it could do with outside seating under cover as dogs aren't allowed inside and it was the usual mix of February Scottish weather! The cafe is what dropped the rating down, there wasn't much of a selection and the scones were a bit on the hard side. My OH would like to return and visit the castle itself when it is open, and with so many walks he can take his time as I have plenty to explore with the dogs and take them for a walk around the grounds, though we will possibly opt to bring a picnic next time.

Well done on completing Ruff Dugger and glad to hear you enjoyed exploring the country park.
We are sorry to hear that you were left somewhat disappointed by Home Farm. We do have umbrellas for cover however these have been temporarily removed due to the recent high winds we have experienced. We do hope you visit again when we are fully open for the season and have a larger selection on offer.

We were staying close by for a couple of nights and headed down here for a walk with the dogs. We were stopped at the barrier and told it would be £26 for access for 2 adults, we were confused as I had previously read it was free to wander around the park. We asked what the payment was for as I was confused if this price was access to the castle which we didn't want. The guy just laughed in our faces and went on to explain in a patronising manner that it is a nationl trust and the castle costs millions every year to maintain etc etc. His attitude was disgusting and we were made to feel cheap and stupid for asking the question. At that point we should have turned around and found somewhere else but regrettably we paid and entered the park.
The grounds are lovely and well maintained so we wouldn't mind having to pay a small fee just to walk around but £26 was extortionate considering nothing was open. We were there for about 2 hours walking the dogs and only came across one bin which meant we were carrying around poo bags the whole time. It felt like quite a snobbish place and felt we couldn't let the dogs off lead for a run around. It probably wasn't the right place for this so I'll do better research next time.
The experience was ruined by the member of staff at the barrier, he was extremely rude so regardless of how pretty the surroundings were we already had a bitter taste and we definitely won't be back.

We had a great day out at Culzean Castle in some glorious Scottish sunshine, spending a good 3 hours exploring with our young dog. She loved the beach and the chance to hop in the sea, but the shady woodland then gave her somewhere to escape the sun! Cafe options were a bit limited and on the pricy side, and there wasn't really an option for any fresh fruit or vegetables as part of the lunches on offer. On the plus side the country park is beautifully laid out with plenty of trails and signage to help find your way around.

The National Trust's investment continues to be evident with the extent of the park increasing to offer outdoor beauty for all the family. A 3 mile walk through the Whale coastal path up to the castle and around the walled garden reaped such great rewards of stunning views, wildlife and plants. This is obviously well managed and with ample parking, cafe stop and quirky boardwalks I encourage you to go, enjoy and support the amazing preservation in a truly stunning location.

This is a beautiful castle with lovely grounds. Unfortunately, we had just missed a tour and therefore we went round the castle by ourselves. At £20 per person, I would expect a more informative experience. There is no audio guide, no explanatory video, no app to provide more detail as you walk round each room. So you are left with the old style cards in each room which provide minimal detail and almost no historical context. We saw 5 tour guides as we went round but 4 of these disappeared as soon as we entered the room - they didn’t seem to want to interact with visitors, tell stories about the castle or answer questions. We were hugely disappointed - for history enthusiasts, it was not worth the £20 entry fee and was actually dull. National Trust for Scotland should be ashamed at charging guests for such a poor experience. If going, I would suggest you check the website and join a tour.

Absolutely brilliant place. Castle wasn’t open today as we visited out of season but there was still so much to explore. Bring comfortable shoes because it’s a trek! There are several different walking routes and various buildings to see along them. We didn’t realise how big a trek it was going to be, we left the car at the home park bit and walked right down to the play park. My 6 year old was exhausted when it was time to walk back up for lunch.
We visited the store, second hand book shop and the home kitchen cafe. Home kitchen cafe was very good, food was clearly made fresh and was reasonably priced as well. Feels like the place could do with a block of toilets near the centre / south of the grounds and maybe a small kiosk for coffees etc if the aviary isn’t open.
Can easily spend an entire day here.

Went here Today (Easter Sunday), bearing in mind nothing is open inside, Castle, coffee shop ( only take away), I was asked at the gate if we were members, which we're not, was then told it was £9.50 per person to enter!! Now whilst I don't mind paying that amount if I could avail of all the amenities, IMO charging that amount, to walk around a forest is frankly a p**s take. Even charging a nominal amount per car is acceptable, not charging the full amount. My advice, find other attractions in the area which are either free or less than half the price of this place. No I didn't pay, I drove straight out & found somewhere else for a walk.

Only had time for a quick stop but wanted to see their gift shop. Was refused entry to just the gift shop as they wanted us to pay the 13 pounds per person for entry to just see the gift shop. Very disappointing they don’t have an entry for just the gift shop and/or tea room

We visited the country park with our dog and had a great day. The castle isn't open but the gardens and the park are open and we were able to go down on to the beach. The cafe is open for take away food abd is serving tasty soup, filled rolls, chips, sausage rolls, cakes and ice cream. You have to queue but they had a good system in place to ensure social distancing. We didn't realise we should have booked in advance but will do so next time. This is to
avoid overcrowding on busy days. It was great to be back at Culzean Castle it's such a beautiful place to visit

Culzean castle is such an amazing place and one of my favourite places, not only because I have ancestry connections to this place but it is a beautifully kept castle and gardens. It easy to see why it's the jewel in the national trust's crown as they say.
There is endless trails and stunning gardens and currently some beautiful sculptures dotted around, it would take weeks to explore it all.
It is quite pricey to get in but its definitely worth buying the NTS membership just for this place alone!

Used to live in Alloway for 18 years until I joined the RN now live in Scarborough. From Troon head into Ayr and through the town follow signs out to Alloway worth a stop lots of Burns history - past Burns Cottage on the right keep on the same road aim for Burns Monument - should be sign posted (on the left) go over the bridge at The Burns Monument Hotel (also on the left) then turn right and aim for Doonfoot. At the bottom of the road there is a roundabout go left you are now at Doonfoot follow the coast road until Dunure (lovely harbour worth a stop) follow the road through Dunure and enjoy seeing the view over the sea to Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig - continue along the road until the road runs out (Culzean should be sign posted at the junction). Turn right onto the main road and Culzean is a few miles down the road on the right. English National Trust cards are accepted at the gate. Enjoy - fab place. Hope this helped.
