Heartwarming
Aug 2021 • Friends
I loved the baby seals learning how to catch a fish! Abandoned by their mothers but saved by the team at Hillswick. The sanctuary has recently received a grant which has enabled them to improve their facilities and help abandoned and needy creatures. What a fantastic job they do. I will definitely visit again.

Seal visit
Aug 2019 • Couples
My wife and I visited the sanctuary today and met the three baby seal pups who have recently been rescued. Compliments to all the volunteers and helpers for being so informative and knowledgeable. Please if visiting leave a donation to aid the sanctuary. The pups can't help but make you smile. Will definitely visit again.

So informative and refreshing

On our visit there was two very young common seals, one was only a few days old found making its way through a field, so sweet and vocal. When you look into the eyes of the pup your heart just melts. They where so cute and helpless, the work Jan Bevington is doing is amazing. And she is also a very warm and welcoming person. I would personally like to thank her for all she does. She is so dedicated and loves what she does thank you for taking the time to show us your orphans, it was eye opening.
We will never forget our visit with you. Hope the 5 week art festival goes well in late June and July.

I was here a few years back. It was worth visiting to meet Jan & Pete & the awesome job they do.
Their place is right in front of the water. It is beautiful. Shetland is amazing and full of hidden little gems in every corner.
I will definetely go back to Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary when I go back to the islands.

A wonderful, inspiring organization living life on the edge!
Sep 2014 • Solo
I will preface this and say that I have volunteered here twice now and it's one of my favorite places in the world. You're in the middle of nowhere on the edge of the world. The scenery can't be beat and the sanctuary is amazing. Run by the resourceful and wonderful Jan & Pete who have dedicated their lives to rehabilitating wildlife in corner of the planet where there are few other options for these beautiful creatures. Operated entirely by donations and funds, their operation is smaller scale, but they make up for it in the complete care and deviation they give to the animals they are taking care of. In the last few years, they have opened up a second-hand charity shop with all proceeds going to fund the sanctuary. Jan and Pete are two of the busiest people I know...so if you plan to visit this organization, give a call ahead to make sure they will be around and able to show you any animals they might have in. And, if you're feeling like pitching in to help, ask them if there's anything you can do to help out! You just might find yourself suddenly part of a project! Wonderful, down-to-earth people who, after spending 2 weeks volunteering there the first time, and 3 weeks the second time, will always hold a special place in my heart.

Not quite as seen on TV

This place is really not obvious but as Hillswick is a small village, just ask and they will point you in the right direction. Noted for its care of abandoned sea mammals, the Santuary has featured on several wildlife programmes. No doubt they do greatmwork and kids can get up close to seal pups and maybe an otter if they are really lucky, but there's not much to the place. We have seen otters in the wild every time we have visited Shetland and newly born seal pups too. Visit if you feel it's a worthy cause and leave a small donation for their good work, otherwise get out to the coast to really see wildlife and leave this one to the pre-schoolers.
