We provide information and interpretation on the history of the Caledonian Canal, as well as an activities booking service and gift shop. Come and learn about the canal, sign up for some canoeing, whitewater rafting or canyoning, and take home some unique souvenirs made by Scottish designers and manufacturers. We have maps and information on how you can travel along the length of the Caledonian Canal, or the Great Glen Way between each of the stopping-off points, how long it will take, facilities, etc. The canal and lock gates outside our door make up the living museum which is the Caledonian Canal.

The history and the building of the canal was of great interest with Thomas Telford being reknowned as an engineer. Having visited, the bonus was to be able to step out and see the step lochs in full working order. Fort Augustus can be a little busy at times but is well worth a visit.

We tried to stop and see this, as it sounded interesting and informative. (I am a civil engineer, and this sounded right up my alley). However, it was closed for lunch both times we dropped by, although the signs did not mention that.

The canal is located in Fort Augustus and there are a lot of pubs and cafés along the canal for a quick bite or a drink.

This is located in Fort Augustus which is a lovely little town center to stop for lunch or to stretch your feet and let the kids run around. I saw many families there. You will be able to sit eat lunch or a snack and watch the canals fill up. Comfy and peaceful.

Enjoyed reading about the construction of the canal and being able to see it in action. Boat trips are available into Loch Ness.

Thanks for sharing your recommendations and I wish we'd stopped in sooner so that we could have gotten the list of guided walks and tours. They looked really interesting!

The visitors centre was staffed by a very friendly and helpful person. There was a small range of good quality tourist items and information books for sale. The canal across the road is worth seeing. Nice small town.

We visited the Caledonian Canal Centre it is at the very start of the Caledonian Canal in Fort Augustus The young girl who works there was very chatty and she told us lots about the area and the restaurants . We decided on a trip to Inverness and she checked the bus times for us . You can buy souvenirs... More

If you want to learn about the history of the canal, and the surrounding area, then this is the place to visit. As well as being able to view photos and read how the canal was built you can also buy various souvenirs (not the usual tacky stuff). Definitely worth visiting
