Discover 1,000 years of drama, experience a glimpse of medieval life and enjoy stunning views over Loch Ness from the ruins of the greatest castle in the Highlands. Climb the Grant Tower that watches over the iconic loch, peer into a miserable prison cell, said to have held the legendary Gaelic bard Domhnall Donn, and imagine the splendid banquets staged in the great hall. A more comfortable view of the iconic ruins, against a backdrop of Loch Ness and the hills of the Great Glen, can be enjoyed from the café. Urquhart’s stories are also told through a remarkable collection of artefacts left by its residents, historic replicas, including a full-sized, working trebuchet siege engine, and a short film. The castle has a distinctly Highland heritage and the site has witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in our nation’s history. This is where St Columba is said to have worked miracles in the 6th century, where acts of chivalry and defiance provided inspiration during the Wars of Independence and where the MacDonald Lords of the Isles struggled with the Crown for power.

Everyone should have the opportunity to visit this beautiful and historic place. On the banks of the staggering Loch Ness it has an amazing tale to tell.

A gorgeous castle that was all you imagined it to be! Simply stunning place however information inside was not as good as I hoped for.

We had a fantastic afternoon! The lady at the pay desk did tell us to watch the film before going down to the castle. We were just about to leave the building when we spotted people going into the film theatre. So glad we did....More

Great views over Loch Ness. Good place to spend an hour or two, more in the Summer if it's warm. Lots of steps at the castle itself and steps and a steep slope down to it from the entrance. Ticket prices a bit on the...More

This was very interesting to see this old fort/castle. The history on it was educational and easy to get around. We were dropped off for an hour and that was plenty of time to see everything.

Urquart Castle is a fascinating remnant of Scottish history. It has lots of nooks and crannies, and is super for well-behaved children, who could be left to run about and explore by themselves in a relatively safe environment. Stunning views of Loch Ness and a...More

Not the easiest of places to reach by public transport from Inverness but worth the hassle of getting there. The tickets were expensive and the cafe menu was disappointing. The film presentation at the start of the tour was interesting and informative (and not too...More

We took the ferry across Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle on a cold windy day. Be prepared, this place can be windy and with the wind whipping off of Loch Ness it can be very cold. The castle ruins are beautiful and any amateur photographer...More

Visited in mid August. There were a lot of people visiting the Castle while we were there. The castle sits on a point of land with great views up and down Loch Ness. The castle itself is in ruins, to the point that it was...More

If you enjoy castle ruins, I would recommend cruise and castle tour. If castles are not your key interest, the cruise with views of the castle would work.
