- AbClareAberdeen, United Kingdom613 contributionsInteresting tourWe visited with a Virgin Experience voucher and enjoyed a tour and samples of 3 whiskies. The tour was interesting and informative, but what really made it was the tour guide, Roy! He was fantastic - funny, entertaining and certainly knew his stuff. Think this experience could have been mediocre without him. Thanks Roy!Thank you for your lovely review, we're so pleased you found your tour with Roy fantastic! We shall pass on your lovely feedback. - Role67 contributionsExcellent distillery experience.Had a fascinating hour and a half's tour here with my wife and sons, aged 12, 16 and 18. You start with a short film in a plush cinema room, and are then shown round the distillery and learn about the whole whisky-making process. A young man showed us round who was very informative. There is a museum which is a recreation of the Dewar's offices in (London?) as part of the tour, and you look around this independently for 20 minutes or so, before the final part where you taste two of the whiskies and are shown the "right" way to do it. If you are driving, or wish to taste your whisky later, you can take it home in a small labelled glass Dewar's bottle. There is a cafe, which we didn't use, and a smart shop with bottles up to £3000 in value! Recommend a visit, even if you aren't particularly fond of whisky.Thank you for taking the time to leave us a 5-star review, we're so pleased you and your family enjoyed your experience with us and learnt a lot about how we make our whiskies. - Mettbrötchen876 contributionsShort tasting stopWe didn't do a tour, just came to test. In the cozy bar we were served super nice. My husband tested Aberfeldys and I a “Mamie Taylor”, for the daughter there was juice and crisps. Value for money really good. We would definitely come back!Thank you for your lovely review! We're delighted to hear you had a great time in our whisky lounge and enjoyed all the drinks you tried. - Wifey26Bristol, United Kingdom45 contributionsGo here, even if you don't like whisky (madness) you wont regret it!We decided last minute to book a distillery tour at DeWar's Aberfeldy Distillery. Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome and explored the shop before our tour began. The tour started in the auditorium with an introductory film. Initially, my husband thought we'd made a mistake, but the film and subsequent museum visit proved him wrong. The museum offered fascinating insights into the family's history and their distillery. I’d suggest a small tweak by adding an audio tour to enhance the experience. Our tour guide, Craig, was fantastic, walking us through the whisky crafting process. Despite having driver's tickets, we were encouraged to engage with the samples, noticing the subtle scent differences. Post the tasting session (for those that were drinking), we bottled our samples to taste later and returned to the shop to buy a bottle and a water dropper. It was fascinating to see how a drop of water altered the whisky's taste. Craig, though new, was incredibly knowledgeable and ensured everyone, including non-whisky drinkers, enjoyed the tour. We highly recommend visiting DeWar's Aberfeldy Distillery and look forward to returning next time we are in Scotland.Thank you for your 5-star review. We're delighted to hear you had a brilliant time on your tour with Craig and hope you enjoyed sampling your whiskies. We look forward to hopefully welcoming you back on your next trip to Scotland!Written November 15, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 24, 2024

There's a cafe with plenty of seating and a lovely fire. The whole area is very smart, with plenty of space to move about. You can have the top of your bottle dipped in gold wax and have your initials stamped onto the lid. Very cool feature 😎Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review. My girlfriend and I went to the Aberfeldy Distillery to go on the Dewar’s Aberfeldy Experience.
The tour begins with a film reel in a comfortable small theatre room, informing you of some of the history of John Dewar and his consequent sons. This is then immediately followed by a museum like experience where you can go around varying displays and delve even deeper in to the history of John Dewar & Sons, observe how they expanded and how they became one of the most popular whisky brands in the world. The only downside to the tour was the Smartify app was not working but that appeared to be on the Smartify end rather than the distilleries.
After this you are taken around the distillery, going through key rooms and locations where the processes of Whisky making are explained in excellent detail. Our tour guide, Cameron, was particularly knowledgable but often elected to talk to the tour group and involve us in the explanation. As someone who has visited many distilleries, I enjoyed that it felt like we were working together on this endeavour. We also got the chance to speak to one of the workers in the wash back room and learn more about what they were doing and how they test the soon to be whisky.
The tour ended with a tasting and it was curated well, with myself paying the extra to be able to try a single cask version of the whisky as well. We saw the whisky get taken from the cask and poured into our glasses which we got to keep, a great visual accompaniment to the experience.
One of my favourite whisky tours that I have been on, in particular thanks to our guide Cameron. We was friendly, knowledgable and answered all the questions that our tour group had for him.

We did the Connoisseur Experience with the food pairing upgrade. The first 30 minutes was a short film and an at leisure wander round the museum which was very interesting. Then came the guide our was called Tam and he was very knowledgeable and answered all questions that wee thrown at him. We were shown all the stages of creating the whisky then down to the tasting. Now I am not a whisky lover but even I found one I liked. It was a bit expensive but what can I say I liked what I liked. My husband was shocked to say the least that I actually drunk some but, did take more that I drank home but I tried. The small plate of food that came with the tasting was very nice and helped soak up some of the alcohol. I’ve done a few distillery tours and this was the best one so far.

We've done a couple of distillery tours in Scotland. The Dewar's tour is very extensive and informative compared to the others. You learn a lot about the different processes of making blended and single malt whisky. The star of our tour was our tour guide Roy, a natural storyteller who knows a lot about whisky and is very honest.

Mixed feelings. We booked the tour last minute, so probably didn’t read everything properly. At no point during the booking process, however, was it made clear that the production area is currently inaccessible due to Covid, which we found a great disappointment. Having rechecked the website later, I still couldn’t find that information anywhere. Also, if you are looking for an independent distillery, don’t be fooled by the frequent use of words such as “traditional” on their website. The owner is Bacardi and again, the website doesn’t mention that. Another disappointment but I guess we should have done our research.
On arrival you have your temperature taken and a member of staff checks you in for your tour. The guy who we had to deal with (Bruce?) was quite brusque and abrupt. For the first point of contact on site, they could definitely do with someone friendlier and with better customer skills. You are not allowed to wear your own face mask as “it is a live production site” and they force you to wear one of theirs, but like I’ve mentioned before, you don’t even go anywhere near the production area. First, you get to watch a short film and then find yourself left to your own devices and trapped in the museum area for 45 mins. The actual tour basically consisted of a brief talk delivered in one of the former warehouses. The guide was nice enough, but we couldn’t help the feeling that it was all rushed through and done half-heartedly. After probably 15 mins max we were taken to the bar for tasting. Again, a very brief talk from the guide, drink up and go home.
Hardly any guidance on tasting, and the guide was with his back to us anyway as he seemed to be concentrating his attention on the other table (there were 5 of them and 2 of us but that doesn’t make us less valuable guesses).
We have visited quite a few distilleries before and this one was the worst so far. To make things even worse, they have a truly idiotic one way system in place, which does nothing but create chaos. Once in, if you need to go to the toilet, or are visiting the shop only, you end up queuing with everyone else outside and being bossed around by Bruce, unless you come with the guide, then the 2 meters rule goes out of the window and the whole group is allowed to push through the narrow entrance, past other people.
I’m really not sure where all the enthusiastic comments come from as we were left feeling quite puzzled after the bizarre experience. I’d recommend you go elsewhere.

We’re sorry to hear that you have mixed feelings about your visit.
To re-open safely, we have had to adjust our tour structure to our Silent Season offering. All of the information relating to how the tours work and measures in place can be found on the COVID page and individual tour pages of our website. We’re sorry that you missed these details.
As a manufacturing facility, we must maintain an approved standard specification of face mask to be worn by all staff and visitors to the distillery, regardless of where you go there is a cross contamination risk and we are trying to keep everyone as safe as possible.
Bruce is personally upset by being named in your comments, he is one of our longest serving guides and while he clearly didn’t give his usual high level of service, he does deeply care about our guests' enjoyment. As you point out, we generally get excellent reviews and will work with the team to understand why your experience was different.
Thank you for your review.

The distillery is very beautiful, there's a very nice small museum. Unfortunately the tour was kind of weird - the guide was more like an entertainer, roared and yelled - but did not provide too much useful infra information nor answered questions properly. The tour ended with tasting that was also not properly guided. The 20 years old cask sample was kind of disappointing but probably because I came with high expectations.

We were here this week and did one of the tours. Overall the short film at the beginning and the museum next was very interesting. Then our tour guide came to get us, he was knowledgeable and we saw all the processes of whisky making. The tastings were very good and having booked the consuiers tour we were given 6 extra whiskys all very good choices. So the only reason not given a 5* on our rating came down to the tour guide. Ian should stop yelling at people , some may take offense. Our tour had a family with a disabled teen with them who could have been extremely scared. We really felt for everyone targeted. Definantly made you afraid to ask questions. We would definantly come again but not do a tour with the same guide again. Sorry.

Aberfeldy Distillery is simply beautiful, I took part in one of the tours and Jamie (our tour guide) delivered a brilliant tour. He was very funny and caring towards his tour group, a credit to the distillery, we opted for the extra sample and we weren’t disappointed. The tour itself was well planned out and the tasting areas were relaxing and the whisky was even better. Well worth a visit to the bar and shop too!

We booked the £9 basic tour and knew in advance that the production area was closed. Some people on here seem surprised but I read it before hand either on the website or in the email so just do some research. You get shown a movie at the start which was interesting then placed in a museum for 45 minutes and left to your own devices. This was perhaps too long to be in there however each to their own. Our tour guide was very enthusiastic and it was nice that he was from the local area. It would have been nice to have spent some more in the room with the casks since the production area was closed. The whisky tasting was good though. Didn’t realise they were owned by Bacardi so that takes the traditional-ness out of it a little.

A nice combination of video introduction, museum time and explanation in the warehouse, finished off with two drams of whiskey. A wonderful greeting from staff and a well organised experiemce that took 2 hours. The tablet we used in tje museum section made it interactive and our guide was very personable. Masks are required during all parts of this tour. Some discounts in the gift shop for ticket holders. I think the basic tour offered good value for money at £9 per adult or £7 for students. A well run operation and tasty whiskey.

Although the production area is closed for visiting at the moment, we had a great talk delivered by a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic young man. I went for the connoisseur tour and for that you get a 27 year old dram straight from the cask and 5 premium drams sitting poured and waiting for you.
The self guided part in the museum was rather interesting and it was augmented with use of their ipads to scan areas in order to read more info.
Can thoroughly recommend and I'd like to do it again when folk can to the full tour

Can I bring a dog on holiday in aberfeldy. My relative Mary Stewart use to work there
Written April 9, 2018
Hi Carol,
Unfortunately we don't allow dogs in the distillery, with the exception of guidance dogs.
However, Aberfeldy in general is a great location to bring your dog, with lots of beautiful walks in the locality, and lots of dog friendly cafes and pubs.

I see that the distillery is open until 1600 on Sundays in August. If I came by at 14:30 would I be able to join a tour or is the last tour really at 13:30? Thank you.
Written March 30, 2018
The last tour (90 mins) starts indeed at 13.30. It includes a self-guided visit to the museum, but even if you skip that 14.00 would be the latest opportunity to join the tour. If you are not fixed on Dewar’s there is always Edradour distillery down the road.

Is Aberfeldy Distillery disabled visitor friendly? Can someone in a wheelchair access tour areas?
Written March 12, 2018
Hi Sandra,
We offer full wheelchair access in the whisky lounge, cafe and distillery shop as well as the heritage centre and warehouse. Access is limited in the distillery due to stairs, please call +44 (0)1887 822010 or email us for more information.
You can check out our accessibility by visiting the FAQ page on the website - unfortunately I'm unable to add links into this answer.
We also have a full access statement if required.

Hi there, we are about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Edinburgh by car.
If you will not be driving during your stay, there is a small group tour company called Rabbie's that does day trips out of Edinburgh, and they stop at our distillery. A good way of visiting us and seeing some of the other beautiful sites of Scotland at the same time.
