This unpreposessing site turned out to be very interesting and informative, especially for a traveler from Texas. Prior to this visit, I knew very little about Britain's part in the Napeolonic Wars. I found the battery along with the Martello Tower to be very interesting.

Ness Battery is the most accessible and best preserved of Mainland Orkney’s many WWI and WWII installations. Owned by the local council, it can be seen only via one-hour tours that give you an overview of the Hoy Sound defenses, a look at one of...More

Really enjoyed this tour. A must for those interested in Orkney in the wars. Guide was very knowledgeable and clearly enjoyed his job. My husband who is not a military enthusiast loved it.

Ness Battery is not your usual visitor attraction. It's not pristine, there's a lot of long grass and weeds, and it's in a state of disrepair. That's what makes it so fabulous! The battery itself is packed with history, stories and anecdotes. Andy has a...More

It is a pleasant walk from the parking area along Stromness Mouth. You have a splendid view of Graemsay and the high mountains of Hoy. The tide flow through the Mouth is very strong and dramatic.
