Takes 90 mins + to get there. Quite steep to start with but soon levels off.
If you have a campervan you can stay for free at the beach (Rackwick) where there are toilets.

It takes about an hour to walk up to view this astonishing sea stack from the car park.
Allow 30 minutes each way for the drive on single track roads from the ferry at Lyness.
This was definitely one of the highlights of our holiday as the walk up and down was really enjoyable too.

Long wanted to see this. Not disappointed and glad that we made it before any crowds spoiled the photos! Long trek for outfit oldies but we made it unscathed!

A challenging-enough walk from the car park at Rackwick Beach. A bit under 3 miles each way, rough but well-marked path. A few steep bits, mostly at the beginning.

Dogs must be on lead; lots of sheep around.

Old Man itself, and the cliffs, are very impressive. Keep tight hold of dogs and small children…

Fantastic walk from Rackwick which most people should be able to manage. Gorgeous views at the edge of the old man and of the cliffs.

You can see this unique and magnificent structure almost as soon as you leave Scrabster on the ferry, peering over the south westerly cliffs that protect it. There are so many great angles to take pictures from the ferry with ever changing light and mists giving different perspectives.

A lovely walk from Rackwick which goes past several wee local museums that are certainly worth a visit ( they are beside Rackwick Hostel ) The sea cliff views are amazing as is the birdwatching. Keep kids on a short leash ! In season you will drive past the RSPB observation stop for the Sea Eagles that nest there - also amazing.

Personally I would suggest visiting Skye out of the midge and tourist season. We visited in October and it was still busy! I was slightly put off when we arrived by the number of cars and busses in the car park. However the further we walked up, the less people. By the time we got to the top there was just a handful of others. Get there early and enjoy!
