The castle is operated by a charitable local group - the volunteers were incredibly welcoming, informative and helpful. Portencross is a small castle, but in excellent condition thanks to the restoration and if accompanied by a walk of the surrounding area is a lovely half-day activity. Entry is free but we thought it was such a great cause that we donated £10. One thing to note is there are no toilets, but it didn’t impact our enjoyment.

I would fully recommend a stop off at Portencross. There are many walk to the beach on one side and Hunterston on the other. There is a free car park right on the peninsula. Rain sleet, snow or sunshine this spot is breathtakingly beautiful. The castle is open (check dates etc) and the history goes back to the kings of Scotland being laid there until they cross the sea to Iona. Would recommend picnic as no facility for toilets or eateries. Unspoilt beauty

Visited with my 2 kids today, and have to say it was absolutely brilliant. The volunteers do a great job, with plenty of sanitiser available and masks if you don't have one. They both took time to have a chat with me and talk about the castle, the wildlife and the local area. The castle itself is a fantastic find. Really interesting and lots of nice information and displays. The view from the top is fantastic as well, with metal boards showing what all the sites are. Would recommend. It was a highlight of my holiday.
