Disappointment!
Jun 2021
I would love to have visited this museum, bot unfortunately it was closed when I reached it. It was a pity as it was a beautiful day at the beginning of June and quite a number of tourists were about. Perhaps they should reconsider their opening hours during the summer months as it ws very disappointing not to gain entry.

A treasure trove!! Brilliant place for local history, children and adults alike.

I have visited this museum on and off for nearly 15 years. The last visit was with my students from Moray College who were reseaching the contrasts between modern day life and living in the past.

What a fantastic resourse. The volunteers very kindly opened up just after the end of the season on a Monday when they wouldnt be open normally anyway. Loads of hand-on, eclectic and quirky exhibits which include an old school room, a victorian kitchen and shop and a million other fascinating things. Upstairs is a mini transport museum.

Take half n hour or half a lifetime you wont see it all! This stands up against any other museum I have been in anywhere. Do yourself a favour and visit soon. And put a couple of quid in the collection box on the way in!!

Easily a five star rating

Chaotic, quirky, fascinating

This museum is housed in an old church. Essentially it seems to have been put together by enthusiasts rather than professionals, which leads to a fascinating but relatively unstructured experience. For example, among the horse-drawn vehicles upstairs mainly from the 19th century were scattered 20th century artefacts like vintage TVs and a film projector. One display case of dresses from the mid-20th century was drawn from the wardrobe during the first 40 years of marriage of the wife of the man who established the museum. Tableaux to show various scenes involve vintage costumes but they are clothing shopwindow mannequins with hair and 'makeup' in the fashions of the late 20th century. Some of the items were labelled but many were not. There are piles of copies of documents of poor legibility so there is probably a treasure trove of local history but far more than one could take in during a short visit. The focus is local but there are constant exceptions. Folk and heritage are here concepts stretched to breaking point but arguably it's part of the attraction. Probably there is something for everyone here. Enjoy!

Not To Be Missed
Sep 2018
A visit to the museum gives you a fantastic insight into what life was like for the people of Fochabers and surrounding villages. The displays are just brilliant from inside the houses. working conditions, the two wars, and the mode transport used. There's even a classroom...Well worth the visit.

Visited this while in fochabers for the day and glad I found it. Much more to see than what I expected. Was greeted by a really friendly lady who told us all about the rooms and best was to get around. Great to see all the carriages and displays of a school class and pictures. So much more besides to suit all ages and it's free to enter but I couldn't justify not leaving a donation. A must even if you aren't a museum person. Won't be disappointed.

Don't follow my mistake - allocate a lot of time

A lot of hard work has gone into this community project and you need time to wander round it. For those seeking family history connection it is a must. For those wanting a walk down memory lane it is perfect. Lots of items to trigger memories be it small toys or carriages.
Helpful friendly guides are on hand.
Probably no photos from anyone so far (May 2019) as there is just too much to see!

There was so much to see in this wee gem of a local area museum, the volunteers were friendly and chatty, I especially loved all the vintage wedding dresses , many of which had the photos of the brides wearing them, my partner enjoyed all the old carriages and traps upstairs, so interesting...and it's FREE!

there is so much to see here from the history of Fochabers to bygones of the recent past. You could visit on a number of occasions and see different things as even though the premises are not huge there are a great amount of artefacts etc. on show. We particularly enjoyed the fine collection of carriages on show and the exhibition of 70s fashion.
