Fairly impressed with Grand Tour although disappointed that the entrance was a side door instead of the Main House entrance as previously. The guide was very knowledgeable but almost too much to take in, and lack of time to look around. No photographs, even without flash was disappointing, unlike Culzean Castle where no such restrictions are imposed. Cost of £13... More

I am not usually keen on house tours, but (a)it did not take too long (b)the guide was very good The better news is that the estate is open and accessible to all and a good, reasonably priced cafe is available. An acceptable hours drive from the Ayrshire/Glasgow area and a family could enjoy the delights of this estate for... More

Beautifully restored house set in the Ayrshire countryside. The house tour highlighted lovely Chippendale furniture. The estate includes a magnificent walled garden, a maze and plenty of woodland walks. We had lunch in the cafe which was tasty and reasonably priced. Great place to spend the day where you be as active or relaxed as you choose.

Dumfries House offers a stunning view of a Chippendale Palladio style great house, and gardens and external walks that complement the visit. With its community integrated activities it is a pleasing example of leisure and tourism being used not only to please the visitor but also to boost the local economy, a project for which our much criticised Windsor (Charles), should... We've been meaning to visit this place for a while, and it met all our expectations. We took the shorter guided tour of the house (this is the only area which is chargeable), and we were blown away with the quality of the restoration (if you're into Chippendale, apparently there are more pieces here than anywhere else in the world).... The house tour is really interesting and allows one to appreciate the hard work that has gone into restoring and maintaining this stately home. We visited on a very rainy wet day so we were not able to fully appreciate the grounds. It was a bit sad that in the wet we had to stand outside the house in the... More

The tour of the house is well worth it. It's professional and the rooms are beautiful. The front garden area and fountain is well kept, colourful and delightful. The Rothesay garden is a lovely walk by the stream. There are very old trees and plenty of space and seats to enjoy near the house. There is a play area for... More

An absolutely lovely place, that is free to visit unless you want to go in and have a tour of the house itself! Café on the grounds is in the building that used to house the stables, and it has lovely charm, and you can even see the names of the horses that used to live in each stall. The... More
