Welcome to Hunter Surf School! The only surf school located directly on Woolacombe beach. Our team of fully qualified and experienced surf coaches are on hand to ensure you experience the thrill of Surfing & Coasteering in a supportive and safe environment. We cater for all ages and abilities. Awarded with a centre of excellence status by Englands national governing body, Surfing England. All of our Instructors are fully qualified beach lifeguards, and Surfing England certified.

One word : Awesome. We had a private family session booked with with Hunters on Friday 14 August. We were a group of 5, 2 adults and 3 kids aged 9, 7 and 5. None of us had ever tired surfing.
From the moment we arrived, Buckie and team made us feel fell welcome and at home. There was a friendly atmosphere which added to the experience. We were issued wetsuits and given space to change into them, and a locker to store our items whilst we surfed.
We had Olivia as our instructor, and she was outstanding. The kids were engaged and had fun, and she had us in the water in no time having briefed on the beach. We all managed to catch some waves, and the kids took to it like a duck to water. She had them confident and on their feet on the boards in no time. Hats off to her!
We also had photos taken by George, and we loved them so much, we bought them all! Lasting memory of a truly great day out.
When we booked, we were apprehensive that 2 hours would be too long and the kids would get bored, but nothing was further from the truth. It was a blast from start to finish, and we would highly recommend anyone in the area to give it a go! Come rain or shine, don't worry, you will have a blast!

Not only did Enrique stay true to his word and provide an amazing 2 hour break in atrocious weather ( not quite sure how you did that 😊) he managed to get all 8 of our party of complete novices standing on the board in no time at all. Loved the session, great teacher. Many thanks from Conway family 🙂

We had planned a surfing week but sadly weather conditions brought an unusually calm sea. The Hunter team were very accommodating and adjusted our sessions as a result, refunding us and offered us paddle boards another day. No quibbles about refunding.
All equipment was excellent, lovely brand new wetsuits and the shop was right at the entrance to the beach so not far to walk down to the sea with boards. They had a photographer who took Lots of lovely photos (additional cost) which are a good memory of a lovely day.
I can’t compare instruction with the other main surf school WSC although they are not based on the beach and my enquiries prior to booking would suggest they might not have been so accommodating. I think both offer photos of the session.
A shame we didn’t manage to catch some big waves for our teenage children who seemed to find surfing a doddle compared to us oldies.

Hello Buckie & the team
I just want to say a big thank you for looking after us this weekend. The boys had the best time messing around on the beach and having a go at surfing and I think the better weather on Sunday made it fun for them jumping around in the waves.
It was a shame we couldn't spend much time in the water on Saturday but the storm made for exciting times and we are after all, Challenge Adventure Group! You bent over backwards to make Saturday work for us despite the storm by lending us the body boards and allowing us to get into our wetsuits early and we really appreciate your thoughtfulness, kindness and flexibility.
The Hunter team were wonderful and so friendly, cheerful, helpful and professional and they all helped each and every one of us get the best out of our experience. We all went home feeling like we were surfing gods / godesses with tales of sun, sea and sand to tell.
Thanks again for making our weekend one to remember 🏄☺
Maybe we'll see you later in the year but if not, see you in 2023!

Friendly, professional staff. Jaz took my two grandchildren in the water for a surfing lesson, and gave them a super session although both were different abilities. Would definitely book again. Also very helpful when we went back to purchase a winter weight wet suit.

A great surf shop with lovely staff who made us feel welcome from the very start. Bucky even managed to find a wet suit that fit my limber 6ft 4 inch frame.
Our surf instructor Jazz (which we later found out was short for Jasmine) was brilliant. She was informative and patient with us and managed to encourage nearly everyone into catching a wave. She was kind and caring with the one member of the group who failed to get up on his feet and allowed him to baptise himself in the waters of Poseidon.
In my eyes as a surf instructor Jazz is second to no one, not even the great Jazzy Jeff.
The group also felt the after care service we received when we arrived back at the shop was fantastic.
I’d throughly recommend using the shop for all your water sporting needs. The sausage rolls opposite the shop are also bangers, pun intended.

We didn’t have a great experience here when we hired equipment. The staff weren’t friendly at all - they seemed annoyed we’d disturbed them and wouldn’t let us use the changing rooms even though the shop was deserted. They also insisted we wash every bit of sand off our boards which is quite tricky on a beach and wasn’t mentioned before we paid… I think they rely on the convenience of the location and don’t need to bother with customer service. Equipment was fine quality and seemed to be a comparable cost to other places but we had a much better experience with the staff at woolacombe surf centre.

Hi Cat,
We are sorry you didn't have an enjoyable experience hiring from us. The reason we cannot let hire customers use our changing rooms is because our insurance only covers us for surf school customers and retail customers.
Additionally, as we let you know on the day we had a surf lesson returning shortly after you hired and they are given sole use of the changing rooms during their time at our surf school.
We're sorry you found rinsing the boards off tricky - our location lends itself to people being able to easily rinse both themselves and our equipment as the showers are opposite our shop entrance! So we just ask that people rinse themselves and their equipment to stop our shop getting covered in sand.
Please note for future reference we have a separate Tripadvisor and google reviews page for hire centre reviews this Tripadvisor is for our Surf School.
We don't like to think that anyone would have a bad experience with our service at Hunter so please give us a call on 07974928231 if you would like to discuss this further.

We had a family surf lesson and cannot wait to go back again!
The instructor was equally engaging with my children 9yrs & 10 yrs who were immediately better than my wife and I. The children were having so much fun whilst the patient instructor carefully took us through the theory and guess what: BY THE END OF THE LESSON WE WERE ALL STANDING!
The team at Hunter are good fun, caring and professional. We will be back and we will be telling all our friends to do so too.
Thank you team and keep up the great work.

Had a brilliant family private lesson with Enrique. It was great fun. All of us were novices, but Enrique made it a fun and enjoyable experience.
At a 40 something I was proud to get up and surf on my knees. All of kids throughly enjoyed the experience and now have a love of surfing. Following our lesson, they returned to hire boards and wetsuits to practice.
The photos captured were simply amazing and a great momento for us to treasure.
Would highly recommend, great friendly staff.
If we return to Woolacombe, we will be sure to be back. Thank you.

You just can’t beat what Buckie and his amazing team at Hunter Surf offer. Every year they absolutely make our holiday. The best lessons with Keeks, fantastic photos from Drew and above all a fantastic welcome from Buckie, Jade, Reuben, Issie, Arnie, Ollie, Olivia not forgetting Lilly. Nothing is too much whether it’s helping Sammy nail catching the ‘green’ or helping Wills stand up and surf or even little old me trying to just catch a wave or two! If you’re going to Woolie be sure to go and see them and they’ll help you achieve your surf dream whatever it might be.
