About
The Grand Western Canal Country Park meanders through 11 1/4 miles of beautiful mid-Devon countryside between Tiverton and Lowdwells (near the Somerset border). Declared a Country Park in 1971 and a Local Nature Reserve in 2005, the canal is a wonderfully relaxing place for a peaceful walk or cycle ride along the towpath, or even take a ride onboard the much-loved horse-drawn barge that has been taking passengers for trips along the canal since 1974. The abundance of wildlife and scenic landscape that characterise the Canal today make it a great place to enjoy walking, cycling, boating, fishing and picnics.

Pay and display car park signposted from nearby roads, but plenty of free parking in surrounding residential streets. Got parked straight away in a nearby road, even on a Sunday when everybody is out, and the main car park looked full.

Lovely walk alongside the canal. Flat wheelchair/pushchair friendly surface to walk on. Plenty of opportunities to join/leave the path to/from neighbouring streets. Information boards scattered along the path at various points of interest. Various benches and seats along the path to take a breather.

The section we walked (from Tiverton to the railway acqeduct) only had a towpath on one side. Not sure if this is the case along the whole canal. No cafes or pubs along this section, in case you fancy a swift half!

For dog owners, note during the summer months horses may be found along the tow path working barges. At various points, such as bridges, the path is very narrow and apparently, the horses cannot stop!

Overall, a very pleasant 2 hours spent

Beautiful secluded canal with tow path running beside it for its 11 mile length.

Super for walkers, runners, cyclists (dismount please when approaching bridges to avoid cycling into walkers!).

Great birdlife, including sighting kingfishers on several occasions just before dusk.

Pubs in route too, many benches, and great views.

Love walking and cycling along here, have done the full length, in different various stages now, a very photogenic area, with lots of history, which is all very well explained on each of the well placed boards along the tow path, my favourite parts are around the Manley and East Manly area, so peaceful, and colourful in the spring to Autumn, yet still holds it's natural beauty and splendour too in Winter. An amazing array of wildlife along the trail, if you're very lucky, this will include Kingfishers too. A couple of good eateries along the way, one at The Basin end in Tiverton, the other at the farm shop in Halberton, also a fabulous pub along there at Sampford Peverell 'The Globe Inn, which also has B&B option if you're planning to stay longer.

Thoroughly enjoyed a walk along the Grand Western Canal in Tiverton, on a beautiful sunny September day. Sadly the horse drawn barge wasn't in operation, but it was good to visit anyway. Some lovely properties back on to the water, and the fishing looks to be reasonably priced.

Beautiful canal running over 11 miles. Perfect for walks, cycling, running or even paddle boarding.

As you gradually walk away from Tiverton, the tow path becomes quieter and more the scenery is stunning. Views change with the light and time of day, and by season to season.

Kingfishers can be seen, swans, ducks and geese.

Highly recommended.

On holidays nearby and found this on google so thought a nice day out. It was ok but cut short as half of it wasn’t open (Covid) also says dogs must be on a lead but most of the dogs were running around with owners not really keeping them in check! My dog doesn’t like other dogs and doesn’t want them coming up in her face. As a result she snapped at one that did this and was the slagged of for being vicious! Really our fault. No. So be careful as the a lot of selfish (my dogs
Goody too shoes) walkers there.

Wanted a walk to exercise the dogs. Walked from the end of the canal to the aqueduct 2.5 miles away and and back, 5 miles in total.
Main car park full bit found a space in the next road up for free.
No pubs or cafe along this stretch of the canal. you can only walk on one side of the canal as houses the other side but nice to see a variety of back gardens along our walk.
Horse drawn canal boat rides are available so I imagine it can be stressful for dog and horse owners when this is operating.
Didn’t see any toilets a long the route apart from a block in the main car park.
Lots of places to stop to picnic or just enjoy the view.

Beautiful place. We had a little wander with lots of sit downs on the regularly spaced benched. Others were doing much longer walks or kayaking on the canal. Lovely children’s playground. Accessible by slope or steps.

Been on my bucket list for a while to walk this for a while now. Over 2 days, so far, I have now covered the first 5 - 6 miles, so about half way. Intend to do the Northern section very soon. All flat terrain, so nothing strenuous which was just as well, as we had very hot weather over those 2 days, so took it slow, plenty of stops for photo's and refreshments. Plenty of wildlife to keep you interested, and a few barges were now moving post lock-down, which added to the entertainment. Well recommended, shame the cyclists couldn't follow the simple instructions to dismount when going under the tunnels, not one of the many I saw got off their bikes, guess that's the me me me society 40 years of Thatcherism has created sadly. So just as well the horse drawn barge was still not running then.

There are many pets without leash. The information center is closed. It is full of menacing pets. Not good for youngsters.
