About
The Grand Western Canal Country Park meanders through 11 1/4 miles of beautiful mid-Devon countryside between Tiverton and Lowdwells (near the Somerset border). Declared a Country Park in 1971 and a Local Nature Reserve in 2005, the canal is a wonderfully relaxing place for a peaceful walk or cycle ride along the towpath, or even take a ride onboard the much-loved horse-drawn barge that has been taking passengers for trips along the canal since 1974. The abundance of wildlife and scenic landscape that characterise the Canal today make it a great place to enjoy walking, cycling, boating, fishing and picnics.

Pleasant walk along a short stretch of canal, can be easily accessed for those staying nearby so no need to drive and pay for parking. Most popular attraction was the nearby cafe.

Love walking and cycling along here, have done the full length, in different various stages now, a very photogenic area, with lots of history, which is all very well explained on each of the well placed boards along the tow path, my favourite parts are around the Manley and East Manly area, so peaceful, and colourful in the spring to Autumn, yet still holds it's natural beauty and splendour too in Winter. An amazing array of wildlife along the trail, if you're very lucky, this will include Kingfishers too. A couple of good eateries along the way, one at The Basin end in Tiverton, the other at the farm shop in Halberton, also a fabulous pub along there at Sampford Peverell 'The Globe Inn, which also has B&B option if you're planning to stay longer.

Great walk along the canal towpath, fantastic to see the horse drawn barge too! The surrounding tea rooms are always a good bet and very accessible from Tiverton Town centre.

Lovely place to take a long or short walk. Always see kingfishers on the canal here so walk slowly and watch for the flash of blue.

Beautiful canal running over 11 miles. Perfect for walks, cycling, running or even paddle boarding.
As you gradually walk away from Tiverton, the tow path becomes quieter and more the scenery is stunning. Views change with the light and time of day, and by season to season.
Kingfishers can be seen, swans, ducks and geese.
Highly recommended.

There are many pets without leash. The information center is closed. It is full of menacing pets. Not good for youngsters.

Thinking about a tour that includes the horse drawn boat trip on the Grand Western Canal. Question for those who have been on this attraction: Is boarding and alighting safely suitable for a disabled person? (not wheelchair-bound however - just cognitively impaired)

Is it open all year and do you have to book the barge trip in advance?
GrandWesternCanal
Tiverton, UK
Hi Karen,
The Grand Western Canal Country Park is open all day everyday. The Tiverton Canal Co who run the horsedrawn barge trips operate from Easter to late October every year. Booking isn't essential for all trips, but I would recommend giving them a call to check when they are running trips. Tripdavisor wont let me post other organisations contact details but you should be able to find them quickly on a seach engine...
Regards

How much does a ride cost ?
GrandWesternCanal
Tiverton, UK
The horsedrawn barge is operated by the Tiverton Canal Co. More information about their trips and prices can be found on their website. Unfortunately Tripadvisor does not allow me to put website links or addresses into these responses, but if you search for Tiverton Canal Co on Google you should quickly find the website.
Kind regards
Canal Ranger Service.
