We went to Tapeley with no expectations - as visitors from "up north" Tapeley was on our list of places to visit based on web searches. There was a pleasant informality and the reception lady, tearoom lady and head gardener were friendly and chatty. We enjoyed the formal gardens and would like to see them in full bloom in the height of summer - the structures are delightful, and it is obvious that the herbaceous borders are well-designed and planted. The highland cattle were charming, the kitchen garden was obviously well-used and cultivated, and we enjoyed meeting a very well-built pig! The permaculture garden gave us food for thought ( pardon the pun ). Perhaps not to everyone's taste, but do visit with an enquiring and open mind. Oh, and we used our Gardeners World 2 for 1 card, so it only cost us £3 each - superb value, and the organic cakes in the tearoom were delicious too.

We went with expectations. The whole place shows a distinct lack of TLC. The best items were the painted wooden signs. The Italian Gardens are not Italian. The kitchen garden is nice but poorly stocked. Overall impression is that the grounds are not well maintained. Sorry, Mr Christie, but it was overall a let-down.

Thanks for your review. Sorry it wasn't to your liking. Just to follow up on a couple of your points: The Italian gardens. One of key points of Italian styled gardens designed in the Arts And Crafts movement of the late 1800’s was symmetry and structure, the division of the gardens to layers and rooms. hence terraces and divided bays, the use of yews, topiary and high hedges, balanced steps and statues. The poorly stocked kitchen garden. There are over 40 types of fruit and veg being organically grown in the garden, all of which is used in the main house and tea rooms. Any excess is sold cheaply to some local pubs and the public in our small shop.

Beautiful laid back gardens, friendly staff and amazing tea room. Perfect for a lazy afternoon out. Don’t miss the permaculture gardens or the lemon cake...

You need to be inquisitive, there are lots of paths to follow and gateways to try. A very relaxed and comfortable place. Make the effort to walk to the Monument and you'll be rewarded with the view. Similarly walk down through the woods to the lake and rest a while on one of these benches. Take in the birdsong and the dragonflies. Explore the permaculture garden and the walled garden. There are other things to find too - I won't spoil all of the surprises. Oh - there's a cafe too, try the cakes.
