Plenty to see here.
Nov 2021
My visit was midweek early November so the museum was not very busy. The friendly staff told me a bit about the museum before I set off to explore.
I was particularly interested in the Roman history information, and about mining on Dartmoor. I liked the railway section, and the additional railway display in the exhibition room - appropriately I had arrived in town on the newly introduced train service from Exeter. I also liked the carts, vehicles and machinery on the ground floor.
The museum is well laid out, with informative captions to the displays. My visit lasted over 2 and a half hours, including browsing the small shop where there is a selection of books about local subjects.

A nice little surprise ticked off the main street. Would recommend it passing through Okehampton. The staff and curators were very friendly too and offered some local knowledge.

Lovely little museum
Sep 2021 • Couples
Lovely little museum spread over three floors and covering a wide range of history and exhibits. Friendly and engaging staff. When we went there was an amazing display of artwork by children from a local primary school. Allow 1 to 2 hours depending on how much of the written information you want to read.

Don’t miss this museum

The many interesting exhibits in this museum take the visitor on a journey from prehistoric times to the present day, all with a local flavour. The museum building itself is interesting, and I was impressed with the activities arranged for children throughout the museum. The very professional volunteer staff were extremely helpful, explaining some of the exhibits, and providing useful information for my sightseeing in the local area. Well worth the price of entry. Highly recommended.

Day out
Jul 2019 • Family
On holiday in Jacobstow with a couple of grandchildren, we thought the museum was really good, lot's to do with the children,7 year old Lorelei loved looking for the piskies, plus fairy doors, letter boxes where great for keeping 3 year old Logan happy, though his hands did get more stamps than his paper, the ladies who man the museum are so friendly, they took time to chat to the grandchildren making us all feel welcome, well worth a visit

Interesting little place

Was quiet when we visited so that was good. Only a small place and not expensive to look round. One of the residents near there let us park in her space which was very kind as she was going out. 3 floors to look at and there was an exhibition on which to be fair was just a few bits to see.

Thank you, yes we are small but surprisingly have a lot to see! The Museum does have parking spaces and if you park in the outer section, a volunteer will let you park in our spaces. We cannot leave the access open unfortunately as people who are not visiting the museum park there to go shopping! Was it our Roman exhibition you commented on? or the Iron Age one which is on loan from Plymouth Museum. Both are fascinating as they tell us more about the ancient history of this area. We can only show what we are loaned sadly.

Well worth a visit

This museum is quite small in size, but big on content and information. Do not expect a huge display, never the less it is a fascinating place to spend an hour. There is a lot of interesting information about things specifically Dartmoor related. Good collection of old farming tools. It helps you interpret Dartmoor better. When we visited our ticket (if retained) entitled us to further visits. If you have limited mobility be aware it is on three floors. No refreshments on site but there is a cafe next door and outside seating in the courtyard if the weather is good..

A Little Gem
Sep 2018 • Couples
A small museum in Okehampton. However it is full of interesting information and artefacts about life in Dartmoor through the ages. The exhibits are spread over 3 floors. So you start at the top and work your way down. There is plenty for children to do and would be good on a rainy day. The volunteers were friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit. A small but nice gift shop.
