Overview

The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

On holiday for a week with my wife. I'm a rail enthusiast - she is definitely not but agreed we could visit a railway in the area as part of our holiday. With the above in mind I was conscious that taking an entire day...More

We had a fantastic family day out - age ranges from 3 years old to 83 years. For two of the older generation it was a thoroughly enjoyed nostalgic visit. Good value for money, lovely scenic ride.

This lovely old fashioned railway is a lovely trip in a proper train. The carriages remind me of a Harry Potter scene on the Hogarth express. The conductor even gave my little boy a Thomas the Tank engine flag to wave. The train meanders through...More

We travelled from Buckfastleigh to Totnes on Sunday. Fantastic little stations on the line. It's not cheap at £15 per adult but you're having a day out on your holiday or long weekend, so it could be worse. There are drinks available to buy on...More

Not sure about play area but there is the butterfly and otter centre next to the Buckfastleigh Station or the rare breeds centre next to Totnes Station. Children and adults alike will be delighted by either of these.
