Staff have upped their game, a great visit!
The staff have obviously upped their game. Everyone in the cafe was charming and helpful and the food was delicious. There is so much to intrigue youngsters, from glass blowing, animatronic animals, and of course, wonderful marble runs. A great visit.

    Unusual one to visit
Free entry, lovely collection of glass and marbles, glassworks workshop in display, history of marbles and displays were impressive. Warning - though entry is free, you are guaranteed to walk out with quite a few stuff . Little crowded due to holiday, especially the queue for the restaurant

    Great fun glassmaking. Good food
Booked a session to make sparkling birds. Kelsie was an entertaining and patient teacher. Had a great experience learning to shape glass. Can’t wait to see the final product once it is cooled. Booked lunch in the cafe and staff were attentive and helpful.

Inspiring day out and very dog friendly
Friends recommended this place to us and we thought they were winding us up so we went along for a laugh on a rainy day. Well, what a surprisingly fantastic time we had! Such a great place and FREE entry! Plus we could take the dog! The highlight was definitely the glass making workshop where we sat watching them make a vase for over an hour - mesmerising in its skill and beauty. Then spent a fortune in the shop. Lovely cafe too. Can’t wait to go back.
Hello, thank you for taking the time to comment! Yes, it is so mesmerising watching the glass being made. You can have a go yourself and book a course. The 'waves' are a great one to try! Do come back again.

    Absolutely amazing experience.
Had a glass making experience today, bought for me for my birthday. Absolutely amazing experience. I was privileged to have Imogen and Jenny as my tutors. They made me feel relaxed and talked me through all the stages of producing my Wave.
Hello, we are so pleased to hear that you had a good experience and enjoyed your glassmaking course. Imogen and Jenny as great, we will pass on your feedback to them. I hope the wave has pride of place somewhere. All the best and hopefully, see you again soon.

Much bigger than expected and the restaurant is very good
This was much bigger than expected. The shop is massive and has a large selection of items, not just marble related. The rest of the rooms are interesting as well and the marble runs, particularly the large one with the pool balls, is really clever and engrossing. The games garden was a little disappointing but it is free so can't really complain. We ate in the restaurant and had savoury/cream tea with a couple of cakes. The food was very nice and there was plenty of it. We would definitely visit again.
Hi, thank you for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your visit. Yes, our afternoon tea is something we pride ourselves on. Come back and see us again.

Helpful staff, enjoyed cream tea and glass making
My husband is disabled and it was not a planned visit. A member of staff quickly found us a wheelchair to use, very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed a great cream tea in the conservatory, with good and again friendly service. My visiting family really enjoyed seeing the glass blowing (bought a little duck) and viewing the marble runs.

A wonderful traditional place to visit
We visited here especially to purchase a keepsake for our dearly departed pet ( if we could find something suitable). This we did and ordered a beautiful glass heart assisted by a lovely sympathetic lady and came away happy that we found something as lovely as we did. There's plenty on offer here at the H.O.M . from traditional board games to unique remote controlled miniature helicopters to the making of beautiful glassware and a small museum and cafe.

I came across this looking through trip advisor. It wasn’t a great weather day so me and 1 of my sons headed off to check it out. We arrived & had a quick look at the amazing ball run upstairs. Then headed for breakfast before it got too busy. Breakfast was so good we booked back in for the next day! We looked around the glass making room (stunning glasswork for sale) & watched them while making something! Had a look around the museum and found the penny press. Then the shop where marble purchases were had.
Restaurant - only had breakfast here but was delish! Very clean, all masked or visored up. Very polite & helpful. Price wise for 2nd day for family of 5 we paid half price due to government incentive so £22 (Would have been £44 otherwise). That was 5 breakfasts and 3 extra orange juices.
Toilets on site
Play area although heard something play things removed due to covid still lovely climbing frame
Museum is small but really interesting and make sure you have your £1 & 1p for the penny press.
On the wet day we arrived around 9.30 and was not too busy but when we left around 10:40 was rammed
Non wet day got there for 9am (booked table time) and left at 10:30. Wasn’t as busy as still car park spaces in main car park. So if it’s wet get there first thing and aim to be out of there by 10:30!

Fascinating to see the very skilled glass blowing and the marble runs are fun. Be careful when buying marbles though, I had the feeling that the lady was making it up when she silently counted out what I was buying and came to a very different total to what I’d already added up. I did query but she just smiled in a condescending way. I then checked the receipt carefully and right enough, she had over-charged me by £11! It was refunded to my card when I challenged the price a second time.

A wonderful visit to The H of M while holidaying in Lyme Regis (an hour away). I came with my dog and received a wonderful welcome (despite the fact we were damp from the carpark dash in the torrential rain). All the staff, in all areas were really friendly and helpful. At first glance I thought the place was just a large, glorified gift shop (despite my parents having recommended I visit). Oh, but it is is so much more than that. The museum displays are fascinating, the marble runs were captivating, the café was marvellous and in my view, great value for money and veggie-friendly (I can thoroughly recommend the takeaway picnic box), and as for the shop, that was excellent, I did plenty of early Christmas shopping. It was a wet and miserable day outside, but we managed to while away a good few hours. Thanks to all the staff and also lots of friendly customers I chatted to on that day too.
As for COVID compliance, everything seemed fine to me, but it was a quiet day. Loos were exceptionally clean.

Having read the other reviews we expected much more of this. The marble runs on display and we’re amazing you could spend ages watching them. Had hoped to have been able to purchase something similar but what they did have for-sale was expensive and over priced for what it is.
Cream tea in the restaurant was great and safe very friendly and helpful.

Dear Sherlock Thank you for your feedback - it is important to us. I am delighted to hear you enjoyed the marble runs & cream tea. We stock a huge range of products in our shop, with many items at reduced prices & of course lots of marbles, with prices starting from as little as 5p - I am very sorry that you could not find what you wanted at a price to suit you.

We normally really enjoy visiting the House of Marbles however today left us disappointed. COVID compliance is very poor. We felt unsafe. There was far too many people in the building, no social distancing and no observing the one way system. At the very least the House of Marbles needs a booking system or someone at the door limiting numbers. I will not be visiting again until COVID has gone!

Hello Thank you for posting your feedback - it is important to us. We are genuinely very sorry that you did not enjoy your visit here. In order to ensure that we are doing our best to keep everyone safe we have worked with and acted on the advice of our local Environmental Health Officer to further improve on the systems we already have set in place & to regulate the number of visitors on site & she is satisfied with what we have done. We have worked hard to ensure that we comply with government guidelines & regulations including carrying out risk assessments, installing hand sanitiser stations, setting up one way systems, using enhanced cleaning regimes, putting up signs, adding screens around counters etcetera. Whilst we are still working on skeleton staff we simply do not have the capacity to employ someone on the door or to take bookings (particularly as we do not charge entrance fees). On busy days we put a large and very clear sign outside our doors asking customers not to enter until another one leaves - whilst the majority observe this & follow social distancing guidelines - unfortunately not everyone does. We hope that you and your family stay safe.

We visited here as we had heard some good things about it. We weren't expecting much and to be honest it was fairly good. Some of the items were extremely over priced but the children enjoyed the shop and the lady looking after the clothes upstairs was very friendly. My only criticism...is that we went to watch the glass blowing. Two of the men were preparing the area but then instead of communicating to everyone stood waiting they just walked to the bench at the back of the workshop and began eating their lunch! We stood there waiting for 40 minutes until a member of staff actually spoke to everyone waiting and informed us it would be another 20 minutes. During this time at no point did even the lady in charge of the glass shop bother to approach us. Not good customer service. In future if I wished to purchase I would go elsewhere. I don't mind waiting as long as I'm spoken to. Not good for people with back issues and young children.

Dear Patty Thank you for taking the time to post a review & your kind comments. Our glassworks is a working factory & what you see will depend on what production orders we have & the day's schedule. We do not charge any entrance fees and visitors are more than welcome to watch our glassmakers at work, but there may be times when they have a lunch or coffee break. Normally the staff put a sign on the counter to say that they are at lunch & would advise you accordingly - it is most unusual for this to happen & I can only sincerely apologise on their behalf.

We have often visited the House of Marbles, especially when our son was much younger- there are lots of things to keep young kids amused for hours. This time we were on a walk from Kingsteignton to Bovey and thought it would be good to have a light lunch.

The restaurant really hasn’t changed in all the time we’ve been visiting. The staff were ok although not particularly friendly or welcoming but the food was very good- simple but well prepared, although we had to wait an inordinately long time for my wife’s sandwich - 45 minutes or so. We eventually received it when we asked what the delay might be.

Still pretty good but perhaps a little staff training might not go amiss.

There is much to delight here, not least the marble runs, the intimate museum exhibits, the glass making viewing and the welcome and enthusiasm of staff. The cafe is very good and all of this is free. But two things. Firstly the Covid protection is poor; there were too many people in this small space at one time. They must have booked or staggered entry. Secondly the shop is an odd mixture of quality and "fart joke" tat.
I am far from prudish but my six year old grandson did ask me what "I would rather have a sh*g" on a prominently displayed mug meant. You don't need this. Paignton seafront, yes. Here, no!

This was the second time we had been to the House of Marbles and as always the exhibits and facilities are brilliant.
We were hoping for a cream tea in the restaurant but the wait was over an hour, we hadn’t booked so we decided to go elsewhere which was fine.
However the Covid compliance at this facility is terrible. It was a complete free for all. No one monitoring numbers coming in and no way of booking a visit. The place was heaving. No one was observing the social distancing signs or floor markers indicating a one way system. No one waiting for people to walk downstairs before going up. Everyone was crowding around the exhibits because there was little space to go.
It all felt very unsafe so we didn’t stay. I wouldn’t go back again until a limit is placed on the amount of people allowed to enter at one time like most other places we have visited. This way there would be more space to allow for adequate social distancing. Unfortunately it simply cannot be left to the public to to do the right thing because people Simply do not.

A great find when looking for something to do on a rainy afternoon. We decided to head to House of Marbles not knowing what to expect. We weren’t disappointed. There is ample free parking and the attraction is also free to enter. Inside there are many marble related artefacts to view and there are live demonstrations of glass blowing and glass sculpture making. There are also some impressively mesmerising marble runs to watch. The staff are very friendly and attentive. There’s a play area for small children which on a drier day would have been great. We had cream teas in the cafe and I can honestly say these were the best we’ve had so far whilst on holiday. My family really enjoyed visiting and would definitely recommend this as a place to go for anyone of any age.
