First of all, I recommend you check whether the antiques shops are open before you visit. All are closed on Sunday and many are closed early in the week. We visited on a Friday. There are around 6 or 7 antique shops in Ashburton. Some are more upmarket and specialise in larger items. Many of the owners are friendly and helpful. We made a few purchases while we were there. HOWEVER the gentleman running Denis Perry Antiques is very rude. Baring in mind we travelled from Bristol and waited patiently in the rain to enter the shop we expected to at least be welcomed. Instead we were told on entry that ‘don’t be long, this isn’t a museum’ and that he is here to sell. I understand that coronavirus has hit many businesses hard and selling is top priority. However there is never any need to be rude. I have many wealthy clients and place items in their homes. I could have invested but instead decided to leave.

There are many antique shops in Ashburton all within reasonable distance of each other. Ashburton is a pleasant little town and if you appreciate antiques this is well worth a visit. Notably, if you are searching for a particular item, vendors will refer you to another vendor in the town who would specialise in a particular item.

We've been visiting The West Country for over 50 years and staying in Ashburton area for over 30..buying Antiques at every opportunity..More recently for a month & more twice a year..It has always been a wonderful source and more recently two more 'Emporia' have joined the dealers..'IN A NUTSHELL' and Denis Perry...both are valuable additions to the established outlets...now with an 'ANTIQUES TRAIL'..if you haven't visited Ashburton, you're missing a treat!

If you love antiques, eating out and don't want to walk miles, then Ashburton is the place to visit. I counted 11 antique shops and 8 cafe's too....what more could anyone want. I've bought quite a few items from Ashburton for our home and some vintage clothing too. If you live in Devon or down on holiday then it's well worth a visit.
