About
Guernsey Museum at Candie is a small, award-winning museum set in beautiful public gardens in St. Peter Port. We have a permanent exhibition of the early history of Guernsey and artworks from the museum collection. Our three other galleries house varied, non-permanent exhibits and displays (please see our website or Facebook page for up-to-date information). Our gift shop is well stocked with local gifts and souvenirs, locally produced art, cards, toys and confectionary. We also sell a large selection of local books both fiction and non-fiction. We have a café on site serving meals, snacks and drinks and a dedicated space for young visitors called the Discovery Room.

The museum is housed in a modern building which is on the site of an old theatre. It is divided into sections with displays of local art, archaeology, witchcraft, local language, etc.
All very well done. I do think that public museums should be free but I don't think that is how they do things in the Channel Islands.

Loved this museum! They’ve packed so much history and culture into a relatively small space in such an engaging way that’s interesting for both adults and children.
I especially loved the folklore section and how well that was done with all the interactive elements.
The brilliant photography exhibition is also well worth a visit, as is the café

It's a small museum (by the standards of British Museum or Louvre) but I enjoyed the visit and the collections of artefacts (from Iron age, Bronze age, Vikings period, Romans period etc.) and there're a lot of informative items available about the collectors and some folk superstitions of Guernsey. I am sure that it will be a good place for school children to learn history. The art gallery was nice too with a mix of old and modern art! The cafe is great too with a view of the Victor Hugo Garden and the staff were very friendly!

Not suitable for adults and very little to see or grab the interest. Overpriced for what was on offer. It was a rainy day but could have done without some children running riot, not the museum's fault but certainly spoiled the enjoyment for others.

We're very sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit. We currently have a special touring exhibition 'Viking Heroes' which is very child friendly along with our permanent galleries displaying local art and history, so we do try to cater for everyone. Rainy days do tend to be busy days.

Have been to a number of their exhibitions of the years - their last one was on Japan and I went twice and would go again but they will have something new this next season, it was so good, it was excellent. A useful museum to get the feel of Guernsey. A little known fact, if you ask at reception (very helpful staff) they will give you the Key to Victoria Tower (nearby), and with key in hand you can go in, lock the door behind you and climb it. Short of going to the Guernsey Aero Club and doing one of their flights around the Island this is the next best aerial view you can get (take a map with you so you can ID the view). Plus you can collapse in Cafe Victoria at the museum afterwards, as you try and remember was it about 186 steps to the top or 9000! Personally I always go for carrot cake.

We love reviews like this! Thank you for such positive words about our museum and I hope you come again to our next exhibition. I'm sure they will have more carrot cake in the café!

Went to have a cup of coffee in museum cafe during my visit. Service was awful - I queued for 15 minutes just to get my coffee. There only seemed to be 2 people working - one in kitchen and one in servery. Chap in kitchen had to come out and clear tables. Woman on servery was taking orders and money but also making coffees, milk shakes etc, which was why it was so slow. Customer in front of me wanted 2 dairy free milk shakes but staff said they only had enough soya milk for one, and this was before lunchtime! I visited during half-term week, and you would have thought they would have anticipated this and increased the staffing. I complained to staff on museum reception who said cafe was franchised out.

I'm sorry you had such a disappointing visit to the café last week. We were even busier than we had expected at the museum, our highest number of visitors in Half Term for many years but you are quite right that it should have been anticipated and more staff provided. We do take these things seriously and appreciate you taking the time to raise the issue with us and will pass your comments on to the company who runs the café. I hope you still enjoyed your visit to the museum and will come again.

Worth the £6 a head to visit. All on one floor in different history sections from 10000 years BC to the present day. Great maps, graphics and inter active displays. Something of the folklore of the island included. We saw the annual photograph exhibition which was STUNNING. Well worth visiting. There’s a café ad well if you want a coffee and a good 🏬 shop!

This place was bigger than I expected it to be, and with more to see - history, some ancient stuff, a bit of culture and some interesting folklore tales, ghosts, witches and fairies etc.
I did not bother with the art.
There are decent toilets and a gift shop.

We were walking around Guernsey and found this wonderful little coffee shop at the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery. Wonderful latte's, beer and light food. Well worth the climb from the port.
