Fascinating place. Victor Hugo lived here and the house is preserved in his honour. The tour guides are really interesting and as well as describing the house they really give a flavour of his life and times. The house is really interestingly decorated, by Hugo,...More

The home is amazing and serves as a window into the mind of a literary master, a complicated, compassionate, awe-inspiring individual who was committed to the poor, the working class, to democracy - to France. Visiting his home was one of the highlights of my...More

Fascinating glimpse into the life of Victor Hugo, a man whose name is familiar to most but one has no idea of the true extent of his genius. This property, decorated according to his personal hightly eccentric taste is a real must. It really is...More

A really fascinating home of Victor Hugo. The lovely guide brings it to life and you really feel the author might materialise at any moment in an historical hologram. In interior design terms it is amazing, with unusual decoration and textures everywhere you look. He...More

This place is absolutely fascinating, I have visited many times over the years...it would be a shame to visit Guernsey and not pay a visit to Victor Hugo's time capsule!

I found the tour of Hauteville House absolutely fascinating and was quite mesmerised by the house. It was Victor Hugo's home for the 15 years he was exiled from Paris, and it is believed that he wrote Les Miserables while living here. The house (as...More

Sadly closed during our trip to Guernsey this week (we knew this in advance, so weren't disappointed upon arrival!) but I'm a PhD student writing about Les Misérables, so we couldn't not stop by. There's lots of parking right outside and I'm very excited about...More

Amazing place but utterly impractical as a house. VH was clearly making an exhibition of it and probably spent most of his time with his mistress who lived a few doors down. (My guess!)

My wife is a huge Victor Hugo fan, and we were supposed to be in Paris the day our ship was diverted to this island. So, we decided this was our number one stop. I am so glad that we went. I did not know...More

The garden is accessible and very pleasant. The house has rather rickety old stairs. They may let yo look in the dining room on the ground floor.
