Had a fantastic trek with Cleggan beach riding Centre to Omey Island with lots of cantering on the beach. Had an amazing horse, I am experienced and loved the fact that the horse was alert and fun yet gentle. Lovely guide, a delightful trip altogether. Owner also did a quick assessment of my ability before we took off and made sure I was aware of the safety aspect of the trek.

Myself and my 2 kids (14 and 11) went for a 90 minute ride at the Cleggan Riding Centre during a brief visit to the area. Helmets and boots are provided when you get there. 3 horses were selected for our use and we were shown the basics before we headed off for the beach. Even though we were total beginners, the 2 girls who accompanied us were confident that we could handle our steeds. We even managed a few trots on our way to the beach through some narrow lanes. One incident to report - there were some loose horses when we got down to the beach who had to be corralled as they were antagonizing our horses. And unfortunately, I got a bit too brave in trying to get my horse to trot along the beach - he hit a soft spot on the sand and I went flying! Luckily, I hit the ground rump-first and I wasn't badly hurt, just a bit shaken. I got back in the saddle straight away, offering assurances to out instructors that I was fine. Overall, we really enjoyed our ride (although my son got the heeby jeebies and didn't make the ride back from the beach) and would recommend a horse ride as a good way of enjoying the local countryside.

My 2 daughters rode with Cleggan during our visit in June. It was an EXCELLENT ride to Omey Island. My husband & I met them at the beach and were able to take pictures. The guides were great! Highly recommend them if you are interested in riding in Ireland!

Some of the horses were really tired and did not have the energy to canter or trot properly. It left the impression that the horses are working too much. Also the stables and pasture seemed quite small.

Also I think that on a ride like this, the more experiences riders and first-timer could be separated to two different group for the whole duration of the trip, not only for cantering. I would have liked to trot more, but some people did not know even know how to sit on the horse, so the pace was quite slow. Even on the beach we were told to stay in line, not to pass each other, which was really frustrating.

All this said, riding on the beach was awesome! Some amazing scenery also on the way. I think a ride like this is perfect for newbies, but if you have a bit more experience, book a private tour.

This tour was phenomenal. I went by myself because my friend wasn’t a fan of horses. Although I had only been on a horse a tiny handful of times, and never in an English saddle, Ellie was very patient with me and my horse, Jessie, was great. I learned roughly how to trot, and got to see a lot of the Irish countryside. If you’re not used to horseback riding only book the short tour.

I had a day by myself so decided to go on a 2 1/2 hour horseback ride out to Omey Island. This is a top notch group and very well organized ride. They assess each rider’s capabilities and allow each one to ride to their skills. The staff was incredibly helpful and nice. The scenery along the ride was just breathtaking! I was very impressed with the whole experience, start to finish!

This was NOT a good experience. We showed up 25 minutes before our booked 90 minute ride scheduled for 11am. The owner, older man, said he had no record of our reservation, although my wife had confirmed with Alana 3 weeks prior. When we asked how he’d accommodate us, he told us our only option was to take the 3 hour ride at 1245. No offer to give us the agreed upon price of €45 or even an apology! Just “well I guess she didn’t write it down”. What type of business operates this way?

My wife began trying to contact the Centre via email 4 weeks prior to our trip. When she didn’t get a response she called several times before Judy the owner picked up, said she was in middle of giving lessons and passed phone to Alana , who took our name and reserved time slot. My wife called 2 weeks later to confirm.
We were only in Connemara for 2 days and planned an entire day around this 90 minute ride. Because we now needed to wait around almost 2hours we had to get lunch, spending another €25.
Because our 3 hour ride didn’t end until nearly 4pm we only had little more than 1 hour to spend at our other planned activity, Kylemore Abbey, which should have been 2+ hours

The ride itself was ok. However, the initial interaction with the owner, his lack of accommodation, or even the obligatory apology leads me to believe that there are far better equestrian choices in Connemara

The stables located just outside Cleggan offers horse riding to Omey Island. The round trip takes about 3 hours, first across the peninsula, then on the beach over to Omey island. Boots and helmets are provided. They take beginners and do everything they can to make it safe.

One of the most delightful three hours I have spent in my life was the trek to Omey Island. Staff were knowledgeable and efficient, getting us into well-fitting boots and hats, matching us skillfully to horses based on experience, and assessing our riding abilities. The trek out to the beach was through gorgeous countryside with lovely views; the canter (or trot) on the huge beach was simply heaven. I loved my horse and wanted to take him home with me.
