About
Perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Dun Aonghasa is the largest of the prehistoric stone forts of the Aran Islands. It is enclosed by three massive dry-stone walls and a chevaux-de-frise consisting of blocks of limestone set vertically into the ground to deter attackers. Originally constructed c.1100BC, it was re-fortified around 700-800 AD. Excavations revealed significant evidence of prehistoric metalworking, as well as several burials. Visitor safety information: The fort is about 1km from the Visitors Centre and is approached over rising ground. The last section of the path is over rough, natural rock and care is needed, especially when descending. Boots or strong walking shoes are recommended. There is no fence or barrier at the edge of the cliff.

- Garrett PAylesbury, United Kingdom240 contributionsDefinitely Do ItSuch an interesting island but be warned, don't try walking along the cliff tops to visit this historic Celtic fort. After 3 hours of trying to do so, my legs were ready to fall off! We headed back towards the road, walked back to the harbour and got oourselves a bus to the fort. You then have a 20 minute walk upto the remains. It's certainly worth seeing and experiencing just standing on the cliff top within the fort and soaking up the atmosphere and surroundingVisited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 15, 2023

- Eleanor R348 contributionsPhenomenal viewsThis was one of my favorite things we did on our trip. It's important to note that it is not an easy walk from the visitor's center. It's steep and very rocky but absolutely worth it for the phenomenal views. I would not recommend bringing small children as there are no railings or anything to prevent falling off the cliffs. This makes the view even better but is definitely worth noting.Hi BJonesEsq, Thanks for your review and we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your trip to Dún Aonghasa. I would like to point out however that Dún Aonghasa is safe for children, as long as they stay with their carers. Speaking from experience, I don't find it difficult to prevent my kids from falling off cliffs!Written May 26, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 16, 2024
- W&YBoulder, Colorado101 contributionsA breathtaking view of InishmoreThe hike to the fort is well worth your time. It took about 20 minutes to walk each way. Wear sturdy shoes (or sneakers at least) or bring hiking poles. Lots of rock on the path and you are going uphill to breathtaking views. The visitor center lobby has facts and the history of the place.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 21, 2024
- Bronwen D9 contributionsWorth the visit!!Patricia was so informative. Really helpful and kind to us especially when we discussed photos of the Aran islands. Fabulous site to visit but very very windy. Take good care to stay away from the edge of the cliff. Do visit this ancient fort because it tells so much history of lives lived in the past. Worth the hilly walk.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 7, 2024
- wild_scullyLimerick, Ireland27 contributionsBreathtaking views! You forget about everything just to enjoy the views!Fantastic visit and were lucky with the weather (no rain!) Not overcrowded like Cliffs of Moher -so enjoyable, like a 'hidden' gem. It's a pity we didn't have much time as we were on a day trip to the island- definitely planning an overnight trip next time.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 4, 2024

Dun Aonghasa was the whole reason for me to go to Inishmore. I have wanted to see this for years. It is very easy to get to with a broad clearly defined path leading up to it. They were constructing a new entrance for the main enclosure and so we could not go inside but we could get inside the two outer defensive walls. You can also, if you want to, go right up to the edge of the cliff, so watch your kids, and your husbands. One other thing worth noting: There are signs posted in several places that drones are not allowed.

Hi Timothy R, Thanks for your review and we are delighted you enjoyed your visit to Dún Aonghasa. Thank you as well for noting the signs regarding drones. We do not allow drones to be flown on site for the safety of visitors and staff alike. Drones ruin the peaceful atmosphere of Dún Aonghasa, and cause a distraction when we want people to be watching their footing as they cross the rough, cliff-top landscape.

As part of our tour of Inishmore, we spent about 45 minutes visiting the ring fort. The visitor center staff were great, the toilets were clean (as they seemed to be wherever we traveled in Ireland), and the displays were informative and readable. The hike up and back combined with a bike tour was physically challenging, but it felt great to be working the muscles.

This old fort is probably the highlight of a visit to Inis Mor. However, it is a fairly rugged climb to get up there, and a few euros to do it. The path up to it is gravel for about half way. But, the next part is rugged rocks, but doable. I used a walking pole, and was glad I had it. The views are breath taking, and the edge of the cliff is quite an adrenaline rush. Pictures don't do it justice. This old stone structure is dated back to 1100 BC! How in the world they could do this is unbelievable. As one might expect, it is very windy, and approaching the cliff's edge is very risky, although many people were doing it. A great and thrilling experience.

It is a 30 minute roundtrip hike to the top. There is a carpark at the bottom where you can also lock your bike (which is a nice way to get around the island if you are day-tripping it or doing an overnight). The views are worth the hike! If you are going on a day trip, just make sure you have a nice day before going.

We had a perfect day for our visit. We visited on their free day (but also had a voucher from our B&B), 15minutes or so walk from the visitor centre and the most amazing views. Would have to be one of my favourite places we visited. Just stunning.

It's a hike, don't get me wrong, but it's definitely worth it in the end! The views are spectacular, way better than Cliffs of Moher in my opinion. Must be physically fit and able to walk 1 kilometer on sometimes uneven surfaces. I visited on a sunny day, but if the ground is wet I imagine it's even more tricky to do this walk. This whole island is amazing and definitely worth the ferry ride over. Plan to spend the entire day, or at least as long as the ferry runs, to see it all. I've never seen another landscape quite like this one, it amazes me that people even live on this island!

Stunning. We cycled and then climbed up with our 3 children, 3,7 and 10 years old. They all found it enjoyable. Carried the smallest child part of the way. The climb took us around 15 to 20minutes. Lady at the desk and lady in the gift shop were very friendly. Toilets in clean condition.

We stayed the night on Inis Mor and took advantage of a bike hire (no eBike for us). It's an adventurous way to explore the island on your time. From the bike hire in Kilonan to the visitor center of Dun Aonghasa, allow 30 minutes. Park your bikes, then make the gradual ascent to the fort. The topography is rather desolate, rocks all around you. Yet once at the fort, you're met with amazing views of the Atlantic. I pondered, "How did the early settlers managed here?" It's such a remote setting. Time your visit right and you could have the fort all to yourself when it opens!

How long of a walk is it from the ferry to Dun Aonghasa?
Written June 28, 2018
Hi Micksum, If you look at Inis Mór on Googlemaps there are three roads heading east-west from Cill Rónáin towards Dún Aonghasa. The northernmost one runs along the north coast of the island and is mostly used by cyclists, as well as some buses and jarveys. The middle route is the main road and is mostly used by buses and heads uphill from Cill Rónáin. This road can be busy in the middle of the day during the summer. The best route for walkers in the sothernmost road. This road is closed to traffic and is only used by farmers to access their fields in the winter so it will be very quiet. The road is not paved so most cyclists don't use it. Walking the southern road (signposted An Bóthar Ó Dheas) should take about 2 hours, whereas the other routes will take about 1.5 hours.

Eravamo iinteressati al giro in bici ma non riusciamo a capire quanto siano ripide le salite (non siamo per niente allenati!)...è fattibile o meglio il giro in pullmino?
Written June 28, 2018
È molto fattibile andare in bicicletta a Dún Aonghasa. È possibile noleggiare biciclette al molo. Ci sono due strade che puoi percorrere. Uno va vicino alla costa ed è prevalentemente pianeggiante. L'altra strada è in salita 0,3, piana 0,3 e in discesa 0,3. Il ciclo richiederà circa 45 minuti.

Is the ferry crossing rough? I hear some people get seasick?
Written November 16, 2016
It is rough in winter but during spring summer it's very calm, unless weather predicted bad its a lovely crossing

Take the ferry from the mainland, then choose your island touring preference, by bike, trap and pony, or island tour. The ferry is for people only, you may not bring your car to the island. We had a good weather day, so the bikes were perfect. The electric bike was great for the hills on the island.

We have plans to visit the Aran Islands in June with our children, ages 10 and 5.5. Is the terrain at Dun Aonghasa too difficult and/or unsafe for children? If bringing children is ill-advised, should we focus our time on the islands elsewhere or skip the visit to the islands entirely and wait until they are older? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Dún Aonghasa is perfectly safe for families but it's best to know what's ahead.
Dún Aonghasa is located on the edge of a 87m high cliff. There is no fence or barrier at the edge.
The walk from the visitor centre to Dún Aonghasa is 1km long. We recommend that boots or strong walking shoes be worn. Most of the path is paved with gravel and the degree of difficulty is defined as 'Easy'. The land on either side of the path is used by local farmers so please do not cross the walls.
The final 100m of the walk consists of a steeper climb over rough, stepped, natural rock. The rocks can be slippy. The degree of difficulty on this section is defined as 'Moderate'.
Please take particular care as you descend from the Dún, back to the visitors centre. 80% of injuries happen during this part of the visit, as there is a greater chance of slipping in the natural rock.
We look forward to welcoming you to Dún Aonghasa is June!
