About
Travel south along the coast to the picturesque heritage town of Dalkey, 25 minutes from Dublin City. Some artefacts date inhabitation of Dalkey Island to 4,500 B.C. At historic Dalkey Castle (1390), Costumed Living History Actors bring the ancient history to colourful life with archery, barber surgery and a cook giving a masterclass on circular economy (nothing was wasted) in medieval times, as part of every guided tour. Tour also includes exploration of the atmospheric 10th Century St Begnet's church & graveyard connected with the site. The heritage centre is also included with interactive screens in different languages & scale models. A Writers’ Gallery features the work of 45 locally connected creative artists from James Joyce to Bono and Samuel Beckett to Maeve Binchy. Climb to the battlements for magnificent views of the surrounding stunning landscape view of the sea and mountains. If you are with a larger group, perhaps add on a guided walk. Tours every 90 minutes.

Dalkey Heritage Museum and Town - A Great Day Trip
We decided to take the Dart train out of Dublin to see the coastal area south of the city. Dalkey is a charming seaside town that offers the Heritage Museum, shops and restaurants. We took the tour of the museum, we were the only two so it was a private tour. The tour is set up where local people act our their roles as barber/docter, archer and cook in explaining life in the castle back in the 1700's. It was a lot of fun and the museum has a lot to offer. Would highly recommend taking the Dart train a short ride (30 minutes) down the coast to visit the town of Dalkey. One of the highlights of our visit to Dublin area.
The DART really is a great way to get here from the city centre and appreciate the scenery on route. We are delighted to hear that our Living History Tour of Dalkey Castle was one of the highlights of your visit to Dublin! Thank you for the five star review.

A fun and engaging experience for families
Ireland has many castles, abbeys, and other ruins worth exploring, and Dalkey Castle stands out in its blend of visual and interactive exhibits that goes into depth of the history of the castle, church ruin, and the people who lived there. What was especially engaging for both adults and children are the demonstrations of viking coin making, walking tour of the castle and grounds, and of course, the actors who demonstrate the history in character. The children delighted in handing the medieval weapons and tools. This is a must-see if you're visiting the Dalkey area, not far from Dublin, and a highlight of our trip.
Thank you for the very detailed review of your visit to our Living History Experience. We are delighted that all of the family enjoyed it. It is wonderful to hear that you thought it was 'a must-see' and a highlight of your trip.

    Fun, interactive history tour
This is a cute little castle where the staff and actors do a great job of bringing the history alive. We loved the tour around the grounds with the actors in period costumes and they added some fun and humor to the history they were sharing. We learned a ton about the history of the area.
Great to hear that you loved the tour and had fun with the actors. We appreciate you taking the time to review us.

Interaction with the characters was the highlight. My French students loved the barber, archer, servant lady, and making their very own Viking coin, of course. Video and exhibition very informative and our tour guide pulled it all together.
Hello Frances, Thank you for bringing your French students to our Living History tour here at Dalkey Castle. It is great to hear that they enjoyed the interactive element of it so much. We appreciate you taking the time to submit the review.

    Fun and informative!
I loved this sweet little tour! For the small space, it was so very informative and interesting. I especially loved the live actors teaching us so much about the time back when the castle was built. It was well worth the ticket price!

Great day out for adults or kids, really fun!
Myself and my friend had a brilliant time visiting dalkey castle. Our tour group was small, and we were first shown an informational video about the history of the castle. Then our tour guide brought us round the castle, where we heard from some actors in period costumes about their lives, some info from our guide, and some fun activities along the way! There were 2 kids in our tour group who also seemed to have a great time and the actors were brilliant with them. Really great fun with a lot of medieval and local history, great for kids and adults. Would highly recommend!
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to review your experience and for letting us know how much you enjoyed it. The actors are very good at responding to whatever combination of visitors arrives for each tour and taking note of children when they are there and so hopefully making the visit enjoyable for all the family.

    Fun and Informative!
Visiting Dalkey and had the opportunity to visit this amazing place. The museum was small, but filled with interesting historical details, in many different languages! Photos, models, a short video, artifacts and tours, were all available to explore the rich history of Dalkey Castle. The tour was particularly interesting, as local actors play the part of historic individuals to see what it would have been like to live in the castle and or community hundreds of years ago. It was a great balance of history, theatre, information that was perfect for children and adults. This is a must when you visit Dalkey!
Hi Stephen, It is great to hear that you enjoyed the tour so much that you recommend it as ‘a must’ visit in Dalkey. Good to know that it appealed to both adults and children as it can be tricky for families to find something that all will enjoy. Thank you for the review.

History came to life in Dalkey Castle
History came to life in Dalkey Castle. While the friendly staff explains the strategic importance of Dalkey and the castle in history, it is also possible to experience it with the amazing small plays by the actors. It is both an educative and fun experience. Highly recommended!
Thank you for the review. Delighted to hear that you were entertained and enlightened by the tour.

    Great experience for family
Great experience, The actors were amazing! It was entertaining as well as informative. Making the coin was the highlight of the journey, and our 7 year old love it. I feel the beginning of the trip was a bit dragging and boring, though. It would be nicer starting with the positive energy and fun. Also the there was no time for kids to look around properly or take a picture. Having a nice photo zone and giving some time to take a picture can be a bit of advertising.
Delighted that you and your seven year old enjoyed the experience so much. It’s always a delight to see the joy on the young people’s faces. We try to find the balance between information and fun, hence the short introductory DVD to see Dalkey in context before heading out to ‘living in the past’ with the actors. We have had a busy summer and usually there’s lots of time to browse. We are sorry that you didn’t get that chance on the day you visited. If you are back in the area do let us know, in advance, and you can browse to your heart’s content. Most people take a quick photo on their camera phones nowadays. Hope to see you back for Halloween or Christmas when the programme changes.

Visited this beautiful place in May 2019, and had fab time there. Talented actors are making great show around while explaining life and culture of old Dalkey castle. Tour lasts for some 45 mins, and it's great for family visits, couples and for solo visits too. Near castle you'll find cheap parking and a plenty of nice restaurants and beer gardens. Wonderful!

Had a guided tour of Dalkey Castle and heritage centre yesterday. It was an excellent tour led by a lovely lady called JD. We got a very warm welcome on arrival by the two ladies on reception. The tour was enhanced by the addition of actors who gave you a flavour of what times were like in olden days in the castle. Well worth a visit. The castle is a two minute walk from the dart station. The tour takes an hour and can be booked online beforehand. This tour would be enjoyed by all the family.

I visited Dalkey castle with my sister on Thursday the 7th September and I have to say it was definitely one I can highly recommend !! The guided tour never let your mind wonder away as the actors & the tour guide kept giving you a great insight into the past. The past surely came alive!!! I will not tell you all the interesting info I learned as I don't want to spoil it for you, so if you have any chance to visit it you will come out smiling 😁.

We had a lovely trip to Dalkey Castle yesterday, with our three boys aged 9,6 and 3. I've often walked past but was never in before. It's definitely worth visiting!

Minota, our tour guide, was lovely - very knowledgeable about the castle and its history, and very engaging in her delivery. We especially enjoyed her coin minting demonstration!

The live actor tour was such fun, and horrible histories fans would love it! It really brought the castle to life.

We had good weather and the views from the top of the castle views from top were spectacular....and from there you could actually see how communication with the signalling tower on Killiney would work...

Unfortunately due to covid we couldnt view the models and information in the visitor centre.... But we will be back!! Thanks to all involved!

We visited on impulse as we were walking through Dalkey. The price of €15 for adults seemed a bit steep for such a small castle but it was well worth it. We initially were shown a DVD giving an overview of the history and structure of the castle. During the tour three entertaining and witty actors interacted with us giving information on medieval healthcare (barber/surgeon) castle defence (archer) and diet for master and servants (cook). The tour also included a guided visit to the charming graveyard. Afterwards we were free to look at the information in the heritage centre which was well presented and there were models of the layout of Dalkey through the ages. I am from Dublin and went with my American husband and his brother and we would all highly recommend it.

Wonderful. I went in, thinking it was just a small walk thru museum with a few diagrams you read. It ended up being a guided tour with re-enactors showing what life was like at the time Dalkey Castle was built. I reserved a less popular tour time, which led me to being the only person on the tour. They still did the full presentations like they would for a whole group.
I don't know how much tickets normally are, as I went in 2021 when a lot of prices for heritage sites in the country are free. I was allowed to take pictures the entire time, and some of the best images from my entire trip were from the top of the castle.
Even though I went alone, as an adult in my 20's, this would easily be a great family friendly even to take kids to while in town.

Our tour guides were brilliant and engaging. Their Dalkey story related local contexts with historical details in a hugely interesting narrative. The following day, I continued to muse over how archery was developed, why yew trees are in most graveyards and how your health can improve with a little bloodletting. The acting, and setting were first class. Terrific entertainment !

This tour should not be missed! The Heritage Center at Dalkey Castle has been really well done and is informative and educational. The tour included a DVD presentation, a guide presentation, and then “daily life” presentations by three actors who did a wonderful job educating the group while doing it with lots of charm and humor. It’s amazing how much has been done at this castle to provide a wonderful story of its history and what life was like in the 1500s at the castle.
