I found the Historic Southern Railway Station on the TripAdvisor listings. It was easy to find but not easy to photograph. It’s built really close to the side of the hill. There was a line of cars, so you couldn’t see much of the train that went through. It is a beautiful building. It looks as though it’s great for events. We did not go into the bar.

In May, while staying in Knoxville for but a short time, I discovered the Southern Railroad Station, and being the “train buff,” that I am, could not let the opportunity pass. Unfortunately, this structure at 306 W Depot Ave now seems to mostly be an event venue, and much is closed to the general public. Still, there was much to see, and especially the impressive architecture, harkening to a bygone era. The main structure, which served as both the passenger terminal and freight depot for many years, is impressive, and massive enough to not get lost in the near-by warehouses. It was completed and opened for service in the early 1900's, and is a beautiful testament to the Neo-Classical style, with several Federalist elements of railroad architecture. Though I was disappointed that it was not open to the public, it was still well worth the walk down to the tracks, and the time to view it from almost all angles. It is still a beautiful building. Just the architecture is worth the time to visit. There is a wine shop, and a restaurant, but both were closed during my early morning visit, unfortunately.

They don't build them like this anymore. The architecture is truly beautiful. We walked the entire depot. We did not want to miss anything.

We had a great meal and great night. They catered a meal about 80 people with chicken, roast beef, steamed vegetables, roasted potatoes and green beans. A salad with choice of dressings was also available with the buffet meal. There was room to dance with a live band and comfortable seating without being crowded. Good acoustics for speakers and singing as well as the band.
