My wife and I have been learning Latin dances including Merengue, Salsa, Mambo, and Bachata. We have traveled to a variety of venues when we travel to dance. There may be a variety of places to dance in Knoxville.
However, there are no big venues for Latin dancing. I had heard about a location hosted by Waldo and Jackie who teach Salsa and Bachata (SalsaKnox Dance Company). On Friday (July 11th), we decided to travel to Market Square and find this place at Cocoa Moon Restaurant (2nd and 4th Fridays of the month).
For starters, you can take lessons on Salsa that night. Lessons start at 9:00pm. We arrived at 10:15pm. The location is pretty easy to find. Parking was not difficult. We opted to park on the street for zero cost.
The dance club is in the back of the restaurant but easy to locate. The place is SAFE (especially for single ladies by themselves) with lots of lighting to the restaurant! The restaurant server was very friendly as I ordered some a water with two cups of ice for our dancing exploration with SalsaKnox.
The dance class was just ending. The cover charge was $10 per person.
The place was practically packed. Wando was the dj, providing a variety of high energy Latin music. Salsa dancing! Incredible Salsa dancing! Bachata! Merengue! The dance floor was packed. We found ourselves dancing with experienced Salsa dancers.
Ladies were being swing around the floor like yo-yos. I was amazed to watch as experienced, male dancers would look around the room and asked single ladies to dance, regardless of the skill level. The atmosphere was simply electric. If you are any kind of a dancer/admirer of Latin dancing and music, I would highly recommend experiencing Salsa dancing at the Coco Moon.

My wife and I opted for Latin dancing for a night out. We decided on a dance sponsored by the SalsaKnox Dance Company. Once held at Cocoa Moon Restaurant, Waldo and Jackie now host this event every Saturday at 7:30pm, Holiday Inn (Cedar Bluff). There was a variety of dances including Merengue, Salsa, Mambo, and Bachata.
At 7:30pm, a free Salsa dancing is given with a lot of great dance tips. I would suggest getting there early. There were over 40 people at the free dance lesson. No partner is necessary because partners are rotated during the dance lesson. After the class, there is a dance party where you can practice your new steps. We have been this event before.
Personally, I love the new location because parking is convenient and access to the hotel is easy (from Interstate I-40). Wando played some high energy Latin music. The dance floor was packed. Several single men were dancing with single women who didn't have partners. Thus, you don't need a partner to enjoy yourself there!
The Salsa dance awareness is growing; the dance crowds continue to get larger at these venues. One note would be to check the website (www.salsaknox.com) if you haven’t been there before or in a long while so that you can be fully aware of any changes (i.e. time, location). I would highly recommend experiencing Salsa dancing there.

Always wanted to learn to Salsa? Think you could never learn Bachata? Wrong!! Dance classes at Salsa Knox will have you Dancing like a star. Waldo and his wife Jackie are both so passionate about teaching that you will soon be dancing like a pro. My daughter and I attended a ladies only class then my daughter continued on to take several more classes. We both enjoyed the safe environment and the energy is high! Once you see them dance together you will know why they are such amazing teachers!
