- Denise LWoodbridge, New Jersey169 contributionsA must when you're in Knoxville, TN!A great place to walk around & shop! So funky & fun...I didn't want to leave LOL! Lots of artsy places to check out. It may be smelly, but Graffiti Alley is really cool to look at.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 11, 2023
- Ellen BHortonville, Wisconsin1,331 contributionsGreat Public SpaceMarket Square is a great place to hang out, dine, drink, or just stroll around in downtown Knoxville. They have put up a bunch of cute decorations for Halloween. I definitely recommend strolling around Market Square if you are visiting Knoxville.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 18, 2023
- nfmom2Cleveland, Ohio29 contributionsUnique place to visitWe were pleasantly surprised with Market Square. We enjoyed walking around, seeing the different shops & restaurants and looking at the artwork. My daughter enjoyed getting pictures in front of the different murals. Different musicians around the area singing and/or just playing an instrument. We ate at Cafe 4 and sat in their outdoor patio area. It was fun people-watching. Such a variety of people, too. From families to couples to groups of friends. And we felt completely safe. Another nice feature was the free parking in the local parking garage.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 9, 2024
- Jennifer M74 contributionsNeat little area!I wasn’t really sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. They had lots of little stores to find touristy stuff at, cool little bars with good drinks, and people doing random stuff- like group hula hooping/jump roping. Suddenly, there was a gigantic downpour, so we didn’t get to finish looking around and experiencing everything, but I hope to make it back!Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 1, 2024

I found this place to be rather dull , they have a Tupelo Honey ,
but everything else , was nondescript local places to eat and drink . They do have a Mast store , which is quite nice , they
had an indie bookstore , whick I like . The only place , I purchased anything was at Knoxville Chocolate , which
had a small , but nice selection . Nothing really popped
out at me .

This was a fun place - we had lunch there - but not alot going on. Maybe it was the time of day or Covid or both. We ate a great roof top bar, only draw back it had an extremely limited menu

This great area, in downtown Knoxville, offers great shopping and many places to dine. The grounds are lovely, well kept, and pedestrian only. It is a great place to just stroll. We were lucky enough to visit the weekend of the Chalk Walk. Many artists came out to create their masterpieces for all to enjoy. That was a very pleasant surprise! This square is quite popular for festivals but just as pleasant to stroll around on a lazy afternoon.

The city seems to be allowing the homeless to use the public parking garages now. While homeless used to mill around the outside of the entry to the Market Square parking garage on Wall, now they are inside. We passed some sitting inside the building across from the ticket/pay booth. While asking the attendant if cars are being broken into or vandalized we saw another homeless man climbing the stairs to the upper levels. This feels unsafe. We've been harrassed for money nearly every time we try to enjoy a stroll in Market Square and occasionally on Gay Street. We really have enjoyed the downtown area the past several years but the situation is becoming more intimidating and depressing. I hope the Mayor makes changes soon.

After dinner, we walked a few blocks to check out this area. Found the cool street art in the alley and walked through the park area to see the sculptures and water features. It was a nice evening with lots of people out walking. The only downfall was a sad homeless person obviously suffering from PTSD screaming at his "soldiers." Otherwise it is a cool area.

When we were here on a Wednesday, they had a farmers market set up. It added to the ambiance. Either way, this was worth checking out. There are stores along both sides, and an alley, Strong Street (more of a one way alley than a street) next to it that features local graffiti artists. The graffiti is not the usual ugly tags one sees on the sides of buildings and train cars, but instead, some excellent quality artwork on the walls of the alley buildings.
The market place is quiet and sits next to a park. Even with the farmers market up and running, it was not noisy. It was an inviting place to wander around.
As for public restrooms, be aware that they are located to the right of the Wall Avenue entrance of the adjacent parking garage, just west of Market Square. We had to ask, and ended up walking back to the garage! They don't stand out.

Loved this area. Enjoyed the Saturday farmers market. Great place to get fresh goods and veggies. Some vendors and great merchandise. Little historic stops with statues within the market area is super cool.

We stopped in Knoxville for a night during a road trip and walked to Market Square. There are a number of shops and restaurants there, nearly all with outdoor dining options (important during this COVID pandemic). There were restaurants for most tastes. Despite what we had read about traveling through Tennessee, nearly everyone was wearing masks. The area is adjacent to a very pretty park with water features and artwork and walking distance from many hotels. I would check it out if you are in the area.

Market Square was an absolutely charming place to walk around, shop, eat and/or drink. It has a true Southern feel to it, and it is a great pedestrian area. We enjoyed it very much on what might have been one of the last cool evenings of the Spring. It was special.

This plaza in downtown Knoxville is chock full of restaurants and makes for a very pleasant visit. There is a park next to it and the East Tennessee Historical Society (museum) on the other side of the park. On Gay St. very close to Market Square are a couple of ice cream shops. Hint, hint!

How is Knoxville on Good Friday are Restaruant and shops open

As far as I know, they are. I have not heard otherwise. If you have a restaurant in mind, you might want to double check with that individual restaurant.

I'll be travelling through Knoxville on New Years Eve just for night. I'd like to go out for a drink and celebrate New Years with some good people. Would this be a good place to "wing it" and are there hotels close by?
Written December 20, 2017
I would recommend it. Sure it will be crazy busy, but there are many other options within walking distance if it's too crowded. We also tried Scruffy City across the street which has three levels and looked like a great place to party. There are tons of hotels but I'm not sure how close. Check it out here and see what you can find.

Where is parking if towing a camper
Written October 23, 2017
University Commons is a shopping Center on the west end of the UT Campus on Cumberland Boulevard with a Wal Mart and a Publix. The parking is free. Park there and ride the free Trolley (Trolley looking bus) downtown. The drivers are friendly and will help you decide where to get off the Trolley.
