I found this by accident. I rarely go into visitor centers in cities, usually preferring to explore on my own, but I'd heard about a architectural walking tour of historic buildings and I wanted to pick-up a guide to it. I did find the guide booklet but got distracted from the tour by the Blue Plate Special, a noon daily free concert produced by Knoxville public radio station WDVX at the visitor center.
Every Monday through Saturday, at noon, those in the know gather in the fifty or so seats surrounding the small stage for the daily live broadcast that might be folk music, bluegrass, gospel, jazz, rock or something else. I was lucky to see two acts the same day, one a solo singer songwriter with a beautiful voice named Amy Andrews and a very personable set of twins who write and sing songs with intelligent lyrics and who go be the name of the Skipperdees. The schedule for shows is here http://www.wdvx.com/live-shows/blue-plate-special/schedule/.
If you're in Knoxville during the week and have the time, the Blue Plate Special is a free treat.
