The monument is dedicated to the Greek people that were killed in mass execution by a firing squad from the village of Alikianos by German paratroopers. The executions were ordered by General Kurt Student. In reprisal for the active resistance of the Cretan civilians during the battle of Crete WWII General Goring infuriated by the involvement of the local population and the heavy losses inflicted on them ordered collective punishment. 160 civilians were killed there by the river. You can see the bones of the people killed in this Memorial Monument.
