My wife, 11 year old son and I hiked this trail and it is not a walk in the park. This trek is one of the hardest I have hiked, but the beauty of the mountains and ruins totally makes it worth it. The biting flies will all but carry you away. They find holes in clothes and work their way around repellent. I strongly recommend long pants and tight shirts that are designed for sports and gloves for your hands. I used white gardener gloves with the little black rubber dots on them. If you like to hike in shorts, reconsider. take plenty of small (local) bills and coins because everything is cash only and a little on the expensive side. There is water in various places along the trail that must be treated. Buying water will be expensive. Good hiking shoes with some ankle support is also highly recommended. Dont forget to protect yourself from those biting flies!

Fantastic experience!!! If you are fit enough to trek 3-4 days uphill with a pack at high altitude than you need to add this to your bucket list! There are mules you can hire pretty cheap to carry your stuff too, if need be.

Tough hike to get there and back but what a site! There were very few others and the ruins are fantastic. You could see more walls anytime you looked into the jungle. When and if they finish reclaiming the site from the jungle it is going to be huge. The ruins are not as compacted as Machu Picchu, but there is so much to experience. It felt like we had it to ourselves. Get in shape, then plan a visit before it becomes too well known.

Hard hike, totally worth it!! Imagine climbing stairs for 14 miles, then make it hot and buggy. Once at the top it is amazing.... You can drink the glacier water and relax in cool mountain air!! The ruins are wild!
