Overview
More
The Cowan Railroad Museum represents the railroad that has been an integral part of the city since 1849 when construction began on boring a railroad tunnel through the mountain two miles southeast of town. The Cumberland Mountain Tunnel was finished in 1852 before the railroad actually made it to Cowan from Nashville. The town, the railroad and the tunnel still exist today. In support of that endeavor and later frequent trains through this region, a substantial frame depot was built in 1904, and that building is where the museum now houses its collection for your enjoyment. View railroad artifacts and memoriabilia with a step back in time. Thousands of papers and books make it a must-see place for railroad historians.Free admission, but donations gladly accepted. All volunteer organization is open May through October, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm; Sundays from 1 to 4 pm.

Neat stuff. Old engine and a few cars. Period stuff. Very near the Cowan Tunnel, the longest RR Tunnel in eastern U. S. Tunnel unaccessable unfortunately. Very near Sewanee: the University of THE South. Beautiful campus.

Staff VERY friendly and helpful. They know their history. Very nice museum. Museum is slightly out-of-the way but well worth the time to find it. The rail line is still very active and a good place to see trains go by.

If you are meandering through Tennessee drop into this museum. The attendants know the history of this particular stop and railroads in general. You get info on the buildings, the restructuring of train movement, view real time tracking of trains and get the social history...More

Interesting local railroad history. A Sign Board inside the building names the railroad's employees.

This is a quality museum for the family. Small and just now getting off the ground, it affords an intimate look at the RR industry in Middle TN. Nice displays of how the system operated over the years.
