- Raymond C1 contributionDay to remember. Was truly a once in a lifetime experience. The return of the Summerville run featuring a double-header with Southerns #4501 and #630 was itself a spectacular sight. - Lou HMorristown, Tennessee79 contributionsChoo Choo!!We are virtual railfans but this time opted to ride the Mission Ridge Tour. We were able to walk up and get tickets. The trip is only an hour but you ride out and see the turntable demonstration then come back. This trip is about HISTORY not SCENERY! So remember that. There was food to purchase if you would like and plenty of picnic tables to have a picnic; sit and watch the other trains come thru (commercial traffic); while there tour the museum but the "old" rail cars are worth the trip.We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed the Mission Ridge Local Tour and appreciated the historical focus of the trip. It's great to know you found value in our museum and vintage rail cars. - wehavnfunBillings, Montana74 contributionsSteamThere are several trips to choose from. We chose a very nice train ride from an old station to the round out and back. They gave a short presentation in their restoration shop while the steam locomotive was being moved to the other side of the train before heading back to the original station. It was a warm day and the opportunity to purchase a slightly overpriced soda from a vintage Coke cooler was appreciated. Don’t miss the museum at the top of the hill.I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your train ride and the presentation at our restoration shop. - James LKnoxville, Tennessee54 contributionsTea and Trains - The Perfect ComboMy wife and I were celebrating our 11 year anniversary and decided to do the tea room upstairs in the station, before our train ride to the museum. The tear room was absolutely amazing. The presentation, food and tea were all so decedent and delicious! When the staff found out it was our anniversary, they even sent us a small gift to our table. It was very sweet and totally unexpected. The train ride was very nice, yet shorter than I expected. But going through the fall leaves was very nice and the feeling of nostalgia made up for it! The museum was also really cool! They had a lot of really interesting trains and locomotives to view. We even got a demonstration of a turn table, which was really neat to watch. The whole experience was worth the money and I advise anyone going to do the tea room as well! It’s a quaint, romantic setting that is perfect for couples and friends!Thank you for your wonderful review, James! Need Just few Moments of quiet to enjoy. The Views we're lovely, my only recommendation is that the informative speech should cease once the Trip Starts Journey Back so that one can Converse with Family/Friends. It was so loud we couldnt speak with one another without being extremely loud. So No one in Our Party would do a second trip. But i would recommend people trying it once.Dear katiemT4001WU, thank you for your valuable feedback. He made a point of letting us know this was not a scenic tour but a history of train tour. The train is a restored antique train from 1946 Jason was interesting and he was right it was not a scenic ride. You stop at the end of the line so they can turn the engine around and reattach it for the ride back. That was very interesting and the station was fun to sit and take pictures in. My grandson loved the ride. They have a Christmas North Pole Limited train that looks amazing and also a Holiday Lights Train. We're thrilled to hear that you and your grandson enjoyed the historical journey on our Missionary Ridge Local train, NorCal-traveler08! We took a ride on the Hiwassee Loop Railroad trip in October, to enjoy the changing of the leaves, and the trip was great. The conductor & staff are very courteous and knowledgeable, and we were thoroughly entertained. It's not expensive and worth every dollar. Only took 4 hours and there's lots to see. Snacks are provided for a minimum cost and you get a wonderful running narrative as you enjoy the scenery. Take the time to go to Etowah and catch the train!

We decided to check out the railroad and do the Missionary Ridge Local ride on our vacation to Chattanooga. We arrived about 40 minutes early, checked out the Depot store and grabbed some snacks. The staff was friendly and helpful. For our trip, a large school group was also present, but the staff grouped them on a single car (of the 3) so the rest of the guests weren't swarmed by little kids. The ride to East Chattanooga was about 3 miles and took about 15 minutes. The seats were comfortable and the information about the history of the rail line was interesting.
Upon arrival at our destination, we watched a demonstration of the engine being turned around, then went to the shop to see their current projects. We then re-boarded the train for the return trip.
The cost for our ride was $23 per adult (less for our 10 year old) and included museum entry as well. It was well worth it. If you have anyone in your family even remotely interested in trains (or enjoys train rides), you should check this one out.

We enjoyed our trip with the Tennessee Valley Railroad, it was educational and fun. All of the people we had contact with were friendly and helpful. We arrived earlier than expected and were able to change our departure time to an earlier time so we didn't have to sit around and wait. When we boarded the train we were greeted with smiles and shown to our seats. At the stop where the engine was placed on the turntable and turned around we were able to spend some time looking around without being rushed. If you are looking for something to do in Chattanooga whether you have just a couple of hours or more there are several different train rides to choose from, all of which are fairly priced. We will definitely be back to try one of the longer trips when we return to Chattanooga.

I thought dinner and a train ride would be a great outing for my family and I. We made reservations for the 8:15 dinner which we was skeptical about taking due to not being able to see the view because Of the late departure. We ended up departing 30 minutes later than expected. First the dinner rolls were cold which they said they had no way of heating them up. The tea was weak the lemonade taste like pure powdered sugar. For dinner I got the chicken dinner and my husband and son got the salmon. The chicken was dry and unseasoned, the Salmon taste like it was frozen and bland. The green beans and mashed potatoes were also unseasoned. For dessert we had the apple pie and ice cream. The apple pie was cold my son said you can’t go wrong with ice cream. The train was unbearably cold it was miserable, several of the guest moved to the front on the train where it was a little warmer. When we got to the end of the train to head back we sat at a stand still for about 30 minutes, I figure due to departing 30 minutes late. I can’t express enough I would definitely not recommend this dinner and train ride. We was told to arrive 30 minutes early, left 30 minutes late and did not arrive back to the station until 11:10pm. I’m sure for $230 and 3 1/2 hours of our time we could have found somewhere else to go and enjoy. This train ride was the worse part of our trip. I wish someone would contact me concerning this matter.

We took a ride on the Dinner Train this weekend and was disappointed because the air conditioning was set to "FREEZING'. We mentioned to one of the employees how cold it was and he said "once the train gets moving it will warm up". Wrong!!! That was a high price to pay for the ticket, to be so cold you could not enjoy the trip. The food was good, but not anything to brag about. Because of the cold temperature on the train the food was cold before you had a chance to eat a fourth of it . Needless to say we will not do a second trip and take a chance of freezing to death!! When it is 90 degrees outside and freezing inside the train, that is a high price to pay to be miserable.... I would not recommend this Dinner Train unless you take a heavy coat or dress warmly, even though it is HOT outside. There were no directions to the Museum nor anything to indicate where to go. We had to ask someone in the parking lot where to go to board the train. Very poor set up!!

We were visiting from Florida and took the 1 hour missionary ridge trip just to have the experience of riding on an old fashioned train fir our teen son who has always loved them. It was a fun little trip, the conductor did a great job of explaining the history as well as making good jokes. Watching the turntable turn the engine was really cool. My son is very interested is someday coming back for the teen camp.
They were also very diligent about social distancing, enforcing mask wearing, and keeping the train clean. I highly recommend this company!

This was a great experience for our family (two kids 10 and 7) on the Missionary Ridge Local. Perfect length on the train for two young kids (15 minutes each way). Our kids loved it and asked when we could go again on the train.
In addition, there is a stop at the East Chattanooga station for a demonstration of a locomotive on a turntable and a short talk in the train repair shop.
Total trip time just over an hour, which is plenty for young kids.
The previous reviewer that was critical should read the description of the train ride that is clearly stated on the website. If this is not what you are looking for, then you probably shouldn’t have bought the tickets.
At any rate, seats on the train are in groups of four and you face each other, so perfect to keep an eye on the kids. Train ride is narrated by the conductor, who gives interesting facts about the train and the Chattanooga history.
Train ride isn’t incredibly scenic but does go over the Chickamagua and through a pre Civil war tunnel. Cost for a family of four (two kids and two adults) is about $80 (including taxes). Train departs north of Chattanooga and not downtown.

We love the relaxing sound of the train rolling along the tracks and are always searching out new train rides. I am sad to say this one hugely disappointed us. We took the half day ride and could'nt wait to get off. First we will start at the beginning. The depot only houses 2 restrooms with all these people crammed into this small building with a small snack shop and gift shop. None of the staff explained where to go to line up, it was basically find it for yourself. Well we got aboard the train and the ride was already running late. The only thing we saw all the down to Georgia was trash all over the roads in the woods everywhere. There was no scenery or anything, just run down houses and trash littered everywhere.
We arrived at Crawfish Springs, noone explained anything about the town or pointed anyone in the right direction. There are no signs in town to tell you where to go, good thing for cellphones. We pull those out and find the mansion. They promised us and hour and half in town we only got 45 minutes, since they were running behind. The little railroad museum was a joke. The table was broken and just laying on the ground. The ride back was the best part when we stopped at the watchtower for a 15 minute presentation by one of the conductors. This was very interesting and exerting climbing up all those stairs.
We will not return to this station, they need to do some serious improvements with signs on the trains and in town to let you know what is going on. Of course, get the train track area cleaned up for viewing. Why would anyone want to see towns like that? It makes the communities look bad.

A group of us decided to take time out & ride the railroad and do the Missionary Ridge Local ride in Chattanooga. We arrived little early by 45 minutes & went to checked out the Depot store & (our ticket also included the train Exhibit across the tracks so we went there too.) The ride to East Chattanooga took about 15 minutes. The seats were comfortable and the conductor gave lots of information about the history of the rail line. We arrived at our destination & disembarked for the demonstration of the engine being turned around. (You don't have to get off the train if you don't want to, but you will really enjoy seeing how they turn the trains around) Then we went to the gift shop to buy snacks & cold sodas. We then re-boarded the train for the return trip. The conductor & staff were super helpful & friendly & paid attention to everyone's needs from getting on & off the train). The cost for our ride was $24 per adult & in total including the disembarking tour, the whole thing lasts a little over an hour round trip.
Kids will LOVE (as much as the Adults) the ride, sound of the train horn, looking out the windows at the scenery & being up close to a real train.

We went to the museum expecting to see exhibits. We were very disappointed. There is one little room with a couple displays but not much else.
We initially wanted to take one of the Christmas season train rides but learned none of them leave from this location and we didn’t have time to get to our next attraction if we had driven that far out of town to get to the other depot.
We booked the Mission Ridge trip which was advertised as a 55 minute ride. It is actually a 15 minute trip to a nearby depot, then a 25 minute demonstration on turning a train engine around, followed by a 15 minute trip back down the exact same track. I was expecting a big hour long circle to see something more. It was not worth the money or the time expended.
The only bright spot were the train staff who are very passionate and knowledge about the trains and history of the Chattanooga railways.

I'm trying to plan my summer trip down there: is there a shuttle or bus going to Delano from Chattanooga or does a person have to use an Uber or taxi to get there for the Hiwasse loop ride?

Does anyone know if they sell tickets to just view the retired trains in the yard?

For Valentine's Day dinner or Dinner in the Diner, do you tip in addition to the advance ticket purchase?
Written January 12, 2020
We always do. The servers are paid like regular restaurants. Your service is much more attentive on the train rides. Therefore, we generously tip to Thank them for such great care. They know us by name now & even remember my wife has some special needs. Of course, if you don’t get good service, either lower the tip or cut it out altogether. I’m sure that TVRR would appreciate knowing if one of their servers isn’t performing up to their standards. We hope you have a wonderful Valentines Day & meal. I’ll bet you go home well satisfied.

Unlike traveling by airplane, most people prefer to ride towards the back of the train where engine noise less during the golden age of railroading. However, because we don’t travel by train as much nowadays, we find people like any seat some prefer to be close to the engine. So it’s more of what you prefer to do.

How are the fall train rides? I see a couple of them Half day & full day. Any suggestions? Worth the cost?

I went on the short ride to the yard because I like trains. That trip was not scenic - at least not that time of the year (July). The attraction is the time at the yard seeing the turntable work and visiting the shop.

There is really no difference between online and walk up tickets. Please remember on popular days you might not be able ride on the next train if we sell out. Discounts are available for AAA, Military, and First Responders for our Missionary Ridge Local Trip and may be applied by purchasing your tickets over the phone or onsite at our Grand Junction Depot ticket office.

I don't think it matters. Ours were purchased online but it's the same price.

Hi, what would you like to know about this attraction? Does this once a year train ride carry one half million people?

However, to answer your question, it is highly unlikely that any single train ride event could carry half a million people. Even the largest train rides or events typically have attendance numbers in the tens of thousands, rather than the hundreds of thousands or millions.
That being said, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum is a popular destination and offers a variety of train rides and events throughout the year, including special holiday-themed rides and excursions on vintage steam locomotives. We recommend checking our website or contacting us directly for more information about specific events and their attendance numbers.
