We decided to check out the railroad and do the Missionary Ridge Local ride on our vacation to Chattanooga. We arrived about 40 minutes early, checked out the Depot store and grabbed some snacks. The staff was friendly and helpful. For our trip, a large school group was also present, but the staff grouped them on a single car (of the 3) so the rest of the guests weren't swarmed by little kids. The ride to East Chattanooga was about 3 miles and took about 15 minutes. The seats were comfortable and the information about the history of the rail line was interesting.

Upon arrival at our destination, we watched a demonstration of the engine being turned around, then went to the shop to see their current projects. We then re-boarded the train for the return trip.

The cost for our ride was $23 per adult (less for our 10 year old) and included museum entry as well. It was well worth it. If you have anyone in your family even remotely interested in trains (or enjoys train rides), you should check this one out.

Finally had time to visit Tennessee Valley Railroad over the weekend. We were more than impressed with this business from start to finish. The process of ordering your tickets online is very easy, just choose your date and time and away you go. There are Covid-19 restrictions in place at this time, you do have to wear your mask at all times on the train and in the depot.
After placing our order online we got our first email from TVRR confirming our purchase. Then we received a welcome email thanking us for purchasing tickets and planning our trip. Then, we received an email detailing other attractions we might like to visit in planning our trip to the area. I have received these sorts of emails from hotels previously but never from an area attraction. Due to the Covid restrictions I was unsure if their gift shop would be open, so I placed an online order for a couple of souvenirs. Turns out one of my items was out of stock. Rather than send me an email they called me!!!!!! When was the last time someone did that for you. Hardly anyone takes the time to do that anymore.
So, we finally get to Chattanooga and the night beforehand, I get an email from them informing me of road construction near them and how to avoid it to save time. All of this and we haven’t even visited them yet. Once we got there the friendliness and hospitality didn’t stop. Every single person there from the ticket clerks to the conductors and everyone in between treated us as if we were visiting them in their home. Everyone there really seems to truly enjoy what they are doing and it shows.
There are several different trips or packages you can choose of varying lengths. We chose the 1 hour 6 mile trip. They also offer dinner trains and the Polar Express at Christmas. I cannot wait to get back to see the depot and trains lit up for Christmas. Tickets are very affordable, and the trains do have air conditioning for these hot summer days we are in right now in July.
I cannot convey in just a few short sentences how extremely impressed we were with TVRR and our trip on the train from start to finish. This was one of the best experiences I have had as a customer with any business in our travels over the last 20 years. If you are anywhere near Chattanooga, or if you just love trains you need to go visit Tennessee Valley Railroad.

The conductors are AWESOME! They check on the passengers all the time to make sure we are comfortable. It was a wonderful five hour trip with lots of history being narrated by a southern voice that was actually pleasant. The scenery of course was beautiful. The conductors were just really sweet and one of them played the banjo for us during the last hour. This is worth doing at least once a year. The price for the time that you spent on the train was really worth it. In the south we like to visit so there was a lot of visiting - people became friends and shared their experiences.

We took a ride on the Dinner Train this weekend and was disappointed because the air conditioning was set to "FREEZING'. We mentioned to one of the employees how cold it was and he said "once the train gets moving it will warm up". Wrong!!! That was a high price to pay for the ticket, to be so cold you could not enjoy the trip. The food was good, but not anything to brag about. Because of the cold temperature on the train the food was cold before you had a chance to eat a fourth of it . Needless to say we will not do a second trip and take a chance of freezing to death!! When it is 90 degrees outside and freezing inside the train, that is a high price to pay to be miserable.... I would not recommend this Dinner Train unless you take a heavy coat or dress warmly, even though it is HOT outside. There were no directions to the Museum nor anything to indicate where to go. We had to ask someone in the parking lot where to go to board the train. Very poor set up!!

No where on the website, tickets, or email did it tell me that people riding the 3:30 train needed to see the museum before their train ride or they would not have a chance to see it after. As a result, I didn’t get to see the museum at all. Very very disappointing, as I drove all the way from Florida to Chattanooga precisely for its transportation history. You should include on the website and on the tickets that arriving 30 minutes before the train departs will not allow you enough time to see the museum. Or, you need to tell people their train tickets are good for three days at the museum. I would have come back to see the museum if you had told me that. I so sorely wanted to see it and I walked away feeling cheated of the full experience.

I went on the North Pole train ride last night with friends. Absolutely delightful! Lots of families took them up on the invitation to "wear your pajamas". I'm 65 and this is only the second time in my life I've been on a train. Lots of beautiful Xmas decorations (we went after dark, which is recommended), activities that keep you busy (hot chocolate and cookies, writing Letters to Santa, etc.) Lots of love and care put into all the details. Get there early and grab a bite to eat at their little cafe/diner and enjoy the gift shop. Definitely worth the trip if you don't live in Chattanooga. People were good about keeping their masks on (except when you eat). We had a man who started singing Xmas songs and lots of people joined in without prompting. Loved it. They might think about making that a planned part of the ride.

We started out a little off schedule but it wasn’t a problem. The trip was a lot of fun and both of our kids really enjoyed it. It was very educational with the tour guide discussing facts about the train station and the area. After we stopped to get the train turned on the turntable I noticed we were getting a bit rushed for a 5pm reservation to a local restaurant called Ooltewah Whistle Stop. I asked the conductor how long it would be and let them know our situation. They went above and beyond to help us. They got the train started back as soon as they could, apologized for the delay and told us they would come get us so we could get off the train first to make it to the reservation. We got to the reservation 2 minutes past the grace period and thankfully they took pity on us and let us come in anyway! We greatly appreciated the TN Valley Railroad Museum going above and beyond like that for us and the trip was so much fun!

A great evening for one or two couples on the dinner train! It’s a two hour ride, complete with dinner. Check in and boarding are quick, and the cars, while vintage, are comfortable. If you’re cold natured, take a light wrap. I was perfectly comfortable but my wife did get a little chilled. There are restrooms on the train if needed. The train runs through some wooded areas and some urban areas of Chattanooga.

The dinner was actually a little better than expected. The beef and chicken entrees were very well done with nice portion sizes. Sides were good, and the desserts were excellent! The staff were all very friendly, and there were a lot f them moving around the car from start to finish. You’re never more than a few sips away from a drink refill.

Allow a little extra time to check out the displays; there’s some interesting items in the depot office. Grab a souvenir in the gift shop before you leave for dinner.

We would do this trip again, especially if going with another couple, as the ride allows for a nice dinner and good conversation in a vintage dining car at a reasonable cost. There’s no alcohol (that I’m aware of) and that’s OK. I didn’t see a tipping policy (we did as did some others). Overall, a very enjoyable way to spend an evening!

This is a must-see if you are in town, regardless of your interest in trains. The museum admittance and train ride are a great value for the money, and you will not be disappointed. If you are into trains, you will never want to leave. they have a big collection of railroad equipment, and you get to see an operating turntable in action. the shop tour is great, everyone is friendly and knowledgeable, and even the food in the snack bar is pretty good!

I thought dinner and a train ride would be a great outing for my family and I. We made reservations for the 8:15 dinner which we was skeptical about taking due to not being able to see the view because Of the late departure. We ended up departing 30 minutes later than expected. First the dinner rolls were cold which they said they had no way of heating them up. The tea was weak the lemonade taste like pure powdered sugar. For dinner I got the chicken dinner and my husband and son got the salmon. The chicken was dry and unseasoned, the Salmon taste like it was frozen and bland. The green beans and mashed potatoes were also unseasoned. For dessert we had the apple pie and ice cream. The apple pie was cold my son said you can’t go wrong with ice cream. The train was unbearably cold it was miserable, several of the guest moved to the front on the train where it was a little warmer. When we got to the end of the train to head back we sat at a stand still for about 30 minutes, I figure due to departing 30 minutes late. I can’t express enough I would definitely not recommend this dinner and train ride. We was told to arrive 30 minutes early, left 30 minutes late and did not arrive back to the station until 11:10pm. I’m sure for $230 and 3 1/2 hours of our time we could have found somewhere else to go and enjoy. This train ride was the worse part of our trip. I wish someone would contact me concerning this matter.
