About
Did you know The designation of DUKW is not a military pun - the name comes from the terminology used for military vehicles in World War II; the D indicates a vehicle designed in 1942, the U meant "utility (amphibious)", the K indicated all-wheel drive and the W indicated two powered rear axles. Although technically a misnomer, DUKWs are often referred to as duck boats. Another popular nickname was old magoo or simply magoo. Though the origin of this term is unknown, it probably refers to the odd shape of the vehicle. DUKWs became known as ''Ducks'' and are still in use, as well as purpose-built amphibious tour buses, primarily as tourist transport in harbor and river cities.

Our guide was super fun and so informative about Chattanooga. We learned SO much history on the downtown area and the city as a whole. The ONLY reason I didn't give it a higher rating was for just 2 people for 1 hour it was kind of pricey. I get it, it's a touristy thing to do, but I would/ve liked a more reasonable price tag.

Stumbled upon the duck when our initial plan to go to the aquarium fell through. We bought tickets minutes before and enjoyed our time aboard. Captain Rob was very informative and made us laugh numerous times. I highly recommend if you’d like to learn a bit about the city while cruising on the river.

Family of 6 took this tour on a Thursday. Tour guide Barry did a phenomenal job of informing, educating and entertaining the entire 75 mins. Duck staff was gracious enough to rebook us after we did exactly what they warned us not to…plan to the wrong time zone. Plenty of parking right across from where you check in…highly recommend this attraction while in Chattanooga.

This was a good family tour for my family of five. It was a nice surprise to go around so many places in the City Our tour guide gave us a list of places that we kept taking notes so we know where to hit next time. Loved that he gave every child a chance to drive the boat, too. My children all paid attention (ages 7, 9, 11)

We took our trip with Captain Rob. The trip was very enjoyable and we learned a lot of history about the city of Chattanooga. You learned a lot of stuff that only people that actually live there would know. Once we got to the water Captim Rob let all of the kids have a turn at driving the boat. I would highly recommend this trip if you want to learn more about the city that you are visiting.

We saw the amphibious "Duck" vehicles running around town and took a chance and I'm glad we did! Captain Rob was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and entertaining as well. From the river, he pointed out many things we will definitely do if we go back. He was also especially good to the children on board, allowing personal photo time for each of them while never missing a beat on the tour. While waiting, be sure to visit the Southern Belle Riverboat for a quick drink, snack or shopping.

The best way to see the sites and the beauty of the river in Chattanooga. Ask for Captain Barry. Local Lore of interesting facts to rumor vs. real, all packed into an exciting animated narrated history. Anyone, yep anyone, is invited by the Captain to pilot the vessel... KIDS LOVED IT. Adult beverages available at the boarding site.... Perfect! The beautiful vistas viewed from the River are a memorable personal postcard of Chattanooga. Don't Miss It... Be There!

River trip including everyone from 6 year old to an 84 year old. Our guide Dave made it a great and enjoyable trip for all. Very humorous, very informative and educational. Included a lot of info of original Cherokee inhabitants. Spent time focusing on children’s experiences which was much appreciated. Would definitely recommend for anyone that wanted a little bit of knowledge and history of Chattanooga along with a short river tour that would interest all ages. Took about an hour or a little more. Only disappointment was that they ran out of moon pies, small I know, but since they originate in Chattanooga, wasn’t expected

Do you get splashed on the attraction? Are you soaked?

No you don't get soaked. Occasionally when the wind is very strong from the west it can blow into the Duck. On those days the Captain will usually enter the water slower to reduce the "splash"

I just checked their website and it looks like they only have tours from March to October. You can give them a call to find out for sure.

It last close to an hour. Most of the visit is on the water with a short shuttle from their 'base' to the launch site. One suggestion . . .make sure you charge your devices to capture everything. Hope you enjoy!

Where does the tour go?

They are located between Market and Broad Street. The tour starts by entering the Brand street taking a right turn toward the Aquarium. Then at the aquarium it turns left and then right at the stop light. Driving toward Rosser Landing which is along the riverside. At the stop light at RL it takes left on to the riverfront Parkway. The last turn is a right turn after passing under the bridge in to the river. Usually they turn right soon after getting into the river go for a mile or so just pass the island and the Hunter Museum. Then turn back the same way they came, except they go past the Aquarium on to the Market Street to get back to their station. There is a catch, this route is their normal way they go but if there are any construction or road blocks they go different ways to get to the river.
