Unless you are a die-hard Civil War enthusiast I feel you can better spend your time at other areas of interest on Lookout Mountain.

The Cravens House is a good spot for hiking along with some historical signs and markers as well. It a bit off the beaten path and was not crowded on a Saturday afternoon. There are tons of trails for hiking, including some trails that take you up to the top of lookout mountain. Great views from the top, but the... More

We started our hike to Sunset Rock from Cravens House and hiked the Craven House Trail to Bluff Trail, then on to Sunset Rock. The hike was 2.8 miles roundtrip, and was mostly uphill on the way to Sunset Rock, but it is not overly strenuous (our 11 y.o. made it with no trouble.) There are steep granite bluffs along... More

Giant bummer that you can't actually go in the house, but a visit to the area is worth the great view and to read the historical placards scattered throughout the area. Make time for this stop on your way to or from Ruby Falls and other attractions in this area.

This is a period home that had burned down and rebuilt on an amazing property with a view of Chattanooga. There are monuments depicting the civil war in the area with lots of nice historical trails. There are rifle pits and ruins and more plaques all over the trail system. The house is typically not open for tours, but you... More

Nice piece of history here. Lots of information on the battles. Not very busy. It was pretty hot out so we didn't do the additional hikes.

Cravens House is not open to the public, but we enjoyed the view and hiked around the area, reading the signs commemorating the Battle Above the Clouds. The area is quiet and historic.

I have been to the Cravens house before but when we visited this time it was not open. I did not see their hours posted. The views from the house are great and you can take a hike on the trails that are near the house.

This house belonged to Dr. Cravens, and it played an important part in the Battle Above the Clouds. It served as the headquarters for Union officers as well as a Union hospital. It's beautifully kept and a lovely example of a period house that displays the architecture of the time.
