Don't miss the opportunity to drive (or stop in places and walk) through a breathtaking part of the west! You won't want to speed through Spearfish Canyon and you'll want the windows down so you can hear and smell "nature": Waterfall, flowing creek, fishing, mountain goats! Spearfish Canyon is a natures wonderland...all seasons.

If you have not taken a scenic byway, by all means do so. They are not as fast as the mega-slab interstates, but you will get closer to the "place." (I traveled during July 2015.)

There is a reason that Spearfish Canyon is a Scenic Byway. Don't miss it. Stop at Cheyenne Crossing when you reach US 85 and enjoy an Indian Taco or a fine Breakfast

It was very hot outside so a cool ride through beautiful country was very relaxing. There was a little construction on one end, but not much a hold up. Well worth the time.

Take the time to take this route between Deadwood and Spearfish. You will be driving on the canyon floor with a "mountain" stream running right next to the road.

This is the easy drive to get up clise to gorgeous scenery. We're not hikers but you can see one fall from the road, great pullout to view and take photos. Another area has great paths and boardwalks to see 2 other falls. Absolutely beautiful and nice cool breeze on a 105 temperature day. We drove about 4 minutes up... More

There is so much beauty packed into this relatively short drive. Be sure and stop and enjoy the beautiful scenery. This a place where you can let the Black Hills soak in. It's a special place. Take this drive. You won't be sorry.

This approximately 20-mile route will take much longer to drive, primarily because you are going to stop numerous times to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The waterfalls are a must see. Pick up the Spearfish tourism booklet at a visitors' center, as it has a map of the byway and you can prepare to stop (not all of the pull-outs are... More

Hiking or in the car this area is a must see. The hills and streams and wildflowers surround you and the smell of the forest is wonderful. We find that when you talk to the locals they are so helpful sending you to great walking paths and places to eat. Just happened to this area after Mt. Rushmore and are... More
