On our last day of Rapid city visit, we stopped by at Dahl Arts Center. We spent around one and half hours at their exhibit. A carefully chosen collection of art works (paintings, sculptures, photographs) by local artists were displayed there. Admission is free (donations accepted). Visitors have to use street parking (25 cents for one hour as of Aug 2018).

We were very surprised by the variety of exhibits, the number of exhibits and found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend visiting the panorama room that depicts the history of the west - extremely well done!

We loved the art work that we saw, but most striking was the amazing mural that went 360 around one of the rooms.
WOW!

Enjoyed this art museum of Rapid City! Several changing galleries show different forms of art from Native work to Expresssionism. The art center offers classes to long term guests or residents. It adds to the art life in Rapid City.

And this museum is free to the public so check it out. One exhibit was under construction during my visit so I will have to catch that later. But the mountain photography exhibit was fantastic. The room of paintings was very provocative as well. Well worth a visit.

The Dahl Arts Center is a great complex in downtown Rapid City for both established artists and emerging artists. There are galleries, the diorama room, event space and the cafe. I was there recently view a friend's photography exhibit in the Cultural Cafe, one area of the complex. After viewing the photography, we went to the main area to find a great collection of work by local artists and a interesting display of traditional art forms including hardanger (Scandinavian needle work), leather work, handmade bows and quilts. One gallery had a short term exhibition of bicycle art. The mural of American history is well done and a very interesting piece of work...good way to start a discussion on American History. There is no entrance fee - donation box near the reception desk. Activity room for children. Personnel were friendly. Great place to stop for an hour or two. And a great place to spend a little time occasionally if you are local.
