- my82pinkSan Diego, California2,530 contributionsDo every overlookWe stayed in Rapid City and went to 1880 Town first then back to Badlands and Wall Drug. I specifically picked this route because I wanted to enter through the Peter Norbeck entrance to begin with the Badlands Overlook and Window and Door trail. Going from east to west. It’s a National park so it was free with our America the Beautiful Pass. $30 per car without. We stopped at every overlook. They all look different. We stayed for 2.5 hours. Some of the overlooks are just views and others will allow a path to walk down further. It was extremely hot and no shade so be sure to hydrate. We took the gravel road to Roberts Prairie Dog Town. It was mid noon on a hot day so it took a while for the prairie dogs to come above ground. You just have to stand around and be patient.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 14, 2023
- WandaSnowLancashire, United Kingdom194 contributionsIt’s got to be doneThis is a must-do if you’re visiting the area or driving through. Lots of reviews to which I won’t add. Suffice to say that you will not be disappointed. Take the loop road and see bison, prairie dogs and bighorn sheep. I would suggest entering from highway 44 from Rapid City mainly because it’s less busy and the scenery just gets better and better as you head to the other end.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 17, 2023
- Sharon KUnited Kingdom28 contributionsBadlands National Park is a hidden Gem and very different to other National Parks,Badlands National Park is very different to other National Parks, It has spectacular views and canyons however the rock formations are very different to those of Bryce, Zion and the Grand Canyon. Badlands buttes, pinnacles and spires are eroding much more quickly than in other National Parks which means the views are ever changing There are rolling grass prairies and we think this National Park is a hidden gem which is well worth a visit. If you get chance stop at the famous Wall Drug establishment which first became famous for offering free iced water to thirsty travelers in the 1930's The place is an eclectic mix of all kinds of goods for sale and also has a good self order cafeteria restaurant in which the food is good and the service quick and you can still get free iced water or a 5c cup of coffee if you want one.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 20, 2023
- Joebob747Neenah, Wisconsin385 contributionsWow, just wowThis is an absolute must go when in South Dakota. It's way bigger and way more impressive than I expected. I thought it would be similar to Painted Desert in AZ, but this was so much better. It's like driving through a city of castles with layer upon layer of color. Every turn in the road, every viewpoint, and every trail has something awesome to see. We took Sage Creek Road out to the prairie dog town. Got stuck in a traffic jam of Bighorn Sheep and Bison. Just amazing. Bring water. It's hot. Stay for sunset. Stars are unbelievable.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 1, 2023
- Kay KChicago, Illinois171 contributionsInteresting visitor center and viewsThis park has interesting geological formations. It does not have a wide variety of hiking trails. Probably worth a half day visit. The “fossil lab” in the visitor center is definitely worth a visit!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 3, 2023
- Donna BSapphire, North Carolina97 contributionsGlad we cameVistas everywhere like nothing we had ever seen before. The eastern part of the loop road is more scenic than the western section. - SnickersDaisyCleveland, Ohio258 contributionsWorthwhileStopped off at the Badlands National Park on our way to Mount Rushmore. It was well worth the time as the views were amazing. From the craggy crevices to the striped hills, the views from the overlooks were incredible. Well worth a few hours to drive through and stop at the overlooksVisited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2023
- ASGLondonLondon, Canada235 contributionsWowI loved my visit to the Badlands National Park. I was greeted by some buffalo wandering along the road near the entrance. The staff member at the entrance was friendly and made some small talk with me. The scenic drive offers some wonderful scenic vistas. There were some hiking trails, but it was raining on the day of my visit and they were impassable. The restrooms were pretty rustic. I only drove one direction along the scenic trail, but I would definitely recommend going around twice so you can see the views from multiple angles. There were some buffalo, prairie dogs, and long-horned sheep wandering around the park as well.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten October 12, 2023
- Luann MPecatonica, Illinois430 contributionsA beautiful drive! We went on a beautiful fall day, and enjoyed it very much. With noon selections at Wall not being exception, we had a great picnic lunch at one of the picnic areas. We went east from Wall, and it was a gorgeous drive. We did not do any hiking this time since we have been here numerous times, but we couldn't head home and not see the Badlands!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 18, 2023
- GoAlong2Seattle, Washington893 contributionsSpectacular colors and formationsThis is a beautiful and fascinating park. Approaching from the north, the flat grasslands give no indication of the colorful layers and formations you see as you arrive at the rim. We spent much of two days exploring various sights in the park and there was still more to see. We drove the road along the rim as well as down through the formations and enjoyed the colorful landscape. We saw plenty of wildlife in the park such as bison, prairie dogs, sheep, and even a rattlesnake. The visitor center was quite busy and offered information on hikes and sights. It’s a beautiful park to visit.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 10, 2023

As a National Park at $30 it seemed a bit pricey for everything that there was to do. The main road in is a major artery for those who live in the area, so you will be passing FedEx and Amazon delivery drivers getting to their destination.
There are two roads in the area and the main one will take you from the interstate down to Interior, SD. On the way you will pass the visitor's center, which for us was not open thanks to the Covid-19 shutdowns which were still occurring in June.
The next day, after camping in a local campground, we returned to the Badlands and chose the route that went towards Wall, SD. There were a few pull offs for hiking or seeing replica fossils from the area. There were also a few locations that were closed for repair. We ended up stopping at the top of the badlands for a panoramic view of the area. We were the only ones there and it was super quiet.
On our way down, we were headed to the Big Foot overlook but soon discovered that overlook also was closed due to construction. This time, we had to stop for roadwork and wait for the lead vehicle to guide us down the valley and up to the other side. We sat for awhile and finally it was our turn to follow.
Because we were wanting to return to the main road, I had GAIA maps app already on my phone and was able to map us a route back to the main attractions without having to go back through the road work. Along the way, it was dirt roads and saw a snake crossing the road, ranch lands, and a pronghorn deer that was super interested in us. Finally, we ended up at the main attraction on the main road and stopped to climb amongst some of the badlands towers.
For $30 it did seem a bit steep for what you did, especially with the visitor's center closed with the knowledge of what is in the area. It seems like during the shutdown, the prices in turn should be half price to visit the park.
Would I recommend the park? Only for a place to say you've been to, and especially IF the visitor's center is open. If the park's center isn't open and you can, save it for another day.

I can't recommend the Badlands enough. Was a great experience. Spent one afternoon and the following morning there. Did the scenic drive that everyone does and the scenery is just breathtaking. The rock formations and how they flow into the prairie is just beautiful with the various colors and textures. Pulling off at any of the overlooks will provide incredible views. On my second day I did a hike recommended by one of the rangers - a combination of the Medicine Root and Castle Trails. It was about 4 miles and was a good mix of prairie and rock formations and was a pleasant walk. In addition to the incredible scenery, the wildlife is also amazing. Saw a dozen bighorn sheep on my second day including several that were right next to my car. Also saw plenty of prairie dogs and bison. Had the incredible experience of seeing a herd of about 100 bison cross the road about 200 yards in front of my car. Must see national park!

It is a beautiful stretch of land. You can visit and appreciate the beauty without ever leaving your car or you can choose one of the hikes. There is a range of ability and length options. We loved seeing the very adorable Prairie Dogs. Badlands Park rate the hikes very honestly. There is a hike that would be rated easy except the few spots where you have to navigate a bit of a drop off and a log ladder. They also mention that it is not advised after a rain due to being very slippery. They are not kidding. The log ladder is easier up than down. But the landscape is so rugged and unique. If you are planning on visiting several of the sites in between Dakotas and/or Wyoming or California, consider getting the annual pass. We finally purchased it at Yellowstone. We would have saved a little money. The single use passes are good for 7 days in all of the national parks. We wished we could have allotted more time. So much beauty to see!

This was absolutely incredible! We got out at the first few places but then went down a side road with a little picnic area and hiked a very lightly use, unmarked trail for about 45 minutes. While in the park, we saw a couple of big horn sheep up close and it was amazing! They say Fossil Trail is a must see, but I was disappointed. It's basically a .25 mile boardwalk with bronze sculptures of the fossils. If you're into reading about fossils or if need something safe for the kids to walk through, go. If not, I'd skip it and find other trails.

We drove from Rapid City on hwy 90 and started from the west from a town named Wall. We stopped at the Ranger entrance and the cost was $30 or you can buy a one year pass for senior citizens for all parks for $20. The loop 240 road trip was wonderful. We stopped on all view sites. We enjoyed going there.

It's the number one tourist spot to visit in SD for a reason - it's awesome. If you love the outdoors, beautiful scenery, selfies, photo shoots, and wild animals then don't miss a day spent here. We loved all the different mountain rock formations and colors. When we were driving out many people were still coming in to see the area during the low sun and sunset.

I am giving away a secret. The drive to Sheep Mountain overlook is worth the drive. If you have 4 wheel drive with high clearance the back road is well worth the effort. The Loop road in and of itself is worth your time. BUT if you can go for a short hike there are some great short hikes with exceptional views.

The park is most crowded from 11am- 4pm as per the ranger. So, try to come other times instead.
Bring lots of water & a picnic lunch. There’s only one restaurant in the park & it’s not good.
Drive the loop drive very slowly looking for wildlife. If you drive too fast, you will miss them.
Wear closed toe shoes & preferably hiking boots as it’s a lot of gravel paths which is slippery.
The best bathrooms are at the visitor center which is a flush toilet. Everything else is latrines & some smell bad!
Stay at least one night in the park as you will get different lighting on the rocks at different times of the day.
There is cell phone coverage in the park depending on where you are but don’t count on it. We saw a lot of “searching for service” so just turned it off until we got back to the lodge.
Shop for souvenirs at the lodge store- more variety & better prices than the park store.
Many of the pullouts had signs warning about rattlesnakes although we didn’t see any.
It was very hot in early June so lots of sunscreen needed.
There is not a lot of shade, so the park is very hot. Plan for the heat.
Try to come on a cloudy day for better photographs & cooler weather.
Plan to drive in one entrance & out the other if you are only here for a day.

This is an unforgettable national park. It is certainly very contrasting with many of the national parks on the West Coast such as Sequoia, Yosemite and Lassen Volcanic. It is also very contrasting with Yellowstone National Park. There is very little in the way of trees or vegetation although there are parts of the park which are covered with grass. The really memorable parts are the stark columns of rock and other formations which stretch into the distance. There are numerous overviews where ou can stop to take in the spectacular scenery and take some great photographs.
The Loop Road is definitely worth taking. and at the end, the visitors’ center is worth a look.
We reside more than 1000 miles from this particular national park. Therefore this is probably a once off experience for us. But we were mark this down as unforgettable.

I honestly didn't have high expectations about going to this NP ~ But I was proven wrong! I think after going to almost 20 National Parks that this one is definitely in the top 5!
During the winter and early spring only the top loop is open for you to drive and you can hike from these points. The whole park doesn't open until the summer months. As you enter you will have to pay entrance fees. Going in a lot of the land looks like prairie but just around the corner the show begins with gorges, valleys, mountains and the Black Forest hills. The peaks are so colorful to stripes, stripes, stripes of color from the millions of years of sediment, and erosion.

Can we rent a car or Uber to drive us through the Badlands Trail as we are in an RV?
Written August 28, 2021
I suspect Uber would be very expensive to rent for an hours long tour. I would suggest renting a car at the Rapid City Airport. Reserving a car as far in advance as possible is advised.

I'm confused about the scenic driving trail. I'm staying in Wall and coming from Mount Rushmore, so I was hoping that I could go east along the route and exit at Wall instead of entering at Wall and having to circle back. None of the instructions I'm reading online are clear about this. Does anyone know if that's possible?
Written January 19, 2021
you can follow 44 from the Mt Rushmore area and drive down to get into the badlands or go towards Rapid City and get on 90 to 240

I have seen bison in badlands twice...both times near Roberts Prairie dog town...they are definitely there!!!
Written August 9, 2018
We were there twice in 2 days, and only spotted one. When we went north into North Dakota, and went to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, we saw three herds of bison in the South Unit,, right by the road through the park. along with some groups of 2 or 3 back further away from the road, we really got a great, up close look! At the North Unit, we didn't see herds, but we did see groups of 2, in three different locations. TR national Park seems to be the place to see the bison.
