Not your typical museum structure, this one is built into the side of hill, and much of it is underground. A contemporary version of a traditional Native American dwelling, this beautiful building features Native American (mostly the Sioux tribes) and pioneer exhibits, with many rare artifacts tracing the history of South Dakota.

The center impressed at first sight, as it's literally buried in a hillside. But the exhibits indoors were even better. The center has a good collection of Indian and other artifacts from South Dakota's history, which are arranged chronologically. I was very impressed with how well they were displayed and explained, whether through signs or short videos. The center also... More

This museum us tucked away on a hillside less then a mile from the capital. I enjoyed the exhibits with a real Native American tent and log cabin from the pioneer days. Then upstairs is a great room about the ice age and how it formed the states unique landscape we see today. It is a must stop if your... More

The center tracks the development of the state from Native Americans moving into the region up to recent times in well curated exhibits and interactive displays. The visitor guide clearly shows where hands on, audio, and video exhibits are located. They are about to rotate the Baseball gallery to a different topic, but the other exhibits will remain the same,... More

Wonderful museum that talks about South Dakota History. Great displays. If you have limited time, skip the Capitol tour and visit this one instead.

This turned out to be a very special place for us as we enjoyed the museum part and then conducted research in the archives section. The museum is easy access and great for all ages. We took our time walking around and it was about 2-3 hours to really enjoy it. They had displays and artifacts from the early days... More

When we entered the Center, we were greeted by friendly staff. We didn't have enough time to do the exhibits justice. The displays were well organized with good background information displayed. There were artifacts, photographs, paintings, and video clips. The buffalo and Native American headdress were so impressive. It isn't simply about the Old West, however. Wars, government, the highway... More

Worth going just to see the unique building from the outside. Great museum and history inside. Also houses the State Historical Assoc. records - a real treasure for researchers and genealogists.
