we walk through the trail from Spearfish Canyon lodge to the Roughlock falls, you can see some flowers in summer time, and there is a bridge on a pond, the scenery is quite beautiful, I saw some a couple come here for taking wedding photos. There are several information board along the trail, so you can know more about the area. When near the falls, there are wooden boardwalk, and there are 2 observation points (upper and lower) for you to see the falls, it's a nice walk in good weather, but if you don't walk, you can drive the dirt road to the falls directly,

A beautiful stop to take in the beauty of a small fall and watch rainbow trout frolic in the cold stream. Walk along the trails and boardwalk, take in the flora, listen to the babbling stream, and take a deep breath full of life.

Near the Spearfish Lodge, there are two falls - Roughlock and Spearfish. Behind the lodge, you can park and hike 1 mile to Roughlock Falls. Or, you can drive approx 1 mile down the gravel road and park. Paved walkways lead from the parking area to several viewpoints and varying heights. Across from the lodge, there is a restaurant with a parking lot and upper view of Spearfish Falls. The large info board shows how to walk .75 miles to the lower viewpoint. Walking the trail is the ONLY way to get to the lower viewpoint, so walk that and drive to Roughlock! Not to mention, we saw an adorable doe and her two fawns along the trail to Spearfish Falls.

Beautiful drive through Spearfish Canyon, a beautiful canyon with Roughlock Falls, a smaller upper fall and a larger lower falls at different viewing spots. Wild flowers and interesting foliage abound. Fascinating history regarding the name of "Roughlock", early history of mining and locks in the area. There are paved paths to follow to each of the viewing sites. Restroom facility available.

Gorgeous views and we really enjoyed seeing the falls frozen since we were able to do by while riding snow mobiles. Definitely a must see if you are in the area!

A very short walk but the beauty and joy on the other end is well worth the steps it takes to get there.

By far one of our favorite places to take our friends and family when they come to visit. You can do the botanical hike for one mile from the Spearfish Canyon Lodge or you can drive a short distance and walk down to the falls. There are several viewing platforms to stop and take pictures.

Stopped with our family after not being here for several years. The improvements made are very good. the views of the falls were very easy to get to. Parking is still tight but its worth the visit.

This is a free stroll on a fairly easy one mile trail along a river with pretty little waterfalls along the way in a wooded nature area. The water was cool and that was felt by us at certain stopping points along the way. Worth the stop!

I read that Forest Road 222 is gravel. Is it very rough from Roughlock Falls to the Dances with Wolves winter film site?
Thank you for any information.
Written September 19, 2020
No, it's not that rough. It's a well maintained gravel road.

The hike is 2 miles about 1 mile each way. Gradual incline on the way to the falls and gradual decline back. Scenic hike.

I was wondering if this place is wheel chair friendly. Thank you
Written June 26, 2019
Yes, I believe that it is. It is possible to drive to the top of the falls instead of hiking the trail although I'm not sure about getting the wheelchair from the parking lot to the falls as we did not go that route. Also, the trail itself is paved and wide, so it is worth going just for the river views. To the best of my memory, there are stairs getting from the bottom of the falls to the top but the views along the way are spectacular.
