    Amazing experience
Great experience! Fun, but professional staff. Everyone from Christina and Gabby at the ticket booth, to our guide Patrick were amazing and caring. The horses were great and the facility was well kept. Highly recommend. Thanks everyone for a wonderful time.
Thank you for taking the time to write this. Hope to see you back at the Stables some time!

Best thing we did on this trip!
Everything about this was amazing! We chose to do the half hour horseback ride and everyone involved in that was fantastic. We had a little horse lesson before we left and it was clear these people love their horses and take wonderful care of them. Our trail leader Mirae (something French) was so great, so funny and kind we loved her. When we arrived at the chuck wagon site the entertainment was hilarious and the food was actually incredible. I don’t think I stopped smiling the entire time. Would one million out of 10 recommend!
So nice to hear this. Meray is a phenomenal guide who's been with us for many years! Will definitely pass this along to her. Our camp cooks have been with us just as long and their food is nothing shy of fabulous. How lucky are we to have a talented crew AND happy, fun-loving customers. Come back and see us sometime!

This is an honest to heaven chuckwagon! There’s nothing like this anywhere! Do not miss it!
Many chuckwagons are partially the experience. This is the whole deal! Real horses, REAL cowboy’s driving, REAL cast iron food made by an honest chuckwagon cook. These are true honest western American’s serving people from around the world with all the truth of the American west and the nostalgia of a time long past. I cannot say enough about this! Don’t come here expecting a cheesy display of the west. These are real people, with real honest hardworking lives, who live to show the joy of the world they are blessed to live in. 5 stars! So very thankful!
Thank you SO much for this review! We are grateful for the opportunity to share our culture with people like yourself. I will pass this review along to our chuck wagon crew. They'll love it.

    Beautiful area and fun!
We did the 1 hr horseback ride to the chuckwagon dinner. The trail takes you around some beautiful South Dakota landscape! The horses were well trained and sweet, and the trail guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. We loved the dinner, delicious steak (hot dogs for kids), potatoes, beans, and cobbler. So much fun!
I'm glad you had a good time!

    Fantastic Experience!!!
We took the 1 hour horseback ride into the Black Hills National Forest and ended with the Chuckwagon Dinner! I cannot say enough good things about both activities! The horseback ride was amazing and the food was phenomenal! The entertainment during the chuckwagon dinner was top-notch! This is the second time I've attended the chuckwagon dinner and will absolutely go again the next time I'm in the area!!!

    Fun evening
Great experience!!! First of all the horses are well taken care of. They are rotated, fed well and they are truly well taken care of. The tour guides gave good explanations on how to ride a horse and how to steer, sit … the tour was small groups which is really nice. The chuckwagon staff were funny, the music was good and the food was awesome! I don’t like beans but these beans were amazing! Only downer was the torrential downpour- but there’s nothing you can do about the weather! Fun time was had by all!!!

    Great fun for all!
We took our 4 year old granddaughter on the chuck wagon dinner show. She loved it. Riding in the wagon pulled by beautiful horses was the highlight. We all enjoyed the meal and the show was entertaining. I recommend it for something different. You can ride horses to the site instead of the wagons. It was a gorgeous view as well. We even saw some deer.

    Great ride through beautiful scenery
Very easy to book online. Beautiful easy trail with a few gentle hills made for a pleasant but not boring ride. Our tour guide Patrick was fun and patient with our larger group (8 people with kids included). The horses were gentle and overall well behaved though RJ kept wanting to stop and scratch on trees. The only slight disappointment is they won’t do group photos. They have a photographer on the trail that takes nice photos as you ride by that you can later purchase and you’re allowed to take your phone or camera to take your own photos. We had a great time and would definitely go again if back in the area.

    Fun for everyone!
Though the weather was cold, the delicious chuck wagon dinner was quick to warm us up! The apple cobbler was a hit for our family and the hour trail ride was perfect for the kids! We also enjoyed the music and a few good laughs were had by all! Perfect afternoon!

The horseback riding was great and we loved it but the dinner and show was a huge waste of money. My steak was small and tough and tasted so bad I couldn’t eat it. The beans were ok and the potatoes were no good either. I was super thirsty because it was hot and we just got done riding horse for an hour and you could get a drink or eat until the show was over. The show was horrible. Some old guy who doesn’t sing or play guitar well. My kids and husband were miserable. So I couldn’t eat the food because it was gross and the lemonade was watered down. I was excited for desert. I was like well I can eat something. The apple cobbler was gross too. The apples tasted like pie filling that was sweetened with artificial sweetener. None of use could eat it. Then you have to sit around and wait until everyone is done because you take a ride in a wagon pulled by a tractor back. My kids were so bored. I would never waste my money on that again. But like I said we loved the horse trail rides.

My daughters and I did the Custer trail lead by MeiRae (sorry, I can’t remember how you spell her name). It exceeded our expectations. It was the highlight of our entire trip. MeiRae was so kind, informative, patient, and made us feel safe and comfortable. She is an all-star employee! I hope the owners know and appreciate this. Any business owner would love to have an employee like this. The horses were calm, well-trained, and healthy looking. The Custer trail is absolutely beautiful, and definitely a bit challenging! We will definitely come back when we visit again!

We did the 1 hour trail ride to the Cowboy Covered Wagon dinner. The horses are calm and our guide an experienced horsewoman & knowledgeable about the area (National Forest/Monument). Dinner was delicious! Steak cooked to order and they’ll teach you about care of cast iron, give you the recipes and explain about how cowboy coffee is made. It’s delicious btw. I only had a few sips unfortunately. (I’m unable to drink caffeine at that hour if I ever want to sleep) The entertainment appropriate for a cowboy experience by real horseback riding (not 4 wheelers) cowboys/ranchers. The ride back in a horse (team) drawn covered wagon had me feeling like I was in the show 1883.
I absolutely recommend this version and would suggest if you’re riding horseback, to bring liquid refreshment of your choosing for the dinner, to the stables. They’ll put it in a tote and it will be waiting for you when you get to the Chuck Wagon. Bring a fly swatter or spinner too. After all you’re outside in the the beautiful countryside!

We went to this Chuckwagon because the reviews were so good, to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The show was good and Larry our driver was a lot of fun but the amount of money you pay, I would have thought the food would have been better. This was my second Chuckwagon in the Black Hills, the experience of riding on the wagon to the meal was cool but I would not believe that the food we ate was worth $75 for the adults and $50 for kids. It is unfortunate because we thought this would be the perfect way to end our trip to the Black Hills but we walked away quite disappointed:(

Let me start with the good....the KOA was beautiful and well maintained. The horses looked to be in great health and the stables were clean and tidy. The staff seemed to enjoy their work and were great with the visitors. Unfortunately, I get sour when I pay for something and don't get what I paid for. This was a b-day gift for my fiance. We signed up for the 1 1/2 hr ride and got just a few mins over an hour. The groups were small (also good) and each group that went out at 10:30 that morning went in a different direction. Our trail was through the woods and quite boring. Nothing to look at but trees (so much of the forest has been unfortunately devastated by bugs...very sad) and the occasional rock formation in the distance. There were no stops along the way at scenic overlooks or anything interesting for that matter. Our guide was nice enough, but she didn't tell or know enough about the area or the land or it's history. This ride was not cheap, actually it was the most I have ever paid for a trail ride anywhere we've ever been, and I feel we got cheated. We came back, went to lunch at the restaurant on the grounds across from the stables, and while we were waiting for our food to arrive, the other groups started coming back. So they all got the full 1 1/2 hr ride. I don't know where they went, maybe their scenery was spectacular. But based on my experience I would say keep looking. There have got to be better places to ride with better scenery than here.

This was our first horseback trail riding experience and it was wonderful. The orientation was very informative and our trail guide was very knowledgable and friendly. Our boys (14, 11, 8) had a blast and said they would definitely do a ride again. We stayed at the Palmer Gulch Lodge so our 3 minute walking commute was perfect for 8:00 in the morning. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a first time trail ride!

We booked this as our last meal at the (KOA Resort). It was a perfect way to end a great week of seeing the sights in the Black Hills. They start with a horse drawn wagon ride through the woods and end at a secluded area. There your food is being prepared over a fire in Dutch ovens. While dinner is cooking cowboys (authentic) sing cowboy songs. The food is made to order and was fantastic! The whole experience was a joy and great to find out all the employees are life long cowboys giving it that authentic feel.

Our guide was incredible.my son had never ridden a horse before and she made him feel comfortable and he was even laughing by the end of the ride. Amazing scenery and delicious dinner to end it all. A must do if you're in the area.

Excellent! Guides are friendly and helpful. The horses appear to be well cared for. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous, the length of the ride was perfect, long enough to get the feeling of being out and exploring the Black Hills but not so long to lose the feeling in your rear end. Book your ride in advance, they fill up! The only downside is the stables are located in an extremely busy and large KOA campground.

Great for first time horseback riders! Our tour guide was Courtney, she was great and made everyone feel comfortable. She even got off her horse to help situate our 10 year old as she continued to give him encouraging words throughout the trip. The facility was welcoming and informative.
