About
Experience award-winning wines in a fun and relaxed setting in the heart of the Black Hills. We’re Hill City’s only working winery and Sandi Vojta, our fifth generation winemaker, handcrafts each wine, often using old family recipes, just a few steps from our Tasting Room. To provide our guests with the best possible wine tasting experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are now requiring reservations for all free wine tastings. Visit https://prairieberry.com/visit/wine-tasting-reservations/ to learn more or to make your reservation. We will do our best to accommodate walk-in guests who wish to do a free wine tasting, but we cannot guarantee availability. Our Kitchen offers housemade menu items including gluten-free, vegetarian and kids’ options. These seasonal menu selections pair perfectly with our wines and use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Enjoy a meal on our patio with our beautiful views of Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak). Our brewery, Miner Brewing Co

You gotta stop in here

Wow--I was impressed! They offer a free wine tasting of 5 wines of your choosing and everyone liked everything they tried. There was a good mix of dry vs sweet wines to choose from. My only reservation about my experience was bottles of wine are pricey. I am normally a beer drinker more than wine and there is a great brewery right next door, but I truly enjoyed the wines.

Greeted at the door and offered to sample several wines. Had a tasty lunch in a quiet location. Went home with several bottles of wine. Excited to taste the pumpkin big again.

Rude Staff
Aug 2021
I was extremely disappointed in my experience with Prairie Berry Winery. We arrived at this beautiful location and noticed a sign out front stating reservations were needed for a tasting. We decided to walk in and ask how to proceed. Prairie Berry has a hostess greeting you as you walk in. We asked if they would take a walk in or if we needed to make a reservation and return later. The hostess looked at her book and talked to another lady and they said "yes" they could accommodate us at Bar "1". We were pointed toward the bar to our left and told to wait there for the person who would be doing our tasting. My husband asked if there was a charge for the tasting or any other details we needed to know and the hostess said the tasting was free and there was nothing else we needed to know. We walked to the bar only to be told by a gentleman who was cleaning the bar that we needed to move to the far left end of the bar for "#1" spot. He was rude. All areas of the 3 long bars we could see are apparently numbered but those numbers were all covered up by decoration so an unknowing first time visitor would not know. As we waited a few minutes we looked around in this large tasting room. As stated they had 3 large visible bars that we could see. They had a large visible inventory of various wines and maybe other foods or collectables that we never looked at. At this time only "2" other tastings were going on and I counted 10 employees in this room. We were then approached by a lady who told us it was going to be about 15 minutes before our tasting started and we could look around if we wanted to. We asked if the person giving us our tasting would contact us when they were ready to begin or how were we to know when to return? The lady hatefully stated "I'm doing your tasting and just come back in about 15 minutes" We asked if it was possible to go ahead with the tasting as they were not busy. The lady then got irritated at us for asking. She shoved the tasting papers at us and said " I guess I can go ahead but will have to check to see if its ok" "You need to pick your 4 wines to taste" Her tone and body language was unwelcoming. We attempted to ask about picking the 4 wines for tasting and she walked off. At this point we were unhappy and frustrated with our experience at Prairie Berry Wines and chose to leave without tasting there wine. The over all first impression is a beautiful setting with lovely landscaping. Walking inside was a HUGE DISAPPOINTEMENT!!!! The staff we encountered were RUDE and UNINVITING!!! The Black Hills area of South Dakota has to many winery choices to stay and be treated poorly. We chose to leave and visit another winery where our business was appreciated.

Great "extra" on our Black Hills visit
Jul 2021
Carol, our tasting expert, was so friendly and knowledgeable. She went over and above the standard. She shared tidbits of knowledge about wine tasting and allowed extra tastes for experimentation of the facts that she shared.

The wines were all very good and we purchased quite a bit. :)

We also ate lunch at the winery, which was excellent.

Fun background on the wines

Beautiful complex and friendly staff! We started with free tasting. Great variety so everyone can find something they like. It was awesome to hear the back-story on all the varieties from our bartender Sue (she was great... fun and very knowledgeable). We also had the Chef's Plate and a couple glasses of wine. I was unfamiliar with many of the selections on the board, but we enjoyed them all .... cleaned the "slate plate"!

Tasting only by reservations....
Jun 2021 • Family
Had been told by others this was a must stop for us. So we ventured over after sight seeing on a Thursday - the wait time for a reservation was over 2 hours. The other choice offered to us was to buy a wine flight. No worries, we would just go that route. However, we had to wait for probably 20 mins in line to purchase (and the line grew quickly behind us). The lone server at that station was working her butt off and still friendly. For basically 6 tastings we paid $18 ($9 a flight of 3). Wines were served Luke warm instead of chilled - probably because of how quickly she was going thru them. Not sure how this was any “safer” for us as patrons to stand in line with others and that server was definitely coming into contact with a ton of folks. Seemed more like a grab to get people to pay instead of doing the free one. We didn’t end up purchasing anything because based on the samples we couldn’t really tell what we would have liked - them being chilled would have helped a ton!
Now the food coming out did look amazing and the storefront was cute.

We stop here every time we pass through. Some good and interesting wines. Negative this time, they weren’t serving food the day we visited (No food service Monday thru Thursday). Positive, our server for the tasting this time (Michael) was outstanding. Enjoyed the tasting and conversation.

Great experience wine tasting with friends last weekend. TJ was fantastic and tons of fun. Had a great lunch with some of the best food we've ever had! The open faced salmon sandwich was dynamite! All of the wines we tried were delicious and each one has it's own traits. Highly recommend!

No wine tasting without a reservation. Rude staff, quick tastes of wine and they walk away. Had to purchase the rhubarb bad ass wine to get a sufficient taste. Did not care for it. Will not return. Tourist trap on way to downtown Hill City

Thank you for visiting Prairie Berry Winery and providing your feedback with us. Due to the concern of safety for our guests and staff, we implemented our free wine tastings by reservation, in an effort to maintain social distancing in our tasting room.
