About
Experience award-winning wines in a fun and relaxed setting in the heart of the Black Hills. We’re Hill City’s only working winery and Sandi Vojta, our fifth generation winemaker, handcrafts each wine, often using old family recipes, just a few steps from our Tasting Room. To provide our guests with the best possible wine tasting experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are now requiring reservations for all free wine tastings. Visit https://prairieberry.com/visit/wine-tasting-reservations/ to learn more or to make your reservation. We will do our best to accommodate walk-in guests who wish to do a free wine tasting, but we cannot guarantee availability. Our Kitchen offers housemade menu items including gluten-free, vegetarian and kids’ options. These seasonal menu selections pair perfectly with our wines and use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Enjoy a meal on our patio with our beautiful views of Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak).

Had been told by others this was a must stop for us. So we ventured over after sight seeing on a Thursday - the wait time for a reservation was over 2 hours. The other choice offered to us was to buy a wine flight. No worries, we would just go that route. However, we had to wait for probably 20 mins in line to purchase (and the line grew quickly behind us). The lone server at that station was working her butt off and still friendly. For basically 6 tastings we paid $18 ($9 a flight of 3). Wines were served Luke warm instead of chilled - probably because of how quickly she was going thru them. Not sure how this was any “safer” for us as patrons to stand in line with others and that server was definitely coming into contact with a ton of folks. Seemed more like a grab to get people to pay instead of doing the free one. We didn’t end up purchasing anything because based on the samples we couldn’t really tell what we would have liked - them being chilled would have helped a ton!
Now the food coming out did look amazing and the storefront was cute.

We stop here every time we pass through. Some good and interesting wines. Negative this time, they weren’t serving food the day we visited (No food service Monday thru Thursday). Positive, our server for the tasting this time (Michael) was outstanding. Enjoyed the tasting and conversation.

The wine was good. The staff was rather unfriendly. Both the hostess and the person who did my tasting were not very friendly. I didn't schedule a tasting in advance. Once I told the hostess this, her demeanor instantly changed. She was more huffy and short with me when I asked questions than she was with the couple before. We ordered lasagna for dinner. While the serving was huge, the pasta was overcooked and it was dry. We listened to a good musician on the patio and this was the highlight of the visit.

Wow--I was impressed! They offer a free wine tasting of 5 wines of your choosing and everyone liked everything they tried. There was a good mix of dry vs sweet wines to choose from. My only reservation about my experience was bottles of wine are pricey. I am normally a beer drinker more than wine and there is a great brewery right next door, but I truly enjoyed the wines.

Stopped here while in the area. You need to make reservations for the wine tasting, but can do it when you arrive or online. We only had to wait about 10 mins. They offered both sweet berry and dry grape wines. You can also buy wine by the glass, get a flight of wine, and order food there. They have a small inside eating area and an outside patio with tables. They also sell gourmet cheese and crackers. Hubby and I each bought a bottle to enjoy in our hotel room that night.

This place is known for their fruit based wines. However, they do produce a line of better quality grape wines called Anna Pesa Wines. These wines are actually pretty good. It’s worth a stop to try these out, we even bought a bottle of their Mourvèdre red wine to take home with us.

Great experience wine tasting with friends last weekend. TJ was fantastic and tons of fun. Had a great lunch with some of the best food we've ever had! The open faced salmon sandwich was dynamite! All of the wines we tried were delicious and each one has it's own traits. Highly recommend!

No wine tasting without a reservation. Rude staff, quick tastes of wine and they walk away. Had to purchase the rhubarb bad ass wine to get a sufficient taste. Did not care for it. Will not return. Tourist trap on way to downtown Hill City

Thank you for visiting Prairie Berry Winery and providing your feedback with us. Due to the concern of safety for our guests and staff, we implemented our free wine tastings by reservation, in an effort to maintain social distancing in our tasting room. We are so sorry to hear that you had a less than expected experience. If there's anything about your visit you'd care to elaborate on, please reach out to sonjab@priaireberry.com.

Prairie Berry never disappoints. We stopped for lunch. My cousin & I each had the lunch special which is soup & a sandwich or salad. My husband had a Ruben sandwich. All excellent. We have eaten here many times & never had a bad meal.
We then did the wine tasting. Chris was excellent. She gave good descriptions & if she didn’t know something she said so. I let her pick my last selection of the 5 allowed & we walked out with 2 bottles. They had done away with the reservation for wine tasting, thankfully.

Beautiful complex and friendly staff! We started with free tasting. Great variety so everyone can find something they like. It was awesome to hear the back-story on all the varieties from our bartender Sue (she was great... fun and very knowledgeable). We also had the Chef's Plate and a couple glasses of wine. I was unfamiliar with many of the selections on the board, but we enjoyed them all .... cleaned the "slate plate"!
