I consider this a must-do if visiting the Hills! Even if you ride or walk a small segment, see parts of the Hills that few see who stay on the highways.

My wife and I did 20 miles north of Hill City, heading south where it was mostly slightly downhill. Most of the way was in the valley right next to the river, with fantastic views of the hills on both sides of us. When we...More

This is a gorgeous trail, the key is to pick a section of the trail that matches your level of fitness and goals. My mom hadn't been on a bike in 30 years and did great on the stint from Rachford to Mystic, it was...More

I loved this 109 mile trail. Some spots were next to the highway but not enough to ruin the trip. I used my trike and gates were easy to get through, I went both ways and going up the hills was slow but doable. Saw...More

The Mickelson Trail is one of the must-have experiences on the Black Hills, I have run the half-marathon on this trail in the summer and snowmobiled on it in the winter. Beautiful yearound!

As Rail-Trail supporters, we were excited to learn that the Mickelson Trail passes about 110 miles through the Black Hills where we were planning our vacation. We purchased a trail pass in advance by mail ($4/ day or $15 annual), and reserved hotels one night...More

This is a great trail for hiking or biking. We biked about 10 miles of it to visit Crazy Horse. It's hard-packed (mostly) gravel, so no road bikes need apply especially at the end of a rainy summer like this one was. Use extra caution...More

I agree. I think you need either a mountain bike or a hybrid, but not a road bike. There are plenty of good rental places if you only have a road bike.

Starting in Deadwood and going to Hill City. That is by far the most scenic but also the most hilly! Keep in mind there is not much cell service from around Rockford.
