A WONDERFUL SURPRISE

I was told by the gal working at the uptown museum that the Ingalls Homestead wasn't something someone "my age" would enjoy...it was more for kids! How wrong she was! We went... read more

This wasn't on my itinerary, but I saw the sign on the interstate on my way to Rapid City, and since I loved the original books and was in the mood for an unplanned adventure, I took the 50-mile detour. It was worth it; I enjoyed the scenery and the experience of being on the actual land where Laura Ingalls... More

I was told by the gal working at the uptown museum that the Ingalls Homestead wasn't something someone "my age" would enjoy...it was more for kids! How wrong she was! We went over there that evening AND again the next day. It was soooo much fun. I even rented a covered wagon to bring my granddaughters back next summer!!! Was... More

Having grown up reading the Little House on the Prairie Books and watching the TV show it was a treat to be able to visit the Ingalls Homestead here in little DeSmet, South Dakota. The covered wagon ride to the old school house was fun and the visits to the buildings in town were great - we even drove to... More

If you are a fan of the Little House books as I have been since I was nine, then you need to see this place. Even my husband enjoyed this and found the farming aspect of it interesting but he was born and raised on a dairy farm.

My family has visited here every summer since we have known about it! I remember visiting DeSmet when I was a child and loving the town tours and pageant, but the whole experience has been completely upgraded since then! The homesite is incredible....my kids wanted to spend an entire weekend there alone! So much to see and do. And definitely... More

The Ingalls Homestead provides a hands on experience of life on the prairie when the area was first settled by white Americans. Here is the Homestead made famous by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Kids (and kids at heart) can lead the two horse team to go to the old school house for some quick lessons and then ride the covered wagon... More

We stayed overnight in the covered wagon, after getting there late and in a whole lot of wind. We brought our bedding and towels as instructed. We were going to have a fire in our own personal fire pit, and cook out-but the wind was far too strong. We got subway which was a minute or two away, and I... More

My 10-year old daughter loved the Little House books and wanted to visit, my 11-year old son wasn't extremely excited to go - needless to say we all had a blast! The family owners and volunteers make this experience great. All exhibits encourage you to explore and touch. You leave with a really good understanding of the different living conditions... More

Excellent. Fulfilling. Bucket list. Living history. Incredibly effective education. I don't have enough words to describe all the angles that the Ingalls Homestead meets. My husband, 6 year old son, and I stayed 2 nights in the covered wagon ($50/night which is a steal) and for me, it was a dream come true. I grew up with Laura and to... More

My daughter is into the book series right now so we decided to stop here on the way to the black hills. We reserved a campsite for our pop up camper and ended up in site #1. There are bathrooms close by and showers are short walk. The campsites are very close together and I feel more for convenience than... More
